looking for a working .pup of the aprs program Xistar

You haven't made your request very attractive.

What does it do?
What does it do that puppy doesn't have already?

I realize tht this thread is somewhat old, but I think it deserves some elaboration:

The APRS variants, such as XASTAR & X-APRS are used to track the user's location and trajectory/course. It has use in search & rescue ops, as well as anything else you want to track, like a bike race, parade/walk for life, etc. It also provides real-time tactical communications for emergency use.

Although some of these apps have been ported to linux, I haven't located any puppy packages/.pets as yet. There are repositories for this in Debian, Ubuntu, and PC-BSD that I'm aware of, and I believe the Debian/Ubuntu repositories can be used in puppy. Slackware's repository appears to have been broken, and is not, in my opinion, worth considering at this time.

I don't know how to compile these for puppy, but I thought I'd elaborate on this, as it is apparently a relatively unknown application. I'm also not sure how these apps would work in a virtual pc, but I hope this explanation helps clarify somewhat what it is/does.

do you know where the sources are located? I googled it and couldn't find a website.

Regarding the source code for this, I believe you might find that in the debian or ubuntu repos. I will place a better answer here after I search for them. I should be able to find them easier since I'm already well-aquainted with the apps and the usage, ttux.

UPDATE: I'm back with the url for source code:

You will note at the top left is a link for source code, and another for binaries. I've tried both of these and only the source code link seems to work. I hope this helps everyone interested.

Personal note: After looking at what's involved with this I may try to run WinAPRS under WINE instead! Yeah....I'm a tad bit lazy here....so?

well I compiled it on 2.14X, kind of a paint it needed a few things like GraphicsMagick-1.3.12, openmotif-2.3.1, proj-4.7.0, so I tossed them all together and made a pet

Thanks for taking time to compile it, ttuuxxx. I downloaded and installed on my 4.20 machine, but got a msg for a lot of missing dependencies. It won't start up on my system.

I had to wonder....why did you compile on an older version of puppy? Is this what you normally run on your machine? I really need to study up on how to do all this again here, but it's been so long since I've done such a thing I have no clue. Time to go back to the puppy archives I saw detailing this.

The reason why is that I spent well over hundreds and maybe of thousands of hours updating a version of puppy to where its near the latest version so that old computers can run on it, maybe you missed it it, it has 608,043 views and almost 300 posted pages on here, it works on most of latest hardware and takes about 50% less memory than puppy 5.0, basically if it works on your system its the go, I have 1gb video card, 4gb of ram, 2TB of hard drive space and its my main OS for over 2yrs now.

Holy cow, dude! That's a major time investment you have there. For the record, however, I want you to know that I meant no insult, just curious. I use the newer versions here because they work on my own machines out-of-box, so to speak. I didn't get the drivers I wanted for my ath5k wifi (8187?) for instance, on my netbooks, or some screen driver for my desktop unit, among other reasons. I've since found these drivers somewhere, but no longer need them. I use my systems mostly to show off to others that are intimidated by linux, and don't want to show them something for which they'd have to go scrounging about for various drivers/tweaks, etc....

Thanks again for sharing the .pet, and I wonder if the other guy actually has tried it out?

Is there an updated PET for xastir elsewhere on the Forum, or another download site, please?

In theory the making of a PET from the xastir-2.0.4.tar.gz should be easy, using a utility provided with many versions of Puppy, but my experience is that I break stuff when I try those things.

BTW: Because it works on all of the hardware here, and I can't possibly keep up with all of the versions of Puppy, I am running Exprimo 5x15.
