Puppy-1.0.4 with XFree 4.5.0 & madwifi (wireless drivers

#1 Post by Guest »

Kernel Config

1 Includes built in madwifi drivers (atheros chipset) eg current Dlink DWL-G630 & DWL-G510

2 Modules for NFS client and server (probably not needed by all) a dotpup with NFS-Utils and portmap is in the pipeline

XFree-4.5.0

Drivers for I810,neomagic,vmware and vesa other's will be available soon

Ok now for the tricky stuff

Upon booting instead of being dropped straight into a GUI session there will be a 5 second pause a config program will run...type yes at the end

Obvisiously the only drivers available are the 4 mentioned previously

Booting after configuration will go straight to the GUI session

To be honest this may only serve a limited audience, those with i810 and neomagic cards and those wanting kernel support for wireless cards supported by madwifi...

Hopefully I'll be able to continue with the XFree Puppies and has I get gain more experience and better feedback they will become more user friendly.

Sounds great, bladehunter! I'm looking forward to testing it.

I'm going to see if I can use a friend's broadband connection to download it (I'm on a slow dialup :( )

http://www.edgarbrits.net/puppy/XFree-1 ... ee-drivers

Contains all the others drivers in the XFree collection gzipped.....wonder over and pick what you want....
They live in /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/

Also
http://www.xfree86.org/4.5.0/

has all the notes for the new releases...scrolling down you will find a link to drivers...also there is info for setting up keyboard mapping which should work this time around

Sounds really sweet. I will test this immediately.*

Thank you!

*Some delay may be caused by my dial up connection.

Hey Bladehunter are you on some new medication!

Your last few posts to the forum have been calm collected and coherent

Even I (from WA with a low IQ) can now understand most of your "Bladespeak"

Congrats on the new Puppy

Bladehunter, thank you so, so much for this. I had a slight problem trying to get my nvidia card configured, and I'm sure to try it a couple more times to be sure that I have it right, but this release brings Puppy parrallel (for me) with my Debian install...

 I can actually watch movies now

Look here, this has made my day, to say the least. Cheers, out.

If Debian use XFree-4.4.0 I'm sure that config would work with 4.5.0 just copy it into Puppy's /etc/X11

It's a slightly differrent version, or at least the layout of xfree86config is differrent. I'm getting it sorted out.

So far, by simply copying it over I get absolutely perfect video playback, but the fonts are all messed up. I'll have to mix and match between the two files, I'm getting there. This is awesome.

One more litttle reason that my other distro is going to be seeing a whole lot less of me :D

What you could try is backup /etc/X11/XF86Config

Kill the gui session

At the prompt type
#X -config

copy the config it writes in /root to /etc/X11/XF86Config

start gui by typing xwin

see how it goes and report back if you could

Well, it's gone real well, except I'm having the same issue with it that I'm having with my Debian configuration, namely I can't seem to have very nice looking fonts. I've forgotten of course to write down or backup the original config file (which as we all know is a very trendy, cool thing to do this time of year!)

SO...

Could you please give me the list of font directories according to your xfree86 config file? Thank you.

Asides from that, this is rockin'. I'm noticing a real, real improvement here, like my standard of living just went up or something. Like I said, I can watch movies full screen with mplayer with no ill effects, where as before I could not. Also, when browsing the web or writing in Abiword, I can quickly scroll down the pages, wher as before everything would kind of blur or stutter, if that makes sense at all.

Good job, I'm sold.

Cheers :D

Code: Select all

# FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/local/"
    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/"
# FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled"
# FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled"
# FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/"
    FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/"
# FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType/"
# FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/freefont/"
# FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/"
# FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/"
To add any extra fonts adds 10's of megabytes

The fonts are the ones as per statndard Puppy, with the addition of a cursor font in the misc directory.....

If you are interested the additional fonts from the XFree ftp site are able to be added but be warned it takes alot of extra space.

I was just about to download this and burn a CD when I remembered someone saying that the Buffalo/Broadcom driver w/ndiswrapper is pending for a few more days?

Is that correct?

I have PCI and pcmcia-pccard-cardbus-whatever Buffalo cards and would really like to get them working under Puppy.

Thanks! doc

This version only has support for Atheros based wireless cards....

The wifi dotpup should be online for testing in a few hours :)
