no joy with gxine and 2.15 ce

#1 Post by freke »

I loaded 2.15 ce and found it brilliant at setting up printing emails and browsing, but I am having no joy with gxine it will not play cds, dvds or radio.
On other isos I could play both cds and dvds but radio would only play for 90 seconds.
Also alsa would never find my Audology2 zs sound card. I could only get audio from the motherboard.

We included xmms in 2.15CE so you could play CD's and radio. You may need the radio add-on from PSI though.

Don't know what the problem with DVDs might be, but I believe Dougal is working on an updated mplayer that will likely solve that problem. Gxine has been problematic for some time on some hardware.

Hope that helps.

These are the error messages I get when trying to play CDs DVDs and BBC radio it is the same whether I run xmms or not.
prior to 2.15 ce eveything played apart from BBC radio which always shut down after 90 seconds.
This is a 2.15 burnt to a DVD and not an upgrade from a previous iso.

I hardly think the missing icon is the problem. I'd say it's the problem with the xine-lib "Autoplay plugin".

You could try installing xine_lib_DEV-1.1.4 from the PETget manager, although I doubt that is responsible either. Maybe one of the real guru's can help. You might need to post your error as a bug at the developer's forum, though.

Hope that helps.

A full-featured dotpup of MPlayer has been available since last November -
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=13216

DVD playback is perfect ... if you ignore the fact that DVD menus are not displayed properly, which has always been a shortcoming of MPlayer. The developers are promising to fix this feature in the next release.

How stable is Mplayer and Puppy? I have had some experiences in the past (other distros) that Mplayer isn't very stable and found Xine the best for my purposes. Could be that it's the other way around in Puppy (I've read some more gxine related bugs)

please don't think I am trying to be smart I'm too old and slow thinking,
but following your post I tried to download the MPlayer but it was already installed, and prior to using 1.5 ce gxine played DVDs without a problem.

Hi,

we had really hard time the mplayer you are talking during the beta testing of my distro eXpand-Dofus edition (see here http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=17513 ) and if you could help me to check the mplayer in my distro and tell me what's wrong it would be very helpful.

The mplayer in my distro is working very well as long as i play video files or streams from internet, but i have problem at reading DVD disc. Hope you can help.

Best regards,
Laurent

Laurent,
MPlayer originally tried to include DVD read support statically with their "mpdvdkit" library, but it never worked properly.
So for basic DVD support, MPlayer needs the libdvdread library.
And to read encrypted DVD's, MPlayer needs the libdvdcss library.
Puppy contains both of these libraries. But if you need to add them, get them here -
http://www.dtek.chalmers.se/groups/dvd/downloads.shtml
http://download.videolan.org/pub/libdvdcss/1.2.9/

And for "half-working" DVD menu support, MPlayer needs the libdvdnav library. Get it here -
http://sourceforge.net/projects/dvd/
This library is a bit old, so it's maybe better to get the CVS code -

cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@dvd.cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/dvd login
CVS password: (press the Enter key)
cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@dvd.cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/dvd co -P libdvdnav

Then to compile MPlayer, include this -
--enable-dvdread --disable-mpdvdkit

The configuration script will automatically detect libdvdnav.

Of course, there are many other configuration options available. My MPlayer package specifically adds support for Digital TV tuner cards, for example.

Hi,

i already have them inside here follows the versions number and locations:

Code: Select all

/usr/lib/libdvdcss.so.2
/usr/lib/libdvdcss.so.2.0.8
/usr/lib/libdvdnav.la
/usr/lib/libdvdnav.so
/usr/lib/libdvdnav.so.4
/usr/lib/libdvdnav.so.4.1.0
/usr/lib/libdvdplay.so.0
/usr/lib/libdvdplay.so.0.0.1
/usr/lib/libdvdread.so.3
/usr/lib/libdvdread.so.3.2.0
perhaps it is not good versions ? or do i have to create symlinks for other places ? or did i do something wrong and something is missing ?

Best regards,
Laurent

today I burnt a virgin copy of 2.14 connected to the internet, ran gxine with bbc radio 4 it ran for the usual 90 seconds then shut down, I put in an old dvd it ran perfectly well and the same with an audio cd.

I think there is a bug in 2.15 ce
