Anti-Virus & Anti-Spyware Apps

#1 Post by PupSki »

I've searched for hours on many of the Puppy pages and found not one mention of Anti-Spyware Apps. or Anti-Virus Apps.
Are any available? Or are they totally unnecessary when you "RUN with The PUP"?? :?

I have a rather new,
home built Intel Celeron
with a 3,21 GHz CPU.
1.46Gb of DDR Ram.
Running WinXPH 2002 with sp2
Maxtor 6 L300SO SATA Hard Drive
Maxtor 6 Y120LO IDE Hard Drive
IDE CD Writer
IDE Lite-On DVD Writer
Numerous Partitions
I surf with The Opera Browser (8.54)
[Had trouble with 9.0 and reverted back]
But Opera wins hands down over Firefox any day!
And of course I don't like M$IE!

Phillips IR Wireless Keyboard
Logitek RF Wireless Track Ball
Both have USB receivers (and I REALLY love both!!!)

I found the various utilities and downloaded and
burned The Puppy (2.15CE Final).
I booted it up and found numerous utilities
including a Firewall. But in all the hours of reading
the various associated web pages, I never found even
a hint of an Anti-Virus Application or
an Anti-Spyware Application................
Are they totally unnecessary when you "RUN with The PUP"??

I seemed to have a bit of trouble configuring my modem, also.
But, I really didn't want to go online anyway until I resolved this
issue.

Thanks for all the work that went into these "OS".

Any help would be appreciated. :D

Welcome to Puppy Linux

I think we are too busy having fun too worry about spyware apps. Not much worry about viruses either.

1) F-Prot makes a good and free Linux anti-virus software

2) Puppy comes with an easy to install firewall

3) Configure your browser wisely

4) ?????

5) ?????

PS - looks like you have a great computer

Linux Setup for Going Online

#5 Post by PupSki »

Hi craftybytes,

Thanks for you're help with Modem Setup.

Was I supposed to change forums since we are no longer

talking about Antivirus Apps.??

We are continuing the same thread - SetUp....

Software wouldn't help. I had to remove the modem

and get a magnifying glass to get the numbers.

It is:

Lucent Win modem for standard "Dial-Up"

Model# F1156IV/A2A

It was also listed elsewhere without the slash:

F1156IVA2A

The Puppy seemed to recognize it, but I possibly

didn't have all the right SPECS. to enter in the boxes.

Re: The Machine....... Yeah! With all I put into it,

I thought it would be faster than a "Screemin Demon" .......

Alas! With "Winblow$ XP" and all the necessary

Security Apps. it's slow as Molasses in January

(that's our January Mate, not your's)

Of course, one of my weaknesses is downloading different Apps.

to try them....... Probably have really cluttered up my registry

with some incompatibilities. So I figured, I might as well start

"Maneuvering around" the "Learning Curve" for Linux.....

I have a couple of "Full Blown" Versions that I never installed properly.

More recently, I started researching the many "Distros" available.

Puppy sounded like one of the best!

Thanks for your offer for help. Goodday Mate! :)

Hi craftybytes,

I forgot to mention in the last post..........

I'm not sure if I'm ready for a "Dual Boot".

My understanding is that I would have to install

The Puppy on my hard drive.........

I am still running it from CD to become familiarized with it.

Thanks again. And Goodday Mate! :)

Hi PupSki,

No you don't really need to fully install Puppy to your hard drive - you can also install Puppy as a "frugal" install - search in these forums for 'frugal' - much info on how to do it and use it..

Yes it would probably be the best if you were to start a new thread for your modem setup probs - then those puppyites who could help you would find your thread quicker..

As your modem is a Lucent model - you might want to try the 'Modem Wizard" in the "setup" menu - hopefully this can get you on the way..

I believe our January is the same as your January - just 12 hours behind in actual time..

HTH..

Moving to Other Forums

#9 Post by PupSki »

Thanks to both craftybytes & keilor,

In further Browsing, I did find mention of the "frugal" install &

the "Modem Wizard". I just didn't have time yet to study them.

keilor was right, Where I grew up (up North) it was really cold

in January with the Molasses being very slow.......

It's just an "Idiomatic Expression" I grew up with.

Right now, I'm 'stuck' in Central Florida, USA

where it's waaay too warm in January, for me!

Oh, by the way, I'm 'Dave', definately a "HE".

Thanks again and Goodday to both of you! :)

Linux is far more difficult to exploit than windoz. Really you just need to manage your open ports with a firewall if you feel that you will have a security issue. The antivirus software is really a pointless install.

Anti Anything

Hi Mystic,

Yes, I knew that Linux is far more difficult to exploit than windoz.

I'm assuming the Firewall which comes with

Puppy Linux 2.15CE Final is adequate?

I have been using Zone Alarm Free with Windoz

because it is rated so highly and is Free.

I'm in the process of downloading "AVG Antivirus for Linux"

Thanks! :)

Whatever satisfies your need to tinker :)

I think these Linux AV scanners are great for scanning your Windows files from Linux. One advantage is that Windows is dormant and malware designed to hide itself while Windows is running loses that particular stealth ability.

Not interested in dual boot myself...to complicated & don even wanna bother figuring it out.

Thought running pup live cd save file to hard drive was safe on top of installed windows, but found out..not the case & easy to mess up winx..

Not that i'm a big fan, but got lotsa stuff there..

One step ata time for me now.
