I updated both my USB drive/live CD and hard drive installations to Puppy 1.0.4. Puppy 1.04 works well. Abiword now prints out properly. Gnumeric is great. I have a data analyis sheet that I can transfer and use Puppy with. Puppy for me is at the point that I can use it as normal every day Linux system. I am now using Puppy 1.04 hard disk install to do this.

I did have one strange thing that happen when I first updated my hard drive installation. I use LILO to boot one of the three operating system on my hard drive. After the Puppy 1.04 update, I boot to Puppy and got this error message: LILO error Loading PuppyEBDA is big kernel setup stack overlays LILO second stage. The system then stopped. Using my other Linux, point LILO to 1.03 kernel and then booting, I got Puppy to work with lots of error messages. I did a fresh install to thehard disk using the live CD and USB drive. Made LILO to use new Puppy 1.04 kernel and everything worked fine as has been doing so. I do not know why this occurred, but I thought I would post it.

I got this a few times with another distro install. I forgot to run /sbin/lilo after doing the new installation. If the new vmlinuz is different in size for some reason, lilo needs to be invoked again, pointing to the new vmlinuz file. Of course, the partition needs to be mounted, so lilo found it.

Once /sbin/lilo was invoked, found the new vmlinuz file and successfully ran, all was fine on the next boot.

not to disrespect, but what is different in 1.0.4 than 1.0.3
other than a couple packages, I redownloaded 1.0.3
and will stick with it but someone clarifty the difference for me and
anybody else thinking the same thing

Puppy 1.0.4 is one step closer to 1.0.5 and to get to 1.0.5 we need to test out the changes that Barry has made, a lot of which are not obvious as they are under the skin.

By testing and reporting on the forum we can improve Puppy and try to include the things that people are requesting.

Among other things, the kernel has been upgraded. It also appears that printing from AbiWord may have been fixed. If that is true, and if my SmartLink modem will work with the new package, then I will be upgrading and likely ditching Xandros as it seems mighty slow on this, a brand new computer. I must be spoiled by Puppy.

And also (if possible) I feel going over to GRUB which is our preferred bootloader is worth considering (instead of LILO)

Some distros (practically all of them) change the externals to impress and wow the superficialists. It is a cheap trick MS uses to generate undeserved revenue.

Puppy being ever frisky changes a great deal (Barry works full time on Puppy) but the changes are outwardly not so apparant.

Reading the News page at PuppyLinux.com over the last month will show many of the changes . . .

Better printing is probably the most important but others will have their favs . . .

Thanks Danleff, that is how I fixed the problem and did not know what I did. I did re-run Lilo after the clean installation. Lobster, I will be changing to GRUB in the future. It has been on the "to do list". I want to make sure before I really foul up my hard drive.

As far as the opinion of 1.04 versus 1.03, I have been following the development of Puppy since version 0.86 (earliest version in the notebook I keep). There has been steady improvement in each new version. For me, version 1.04 is at the point where I can use it on a day to day basis. Like the others have said, it is the internal changes that count. Puppy has not shown massive growth in size unlike a lot of other commerical products.

Ok then what is the difference between 1.03 and 1.05 other than 1.04?

Read the News page, 19th July, all the new features from 1.0.3 to 1.0.4 are itemised.

I look on the forum a lot, don't know why but to learn or something,
anyhoo, upgrading to alsa sound structure might not be such a good idea
seeing how there have no5t been to many complaints about sound
and when there are it is usually taken care of immediately
just my thoughts to barry and other developers don't fix what is'nt broken
