I think of removing my german localization from Muppylinux.

We actually have a discussion in germany, that people supplying or even using "Killer-games" will be treated with 2 years of prison.

As Muppy includes a Software-installer supporting international repositories with Doom and Quake, this might become a problematic issue.

I will move the "games"-section from dotpups.de to the US-server puptrix.org soon, and replace the startpage with a disclaimer, that for legal reasons I cannot provide further informations about Puppy in german. (I'll add links to puppylinux.com instead).

Muppy will continue as an international system, I might join our french group and replace the german locale with french ones.
My intention is to use one locale for tests, and later provide a mechanism to easily create other localized Muppys.

It depends on the decisions of our polititians, if this scenario will become true or not.

what about a switzerland localization. I think, there are nearly no differences in language and it would keep legalized.

no, this would be problematic.
A software available for public download, created by a german, in german language.
Judges will say, such a software is intended to be downloaded by germans, even if it is hosted in switzerland and has only suiss locale.

However, lets wait how the situation develops.

I still have the hope, that some fanatic politicians will finally be stopped by the parliament.

At least Stoiber now seems to be in some trouble for other reasons, so he might no longer have the power to fight for his restrictions concerning games.

I also will have a look on how other distributors handle this topic.
As long as there is a acceptable solution, I'll continue the german port, but I'm alerted and will keep an eye on this issue.

I guess you are well aware that that kind of mindset will be the death of most multiuse device development in Germany? Like at first, how could anyone start a company in germany that sells games for the PS2/3? Then that could be extended to any device that can play a game. What will the powers that be in Deutschland do when they figure out you can run a game on SAP?

how did you make your entire translation ? I would like to localize italian Puppy but I'm getting in a stuck.

translation = 4 steps

1.) Puppys inbuilt scripts/wizards

They have no external languagefiles, so you must rewrite them.
This is not recommended, as the next update would overwrite your translation.
Instead, you should reprogram them, using variables instead of fixed strings.
Then send the modified version to the author (usually Barry or Plinej or me).

In Muppy this is not done yet, it will remain the last, most work-intensive step.

2.) add locale-files
/usr/lib/locale

You can install them with chooselocale, or add missing files like utf-8 from another distro.

3.) add languagefiles for applications like leafpad
Many apps put their translations to
/usr/share/locale/it/LC_MESSAGES/
or
/usr/local/share/locale/it/LC_MESSAGES/

Others you might extract from Debian, Knoppix, Slackware.

4.) Menu:
Muppy uses .desktop-entries in
/usr/share/applications
Those can include a translation ("XDG-menus").
