puppylinux.org / NICE new look!

#1 Post by babbs »

Hello everyone,

Now that the /user directory (CMS) has been implamented at http://puppylinux.org, I highly remmend that you give it a visit.

From the Wiki announcement (FromChair):
Puppy Linux /user directory∞ is just activated. This means whenever a user accesses puppylinux.org, s/he will be redirected to the /user directory, where the Content Management System is located. This scheme is part of Puppy enthusiasts' efforts to organize knowledge and help around an easily accessible place for users of Puppy Linux. The other Puppy sites are not made less important with this move - those other, equally wonderful sites of and for Puppies will always be at the front page of the User's Home.

Maybe we can keep /home as archive of testimonials (especially the long ones - it's easy to archive it there). This will un-clutter the CMS while keeping the very useful ones.

Am hoping that a huge number of positive testimonials will become the spring-board for action that will carry the Foundation forward, some sort of "critical mass".

Cheers!
All I can say is WOW, nice new look!

Babbs

google and yahoo stats

#2 Post by puppian »

Glad to know that you like the new site babbs :D
Below are some google and yahoo stats:

linux distro fast small (3 / 9,150,000 results)
fast small distro (1 / 437,000 results)
small fast linux (30 / 20,100,000 results)
small fast puppy (4 / 1,870,000 results)
fast small linux livecd (4 / 315,000 results)
fast small livecd (5 / 339,000 results)
fast small free linux distro (1 / 6,830,000 results)
fast small free distro (2 / 439,000 results)

fast linux distro (11 / 782,000 results)
fast small free linux (2 / 13,300,000 results)

Google is quite lazy, other pages of the site would take two months or so to get indexed.

Want to help puppy get better ranking? Here are two ways :)

1. Post a comment at the site, including in your comment the words that you think people would type in the search box when searching for a operating system like puppy (e.g, 'linux'). (the higher the keyword density, the higher the rank; the higher the keyword position in the page, the higher the rank)

2. Link to the site:

Code: Select all

<a href='http://puppylinux.org/' title='Puppy Linux - your fast, small and free Linux distro' target='_self'>Puppy Linux</a> - your fast, small and free Linux distro
And here's a good article.

Quick climb in searches

#3 Post by raffy »

Thanks, Babbs. Puppian was very enthusiastic and labored hard to get the site up quickly.

In 5 days of its moving to its new home, it's already topping the searches (as Puppian already showed).

More volunteers needed for writing documentation and help...

Aahhh, everyone can feel the fun - after all, it's almost Christmas!

Let's give away Puppies this Christmas...

puppylinux.org is one year old! So how well have we been doing? Below you will find the latest search engine statistics.

linux distro fast small (1 / 2,140,000 results)
fast small distro (1 / 757,000 results)
small fast linux (5 / 173,000,000 results)
small fast puppy (1 / 1,380,000 results)
fast small linux livecd (3 / 504,000 results)
fast small livecd (1 / 566,000 results)
fast small free linux distro (1 / 1,630,000 results)
fast small free distro (1 / 632,000 results)

fast linux distro (6 / 2,520,000 results)
fast small free linux (2 / 12,000,000 results)

As you can see we are doing better than before :D Special thanks to Raffy, Lobster, J_Rey, Ted Dog, Mark, Barry (of course!) and many others for making all these possible. Other recent improvements made to the site that you may have already noticed are:
auto thumbnails for the Web Links pages
RSS support (ability to generate as well as parse a feed; feed caching)
new shoutbox with support for bbcode and mouse-over tooltip
new emoticons
tech. video for Members page
member list with more information
new avatars in different categories for members to choose from; etc.

Some planned future improvements that will help search engine to index the site better are dynamic page titles and a cached sitemap. We will be targeting at other more popular keywords as well (for example, linux and download).

P.S. Has anyone seen Babbs, the member who has started this thread? His website is still there - http://www.babcock.us , but I haven't heard from him for so long, I hope he is fine...

Nope. According to the "view all posts" button in his profile, he hasn't posted since "Fri May 05, 2006 21:28". :?

APEC Open Source Symposium

#6 Post by raffy »

What a coincidence!

Yesterday, it was December 5 (in this part of the world) and I presented Puppy Linux and VIA PC-1 as a solution package for an affordable PC in education / elearning.

Many countries are represented here in the Hanoi symposium. So expect more hits in the coming days and months. Please note, too, that the recent launch of the affordable PC workshop (with VIA et al) landed us in the http://viapc-1.com and http://desktoplinux.com websites.

Thanks for all the labor, Puppian. Cheers!

That's cool!!

No wonder the site seems a bit slow. I had added a favicon but now it's removed to save some server resources.
More hits is good thou :D:D
