towards feature set and reliability testing
In RC1 (Release Candidate 1) Opera is replaced with the plague free SeaMonkey - for various pragmatic reasons described elsewhere
Release Candidate 1 will have Clear "Glass Icons", Blue Paw Background, Seamonkey 1.08 (compatibility with past and future Puppys and small size), Offline web page, all available fixes, Pfind 1.0 etc.
We are now moving towards feature set and reliability testing

Notwithstanding that, I've been working away creating a "masterpiece" as shown below, this Monday afternoon in Oz.Lobster wrote:In RC1 (Release Candidate 1) Opera is replaced with the plague free SeaMonkey - for various pragmatic reasons described elsewhere

WhoDo I've followed those earlier instructions and attach here two compressed jpg's of desktops reduced to 800wide. Full sized images in uncompressed pngs are linked.
I've created iconised desktop buttons as described between the two images.
Click here for full sized desktop image.
I changed icons on existing desktop starts for my preference...
"Documents" to home48.png - on Standard version
"Documents" to home.png - on Office version
"Media" to multimedia48.png - familiarity and the one in the beta didn't mean anything to me
"Media" to multimedia.png - used this as an alternative on the Office Version.
"Internet" to seamonkey.png - cos we are assured it will be in the final release
I renamed "Configuration" to "Configure" to shorten it to align correctly
"Network" >>> (/usr/local/bin/LinNeighborhood)
/usr/local/lib/X11/pixmaps/network.png - used on Office Version
/usr/local/lib/X11/pixmaps/samba2.png - would be my personal choice, used on Standard
"ScreenCap" >>> (mtpaintsnapshot.sh)
/usr/local/lib/X11/pixmaps/camera.png
"Gaim" >>> (/usr/sbin/gaimshell)
/usr/local/lib/X11/pixmaps/gaim32.png
"ShutDown" >>> (/usr/X11R7/bin/wmpoweroff)
/usr/local/lib/X11/pixmaps/shutdown.png
I should look for reboot icon as well, and will check what SuSE uses; I think shutdown is red anyway.
"Find File" >>> (/usr/local/bin/pfind)
/usr/local/lib/X11/pixmaps/find24xpm (needs larger plus png)
Background on the Standard (above) is adapted from one of the Linspire v5 release competition entries.
Background on the Office (below) is adapted from the current default for PC-BSD.
You can also see the short-cut to start simpress in the Office Version. The application isn't in the Standard Version. All the starts work in both ice-wm and jwm, as you would expect. The Power Off one was just a momentary inspiration
I think it would be a disservice to users of the Standard product to not supply a working PowerPoint type application; the downloadable add-on hasn't worked since I came on board with v 2.02 beta.
Indeed, the utility which shows pie charts of mounted partitions has never registered correctly with the top of the taskbar either (since I've been around), note where it is located on the image below. I think that should be fixed if it is part of the distributions (both of them).
Click here for full sized desktop image.

I think what you have done is superb. It might seem plain and simple but that is one of Puppys strengths. Changing the desktop is so easy nowadays. The default desktop background (a blue paw) has been decided for RC1 but I for one like the diaganol stripe and the icon layout is making sense - though I would use the screencap I think shutterbug can go (we have a working screen capture) and also not sure about the media icon . . .
this is good stuff

Mate I appreciate your comments. I enjoy trying things with puppy... it seems more amenable than most of the several other OS's I've played with.
I'm going through all my machines installing new pup-save files with the 2.15ce betas and having a ball. Being able to boot multiple configurations is a great blessing, and perhaps an undocumented (maybe largely undocumented?) thing... with say half a gig per configuration it sure beats installing to multiple partitions too.
When I get to understand the XDG menuing I'll have a go at doing a more logical menuing system that will dazzle ex-MS users with its sheer brilliance lol
Had an idea, actually, which I'm going to try on one of my old IBM Aptivas with the opening drive bay door.
Install a second CD drive behind the door, and leave the puppy CD permanently in there. Install an HDD on a bracket internally. Still room for a fourth IDE behind the door, like a 3-1/2inch card reader perhaps.
A fully functional 21st century low profile tower that will do everything
When I get it tried out I'll make a post about it.
http://eagles-lair.dyndns.org/serverfarm.html shows them all off, several ducks in a row Actually I gave one away to a friend, running (initially) a single 80Gb IDE HDD, booting from a NASLite floppy >> RAM file server.

Re: towards feature set and reliability testing
Actually, Lob, after you had to leave the last meeting there was a quick discussion about look-and-feel issues. Everything you say here is correct except that the blue power paw background, although included, will NOT be the default.Lobster wrote:Release Candidate 1 will have Clear "Glass Icons", Blue Paw Background, Seamonkey 1.08 (compatibility with past and future Puppys and small size), Offline web page, all available fixes, Pfind 1.0 etc.

The community has asked me to find an alternative blue background that better displays the glass icons. I have a candidate already, but if Richard wants to contribute his two backgrounds for consideration, I'll be happy to trial them too.
Puppy 2.15CE RC1 is on track for release next week. A few more bugs to sort before then, but I'm pleased with the progress to date. BTW, I have also developed a velvet theme to match a blue background and it looks GREAT!
Cheers
Re: towards feature set and reliability testing
Be pleased to do so. The one with a stripe reminds me a bit of a football gurnsey (or jersey/jumper according to where you are from and what code of football is being played )WhoDo wrote:The community has asked me to find an alternative blue background that better displays the glass icons. Just a note; while I'm happy to contribute them, I didn't do any design per se, I merely adapted designs used elsewhere

Re: towards feature set and reliability testing
Actually SuSE 9.3 and 9.1 (I don't have 10 and later installed anywhere currently) don't have big button icons for logout, reboot and shutdown.richard.a wrote:I've created iconised desktop buttons as described between the two images.

But WindowsXP does and here are what appears be to the the default colouring and design...
I think it would be nice if we could change that menu item to throw out not a sub menu but a dialogue like that.
Wonder if this is useful or just a red herring?

How much is being cut out of OpenOffice? Will there be an easy (PETget?) way to add back in the functionality that's being cut out?
I'm starting to realize that I'd like to have the whole thing, and it appears that all that's going to be available, even in Office, is a severely cut-down version. (Which doesn't make all that much different anyway - like cutting down Seamonkey, my understanding is that the big hit in OpenOffice is with the first app in the suite, which requires the platform stuff: once you've bitten off that, the rest of the apps themselves are a small incremental difference.)
Really, I want Puppy to still be leaner than the 700 MB regular distros, but I've got no problem with 200-300 MB to deliver a very rich application set.
As I see it, V/Std is pretty lean, but still highly functional. Viz/Office is not longer lean, but has darn near everythign you're likely to want, working right out of the box...

Nothing is being cut out. It will be the whole Magilla!Springer wrote:How much is being cut out of OpenOffice? Will there be an easy (PETget?) way to add back in the functionality that's being cut out?
we're still working toward a sub-100Mb Standard Edition, and an Office Edition that peaks well below 290Mb, but available in several easy-to-download 100Mb+ chunks. Both should be possible if we can get the right people working on some more sfs plug-ins for Puppy. That is the real "growth area" for contributions to Puppy's future, and any efforts in that area won't become redundant with every new release. They will simply plug in to whatever Standard Edition is currently available, unless there are some serious underlying changes in the file system - say aufs replaces unionfs for example. Even then they may still work.Springer wrote:Really, I want Puppy to still be leaner than the 700 MB regular distros, but I've got no problem with 200-300 MB to deliver a very rich application set.

Current squash file plug-ins available or due out are:
Open Office 2.10 .... OOo_215.sfs (NathanF)
Puppy Graphics Stuff ... pgs_215.sfs (NathanF and PakG)
Web add-ons ... web_215.sfs (Pizzasgood)
Development pack .... devx_215.sfs (BarryK)
Fltk C++ Graphical Develpment .... fltkc++_215.sfs (Tronkel)
Still looking for Multimedia stuff ... mms_215.sfs (anyone?)
Cheers

Providing shutterbug is not too large I would like it to stay. I have found the ability to vary the delay time is quite handy.Lobster wrote: I think shutterbug can go (we have a working screen capture)
Linux = Learning through doing  :? :D
The learning curve may be steep but there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
You just have to pass the occasional oncoming train to get there.

Actually Shutterbug HAS to stay IF you want Xfe File Manager. It carries the necessary dependencies and Xfe won't run without it.Billwho? wrote:Providing shutterbug is not too large I would like it to stay.
