boot from the CD
On shutdown accept the option to create a save_file on one of your hard disk partitions. This will not interfere with any other operating system on the disk.
When you boot with the CD puppy automatically looks for this save_file
Next time you boot puppy will find the save file and load your settings automatically.
simple

Gus, maybe you should tell us why you want to boot from a CD if you have installed Puppy to the hard disk drive? Is there a problem booting the hd install?
To answer your question directly, use the "puppy pfix=ram" boot option to boot the CD without accessing the hard disk drive. After the CD has booted into RAM, mount the partition where you have Puppy installed, and you should be able to modify, read and write there.

Thanks for your replies.
I'm trying to sort out a certain problem with booting ( http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... a47d635410 ) but in the mean time i wanted to boot into hda5 - where Puppy is.
I was thinking of maybe:
- Boot the computer.
- Insert the Puppy CD.
- Type option or command before the CD automatically launches the live mode. The command would be something along the lines of Puppy /dev/hda5.
pcdenton: None of my computers have a floppy drive.
Thanks. Got to go to work.

My comments still hold for a frugal/coexist install, or have you done a full/traditional type install?

I get it, you want to use the Puppy cd as a boot disk to your type 2 full install.
Answer is no, I dont think you can. However bootable floppy image can be burned to a bootable cd. http://www.troubleshooters.com/linux/fl ... _on_cd.htm
I for instance have found that a win98 boot floppy is handy to have around. I have floppy drive, BUT as webpage above points out, manufacturers of blank floppy disks anymore seem to think if one out of 5 or 6 work, thats fine. Not only do blank floppies cost more than blank cdr but also seem to not last as long as they used to and easy to find one corrupted after couple uses. I burned the win98 boot floppy image to cd, no more problem. It would be same with Puppy boot floppy, just burn the image to cdr.

At this point I'd refer you to man pages, but they often lack examples.
Here is a link with examples, hopefully enough you can do what you want.
http://dirk.eddelbuettel.com/quantian/h ... ogrub.html
It tells you to edit /etc/lilo.conf, but I didn't see where it says run 'lilo' after the changes, you must do that.
PS the page is not for Puppy, the examples are what I think should help you boot Puppy with Lilo

mouldy, you win the toaster! Wait for it in the mail. . . but i'm not responsible if it gets lost. . .
Bruce B: I did exactly the same thing in both, 2.14 and 2.16.1. The difference is that 2.14 gave me an error and 2.16.1 works. The steps are:
- Install Puppy to the partition
- Install GrUB to that partition
- Go to Vector and install LiLo
Thanks, all.
