On trying to download http://dotpups.de/dotpups/Games/gcompris/gcompris.pup I get errors. Is there an FTP version available or is it hosted anywhere else?
Thanks,
Jeffrey
Error downloading gcompris.pup from dotpups.de
try in a console:
wget -c http://dotpups.de/dotpups/Games/gcompris/gcompris.pup
I will mirror it here, but it will take 40 minutes or so to upload:

Thanks, Mark. You are remarkably quick to help!
Unfortunately that didn't work either - for some reason at work the proxy didn't appreciate that particular dotpup. I downloaded it successfully at home. My apologies for causing you unnecessary extra work.
Now all I need to do is work out how to run gcompris because with Puppy 2.12 it fails to find libpython2.3.so.1.0. (I see that /initrd/mnt/dev_save/usr/lib/python2.3/config/libpython2.3.a exists, but no other libpython2 files.) Yes, I've downloaded the other dotpups in the gcompris folder and installed them too.
Either this version of gcompris requires a different version of Puppy or this library has been missed out.
Any suggestions on how to go looking for it?
Regards,
Jeffrey.

this dotpup contains this lib, but I did not try it yet in a new Puppy:
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/Programming/p ... sarge1.pup (3.7 MB)
Please tell us, if it works.

Thanks again, Mark. I will try that and post my findings.
However, running "ldd" on gcompris I see that the following libraries are also missing:
libSDL-1.2.so.0
libSDL_mixer-1.2.so.0
libsmpeg-0.4.so.0
libartsc.so.0 (but I found libartsc.pup on your Web site so will try that).
How does one go about finding where the libraries are? I can search the Internet but that seldom locates libraries...
What would be really useful would be knowing which dotpup files were built to run against which Puppy Linux releases. (Sounds like the same old executable/library compatibility problem that plagues the computer world.)

Jeffrey.

gcompris now running nicely with Puppy 2.12 thanks!
Thanks again, Mark. I wouldn't have got there (at least not for a week!) without your help.
As one of the other posters mentioned one also needs to download libartsc.so.0 (which I got from your dotpups.de site also). And I needed libsmpeg-0.4.so.0 which I think that I got from rpmfind.net, choosing the Red Hat 7 version and installing the package from the command line using "rpm -i libsmpeg*".
I read that 1024x768 resolution didn't work and that one had to run at 800x600, but this is not the case - it runs on my old PC with the screen resolution set to 1024x768 (not that it appears to make any difference - it looks like gcompris grabs control of the screen and changes the resolution anyway). Initially running gcompris failed, so I thought that I might get a "usage" message if ran "gcompris -x" from the command line, but this gave no usage message and actually worked. So I modified the "run-gcompris" file to change "gcompris&" into "gcompris -x&" and all is well. My 5 & 8 year olds love it already!
Many thanks for your great support and DotPup files, and for Barry's amazing distribution.
Best wishes,
Jeffrey.
