The future of Puppy is to reshape the universe in Barry's image.....

New releases are roughly every couple months. Of course, you can always skip several releases and just upgrade every six months or so. Whatever walks your dog.

For the content of new versions, it's best to keep up with Barry's developer blog
http://www.puppyos.net/news/

The big changes for the next version (2.14) are XDG menus and improved PETget support.

The great thing about Puppy is that you don't have to format your hard drive to upgrade.

1. Frugal install - simply copy vmlinuz, initrd.gz, pup_2.xx.sfs and zdrv_2.xx.sfs over the existing copies.

2. Full install - run the Puppy Universal Installer from Start>Setup menu, follow the prompts for a normal install and select UPGRADE when asked.

Puppy 2.14 is now in Alpha testing, so it will be a little while yet. As Pizzasgood says, the development team aims at 4-6 weeks between new releases, but 2.14 has some significant changes and may take a little longer.

Hope that helps

SmallTux,

What future do you want?

One of the nice things about Puppy is the Remastering ability of this linux variant. So you can train Puppy to be your obedient lapdog in the manner of your own liking.

Personally I don't chase every version change. Currently using v2.10 personally though I am handing out v2.13 to students. Probably won't make another version change till v2.15 is out.

I would actually welcome multi-user. I don't see root as dangerous within the scope that Puppy is intended to be used, but multiuser does widen the things you can do with it a little.

What I wouldn't like is a pre-set root password, or forcing people to use user accounts. It should allow you to continue using root like multi-user doesn't exist, unless you wish to use it.

As for dangerous, so is walking to class every day. I have to cross the busy street four times on an average day, plus several minor streets and parking lots.

agreement from my side too! Especially the LiveCD shouldn't have it build in. However, it would be nice if an installed version (HDD, frugal, USB) would have the option to do so.

Give me the 'danger' and less of the FUD. Just because you read it, don't make it so.

Why is it dangerous? How? To whom?

Who is the mysterious hacker trying to hack into an obscure Linux system on a single machine running in ram? Bill Gates if it is you . . . go write a decent operating system . . .

:)

For those who want to mount and unmount (anothe Linux anachronism) - good luck

For those who wish to multi-user (many people, one machine) a wizard would be a good option.

Pizzasgood and Nathan are working towards such projects? Do we have anything on the horizon?

Puppy Linux - it's dangerous (yep I like it already)

Lobster,

it isn't dangerous in terms of external intrusion. There are 3 scenarios I can see a user account method to have advantages:
- prevention of accidental modification of something crucial w/o warning (pop-up to enter password)
- a PC is used by several people with a HDD or frugal install
- on a laptop to prevent quick access to the stored info

Let me elaborate on the last point. I carry my laptop around with business info on it and am not always able to have it under control all the time. My BIOS is password protected so there's no quick access by booting from something but the HDD. The OS uses user accounts so just booting it won't give access to the data either. Sure, I could encrypt the data and have it secured that way but personally I like it better with a log-in at boot and I have the data encrypted in case the thing gets stolen.... That's why my laptop doesn't run Puppy (yet) but will run Grafpup once 2.0 is ready for prime time. I love the increased speed I get from running in RAM and the additional space I will gain on the HDD.

That makes perfect sense . . .
Pizzasgood has such an option in Pizzapup which is in Beta and hopefully we can get it into the first official Puppy from the Community - Puppy V aka Viz

Puppy 2.15 . . . if some of our contributing Vizards are up to it . . .

Lobster,

yes, I like the way Puppy is evolving! Unfortunately my programming skills are so lousy that I would never even try to contribute any of my code for fear to be responsible for the death of a contributer (laughing to death).

Nevertheless I have a dream and maybe it's something which could be considered for a future version.
Have a regular LiveCD as today which allows the user to really assemble a fully customized version with ONLY the programs he/she likes. Naturally it can be done with unleashed but that's a bit beyond what a simple user can do.
Bottom line: a "program" which let's the user select everything from the desktop manager to language to programs and whatever is available in the repositories and adds all dependencies. When finished an iso file is generated to burn that customized version or the option to install it on a USB FLASH. The diamond powder on top of the gold plating (Puppy) would be if the user could select either from package groups or the programs and if the "configurator" would show some description of the highlighted package. Example: click the graphics group to basically make a Grafpup

What this would achieve as a side effect is that there wouldn't be a need for all the derivatives of Puppy and the efforts of all contributors could be consolidated for an even improved maintenance of one single version (plus less confusion for people which Puppy is the best one).

I like the availability of different distributions but it's really getting to the point where it makes matters worse then better (just looking at distrowatch) and splitting the available resources within a certain type of distro into yet another set of subversions doesn't seem to be efficient.

This was the idea with Puppy Meaty . . . which turned out very different (as Puppy 2.03CE)

Wish list?

#1) ALL media works out-of-the-box.

#2) Auto. connects to library repositorys. (solves some of problem #1)

#3) A Union file system that works properly on /, maybe AUFS.

#4) A larger selection of SFS files that span a wider varitey of apps.

#5) Puppy Foundation support of interest groups (PLUGs), & projects.
