Streamed avi player out of computer with 166 MHz cpu?

#1 Post by tuxster »

I would like to use an older system having a 166 MHz CPU with 256 MB RAM and 6.2 GB drive as a wireless networked Puppy box to play avi files transferred from another computer. I hope to connect an 802.11b Wireless LAN Adapter PCI and a video card with TV out, and play the files on my television. Does anyone feel the system is up to the task or would the results be disappointing? The box is a little sluggish now and I was wondering before I start scouting around for vid and net cards....

thanks for looking and tell everyone you know about Puppy!

well it appears to be very slow in playing an avi file on its own monitor so I guess I will scrap this notion until further thought....hmmmmm...

to make use of the hardware acceleration of the video card, you must use the Xorg X server (not xvesa, and not Xorg with the vesa driver) and gxine or mplayer must use the xv driver (not the x11 driver) ... otherwise the cpu is doing all the work that the video card would normally do, plus the work of playing the sound as well

166 MHz is a bit slow for playing movies
