Well, I tried it, but now Puppy doesn't even boot up anymore. It shows the puppy screen, I press a key, then it shows a page of the loading stuff, and then it just keeps giving me an error. I'm not sure what it was, but I don't wanna bother looking at it again.

Is there a way I can make it so I don't need my CD to boot up puppy? Could I somehow change the Boot.ini file?
If you are using XP try this:

Alright, that I understood.

Now, as for my previous post, I fixed the error by deleting an unused partition from my computer.

As for my new problem, I can locate the file you gave me in mtn/home, but when I click on it it opens in a text editor. How would I make it run like you say?

Damn, linux is confusing. xD

I think sometime in the distant future when I get CD's, I'll get a few Linux for Dummies books too. :|

The name of the file must be

wifi-1.0.4-beta-2.pup

With no other extensions, or it will not work

Okay, I've gotten it installed. It shows my card in the list [DWL-G650 Rev.C], but it doesn't automatically detect it.

I type modprobe rdiswrapper into the console shell, and it isn't exactly like it shows in the html help file, but it's close nonetheless.

So right now I'm gonna try and get some info to input into wireless.cfg

After that, what would I do? Some of this is confusing me, and I'm not sure I'm even doing the steps right, or even in the correct order

When you download it save it in the same place where you have your pup001 file..
Found it in /mnt/home under Linux
bladehunter wrote: Then boot puppy......click on rox
browse to /mnt/home
click on the file to install
during the install and readme will open and a help file in dillo web browser...
Read them very carefully and if you have any problems report back
:)
I have done the following so far, not sure what to do next:

1. Opened /etc/rc.d/rc.local with beaver
2. Added . /etc/rc.d/rc.wireless
3. Added /sbin/dhcpd wlan0
4. Saved and exited beaver
5. Removed the wired nic from the pcmcia port and inserted the Buffalo/Broadcom G54 wireless nic

What next, please?

Thanks! doc

Paul (aka blackadder) spent alot of time writing the wifi help file......Everything you need to know is written down there.....He spent the time doing that so it wasn't needed to repeat the same info over and over again everytime someone wanted to get there card going.

this is the online version

I read that and tried to follow the other instructions I found here online and in the readme file.

Boot jams up here:

wlan0: encryption modes supported: WEP, WPA with TKIP, WPA with AES/CCMP
/etc/rc.d/rc.local: /sbin/dhcp: No such file or directory

I have to run some errands but when I return I hope to figure out what it is I did wrong and fix it. Actually tried to Read and Follow the Manual this time and still missed something!

Have to try and boot to Puppy around the error first.

Dem eyes, dem eyes!

It occurs to me that this will have to be created on every different computer. Is this a file I can add to my CD or USB?

Just tried to edit /etc/rc.d/rc.local using suse but after the reboot it doesn't see the one I created before .

the edited /etc/rc.d/rc.local is stored in you pup001 file......so every time you run it on a different computer that file will need to be edited, as well as installing the wifi package

Will it cause a problem if I place the rc.local file (or some other plain text file that contains the settings) on the CD and USB and just do a copy to rc.local when on a different PC?

You need to
1. install the package
2. edit wireless.conf
3. edit rc.local
4. if you have a look in rc.wireless there is some code for dhcpcd as well

The way you install to multiple machines is up to you

I cannot figure out how to get past the error!

I tried
/sbin/dhcpcd but it complains that

**** /sbin/dhcpcd: already running
**** /sbin/dhcpcd: if not then delete /etc/dhcpc/dhcpcd-eth0.pid file

I tried delete /etc/dhcpc/dhcpcd-eth0.pid but no such file or directory

How do I get at the /etc/rc.d/rc.local file from here so I may edit it?

Thanks! doc

Should I report this in the bug area of the Forum?

If one is actually unable to break out to fix a problem like this I am guessing it is either a bug or an undocumented feature ... ;-)

I cannot get into Puppy at all so I am unable to use any Puppy editing features. I do have a minimal X version of Suse 9.2 loaded. Do i need to boot that and delete the pup001 file?

you could just rename the pup001 file instead of deleting it. then puppy will create a new one for you.

this is an easy solution, assuming that you don't have a ton of personal files stored on pup001.

how much work you want to put into fixing this is dependent on how much you have to lose

/sbin/dhcpcd wlan0

Then you want to remove any files that have wlan0 in their name.

Code: Select all

. /etc/rc.d/rc.wireless
rm /etc/dhpc/*wlan0.pid
/sbin/dhcpcd wlan0
dhcpcd takes an argument that is the name of the interface in your case wlan0

What you can do if running from cdrom is pick option 3

When asked for a partiton just press enter without specifying anything

let puppy boot..it will make a complaints but that's cool.

when puppy gets to the GUI either logout or press ctrl-alt-backspace

Now the tricky part replace xxx with your partition name

#mount /dev/xxx /mnt/home
#mkdir /tmp/pup001
#mount /mnt/home/pup001 /tmp/pup001 -o loop
#mp /tmp/pup001/.etc/rc.d/rc.local

after you edit the file (removing\modifying the offending code) press ctrl-q and Y to save

#umount /tmp/pup001

#reboot

And boot as normal

I'll say it is tricky ... df under rxvt just gives me rootfs, tmpfs and /dev/loop0

Not much to work with.

I am missing something ... again ... sorry. doc

I think you'll have to describe your computer setup and tell me where your pup001 file lives

OK, I have Puppy loaded on the 600X and it is doing wonderfully.

I reloaded the edgarbrits app and made the mods, correctly this time, to the rc.local file.

Ran things and all went well except that none of the drivers appear to work with my Buffalo G54 wireless pcmcia nic.

I tried several of them. The two Broadcoms which I might have guessed might work were rejected, the 3c574_cs and wavelan_cs loaded but did not actually work.

I posted the requested details about the Buffalo G54 elsewhere on the Forum and can repost that if it would help.

Sure would be awesome to get it working as I have the Ticker and Radio working and the next two projects are Thingamablog and booting from my USB stick ... then on to the 600E.

Thanks! doc
