No Sound: SoundMAX AC97 card, USB install

Although I have Puppy 1.0.4 up and running from a USB pen drive, I can't get any sound from the PC.

The sound card is a SoundMAX AC97 card which, having probed the system, reports the ID numbers as 8086:266e.

Can anyone help and, if possible advise how to get the card either autodetected, or installed at bootup?
