what chance my printers will work with Puppy please? |
|
I realise before I ask that I might not be able to get a definite answer but can anyone hazard a guess as to whether my:
HP Deskjet 720C; or
Apollo P-1200
will work with Puppy please?
If anyone knows for sure that they won't work do you know what's the cheapest currently available printer that will definitely work please?
(I've had a quick "play" with Puppy and it looks really good but I won't be able to put the old PC I want to use it on together with either of the printers until after I've had to decide if Puppy really is the "one for me" so thanks in advance for ANY help.)

The printer install wizard in 1.0.1 doesn't list either of them, although most of the HP printers use the same driver.
Check out HPs website for Linux drivers, as they are the most 'open minded' of all the printer manufacturers.
Also, worth checking the Wiki for the compatible hardware pages. If you get yours working, don't forget to add them to the list.
Keep us informed !

EDIT . Using puppy as a Live CD means you can try it out on systems without comitting to a hard disk wipe. I still have all my windows stuff available to me, but I haven't even logged on to it for a month.
The best I can suggest is to try puppy with your printers - if you don't get any joy then shout up and we'll try and sort it

Note, I will be upgrading to the latest Gimp-print ijs-drivers soon -- that's what Puppy uses. Then we should have more printers covered.

Hi,
I followed the advice to check for drivers for my printers. I couldn't find any at HP but did find the following links:
http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Apollo-P-1200
http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=HP-DeskJet_720C
Will I be able to install the suggested pcl3 or pnm2ppa drivers in Puppy 1.0.1 please?
Thanks for the ongoing help...

Thanks for the tip about linuxprinting.org. Followed it to HP's website and eventually found that the 720c is not currently supported by HP's drivers. However, in turn the HP site pointed me to:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/pnm2ppa/
Which says:
"pnm2ppa is a Ghostscript print filter which allows owners of HP DeskJet 710C, 712C, 720C, 722C, 820Cse, 820Cxi, 1000Cse, or 1000Cxi printers to print PostScript Level 2."
As a newbie this is all a bit beyond me. Can anyone say if this will work with Puppy please?
Thanks again...
