H-P Laserjet 4 will only print with US Letter size paper

#1 Post by downsouth »

When I try to print on my Laserjet 4 from Abiword, Beaver or Leafpad,
the printer calls for US letter paper, no matter what settings I used.
I installed Star Office 5.1, and this doesn't happen. My Epson C41
works with all programs. Any way of fixing this? (or finding something
much smaller than Star Office which works) ?
Otherwise, fantastic distro - even managed my first remaster with it.

I think you can go to /root/.Abisuite/templates/normal.awt and change pagesize pagetype, like this:

<pagesize pagetype="A4"

I think Abiword controls the printing. I'm not quite shure though, but It's worth a try.

bon chance

Merci, mais mal chance.

Normal.awt already shows A4 as setting. I even went though Abiword
executable with a hex editor to see if I could make a simple change
(fixed Nedit's print command this way) - no good. Abiword's own site
has this bug listed as fixed, and then re-submitted.

What about AbiWord.Profile?

I had to exchange this file for a rather large one to make things work the way I wanted it. In the original (that comes with puppy) there is no place where you could simply replace us-letter with A4, but I have something about this in my file. You wanna try it?

Its's with Norwegian as interface language though...

What about printer setup in PDQ?
Go to the menu:

Control panel -> Xpdq printer management

Then with the default printer highlighted, click the "Driver options" button, see if it is set to a4, not letter.

Kark - Tried Custom setting - still no go.

Barry - double checked settings - a4 selected - still no go.

I think this is a HP thing - Laserjet flashes 'load letter paper',
and Deskjet 500 just sits there. Epson C41 works fine (a4),
so I'll stick with it. I made a remaster for a sceptical mate,
who has a laserjet - had to say 'won't print' unless you install
Star Office or Open Office. Aspersions were cast at Linux.
I'd use Chubby puppy, but need java1.4.2 (added to my remaster.)

Thanks anyway, guys.

My old HP Deskjet has no problem.
(it's the original Deskjet model, old as the hills, but they made them tough back then).
