PeaZip 2.0-GTK2 released March 21 2008

PeaZip is an OS-portable file archiver, released under LGPL for Windows and Linux (Linux version requires libgdk_pixbuf library).
It supports it's native Pea archive format (featuring compression, splitting and flexible encryption and integrity check schemes) and other mainstream formats, with especial focus on handling open formats:

* Full support
o 7Z, 7Z-sfx, BZip2, GZip/TGZ, PAQ8F, PAQ8JD, PAQ8L, PEA, QUAD, split (.001), TAR, ZIP
* Browse/extract support
o ARJ, CAB, CHM, CPIO, ISO, Java archives (JAR, EAR, WAR), Linux installers (DEB, PET/PUP, RPM), LHA, LZH, PAK/PK3/PK4, Open Office file types, RAR, Windows installers (NSIS, some MSI), Z
* Compression only
o Strip/UPX for executables

Uninstall previous version before installing!

Includes unace & multi resolution icons in /usr/local/share/pixmaps.

XArchive - very small & included in Puppy.

Xarchiver - add on, bigger but not bad for added function.

PeaZip is big & not for everyone.

Ya, but how much bigger. If the features are enough, 1mb wont make a difference.

Hi! Thank you for taking interest in trying PeaZip.
Actually PeaZip is quite big in Linux mainly due to the size of executables generated by the Lazarus IDE I use: I stripped the three executables I generated (peazip and, in /res, gwrap and pea) down to 2,5 / 3 MB each but they are still huge compared to typical executables.
UPX compression (which I uses on Windows port of the very same executables, reducing the sizes down to 5-600KB each) gave me some issues on some of my Linux test machines, so I don't apply it, but maybe in the future I'll may consider to use it... however, generally speaking, my development environment is not wery well suited toward generation of tiny executables.
Another factor you should consider about PeaZip's size is that all backend applications are inclued in the package, that brings quite a big space overhead (5,3 MB of third parts binaries: POSIX 7z, quad, paq8*); however you could delete unwanted files if you need to support less executables.

By the way, after I read some format specification about .pup and .pet packages I did some tests with PeaZip (the .pup file you uploaded and a .pet package, abiword-2.4.5.pet) and I'm glad to see that PeaZip is able to open those formats through POSIX-7z binary.
If you want to test it, remember that PeaZip would prevent to open file types not supported (by checking the extension), so you should change file extension i.e. to .zip and it will open in PeaZip.
Even if as for I can see it would definitely better to NOT use it to write/update files in those formats (which have a slightly different structure), it could be useful to inspect, preview and (partially or totally) extract a .pup or .pet package's content, and I'm considering about adding them as (read)supported formats so next version of PeaZip can recognize and open them.

I'll update ASAP the link on PeaZip index pointing to the correct PUP repository.
Briefly, main news in 1.8 version are:
- added read/extract support for ACE archives;
- p7zip frontend updated to version 4.47.1 (supports AES encrypted ZIP, faster and multithreaded Deflate/Deflate64...);
- the program is now able to open files whith associated application, open dirs and URLs in Gnome and KDE;
- doubleclick action in archive browser is now customizable;
- various fixes and enhancements...

Hi, I just updated PeaZip project to 1.9.1
I moved unace to external plugin so now the base package contains only open source software under OSI-approved licenses.
Support was added to newest PAQ, PAQ8O, wich improves multimedia compression, and for LPAQ1, a light version of PAQ wich uses less memory and is much more fast while keeping a very high compression ratio.

Nice! For the icon, you can use it replacing PeaZip's one which gets installed in .\opt\kde3\share\icons\
The background is a nice idea too, maybe it's time I update my PeaZip-related media packages with some backgrounds too.
