Any interest in a "Google" Puppy

#1 Post by Rhino »

I'm just probing for some interest here, to see what others think...

There has been much talk about Google making a foray into OS's, but that has not materialized to date, however they have many high quality applications that fit somewhat into the Puppy philosophy of small and simple (some do not...ahem..Picasa). My thought is that if we could take a stripped down Puppy and then insert some web 2.0 applications, some Google apps, some not.

Benefits: If you have a web connection, you should get a super sweet puppy for basic needs. With the flexibility of Puppy it would be simple enough to add standalone apps if you wanted such as OO.org or Abiword, Gnumeric, etc.

Detriments: Not very useful if you don't have an internet connection ;-)

I sincerely doubt that we could call this Google Puppy for a couple of obvious reasons, so it would need a name that lets users know that it is making use of the web 2.0 applications.

I'm not sure if this would actually make a really small and functional Puppy or not since some of the web applications require Java, but maybe we could use one of the cut-down packages if that is all that is needed. I hope someone more knowledgeable than I could weigh in here on the technical aspects of making this version.

We could also possibly use some suggestions for possible application links to include. I have a few that I like, but I would like to hear what others think as well.

This could be a fun little community project that could generate some positive attention for the Puppy Community and expose new users to the wonderful experience of Puppy.

I'm interested in hearing everyone's thoughts!

applications

It's probably best to start listing the Web 2 applications that you referred to, so whatever is/are identified will dictate the requirements.

Thanks Raffy. Sorry about the slow response, I was on vacation. I'm sure there are many worthy candidates for inclusion and the list keeps growing every day. Of course web addresses can change, and that will always be a problem with this sort of distro.

I have successfully made an iso using unleashed, but it is only a little smaller than the base puppy. First time through, I didn't want to remove too much stuff.

I'm still customizing quite a bit, but the basic list is as follows:

Documents:
Google Docs & Spread
sPresent web-based presentations
Wikipedia encyclopedia
Flowchart.com create flowcharts
Medgle medical google mash-up

Calculate:
Billster arrange bills/budgeting
Google Finance

Personal:
Google Calendar

Internet:
Meebo Chat
Youtube
ICQ2Go
Google Talk
GMail
Google reader
Google Maps
Google Translation
Chatzilla preserves irc function with GAIM absent

Graphics:
Flickr online phot management
gCast podcast creator
Wiredness photo/image manipulation

Fun:
LineRider woohooo!
Neave games arcade (asteroids, frogger, tetris, etc)
Sudokular (soduku)

Multimedia:
jamglue (web-based audio track editor)
pandora radio (internet radio)
last.fm (internet radio)
tv-links.co.uk (tv and movies-need divx streaming to work well)

I also cleared the desktop of icons in favor of wbar. In the category of minor annoyances there is the mime-type problem, that when you click on a .doc file for instance, it will open to Google Docs, but won't open the file. Not that there is anything really wrong with that, just different than what we are used to doing.

I still have a bit of cleaning up to do before anything gets released so please let me know of any suggestions.

seems a superb idea - and radically different

:)

I might have suggested using Flock browser (a social browser) at one point
http://www.flock.com/

Be interested if you think suitable

Also as many of the features would be web links to online services
have you considered a 3 monthly update (much like EzPup) and using the import bookmarks facility in Seamonkey and other browsers?

The situation with creating another unleashed distro is the difference to the Puppy core, making continuance and support an issue . . .

You should also be aware that many on-line 'services' are a way of leasing software (long term goals for venture capital sponsored services)
That is why it is important to be flexible with updates and the offered services . . .
and open and free services (again long term) will arise to counter the scams. Microsoft is going online (surprise surprise) with its next OS. Why sell people an OS when you get them to pay every month . . .

you might find some extra links to services here :)
http://tmxxine.com/Wikka/wikka.php?wakk ... eResources

For now it sounds like fun :)
You are using substitution where an on line option exists (if I understand what you are doing) I very much look forward to what you produce.

I considered using Flock since I really like it quite a bit, but everytime I took out Seamonkey, gxine refused to work due to some shared dependencies that were removed. So what I did was pared things down just a little bit by removing Abiword, Gnumeric, Gaim, event planner, personal wiki and others like that, which really wasn't *that much* savings of space. So I'm left with and 89Mb iso that is nice and is fully functional, but not as small as I think a web-based distro should be.

I may try starting with micropuppy or ipup or one of the other tiny distros. I don't want to lose the video and audio playback that we have with Gxine though.

As far as the 3-month update cycle, I was thinking that it might be simpler to just make a Web2.0 dotpet section where you could add and remove these at your leisure and they would be put into your menu system. I love the xdg stuff...makes it so easy to add menu entries :-)

Seems like the right idea. I wonder why they are so large though. Webconverger is at 200Mb with somewhat limited functionality (no wifi, no printing, no hd install, and they want to charge for customized builds) Wow, Puppy is half the size and 2x the functionality with a whole host of local tools available.

I was wondering the same thing. He must be basing it on Knoppix Linux. Their are probably a lot of packages that he could get rid of

I think it was based on Debian. Either way, I've had trouble getting Debian to boot on my system. Maybe I should give a try just to check it out.

In other news related to this thread, I'm cleaning up menus and mime-type icons. No increase in size, but definilitely in appearance. I should still be able to come in under 90 Mb for this attempt. I may get crazy and try to go really small again, but I'm afraid I may not have enough skill to get it done properly. Even if I don't it will be a great learning experience!

I have used this Aussie Live CD.......... cl33n
Not as fast as Puppy...but pretty good.
Does not connect to Wireless yet?
But good at what it does and better than a few Bloaties out there.

http://cl33n.com/faq.html

" easy to use: cl33n automatically connects to the internet and opens the Firefox web browser.

How is cl33n made? Is it reliable?
cl33n is built using Debian Linux and Debian Live.
But now there are so many exciting web applications that you can do almost anything with cl33n! You can edit documents, send emails and instant messages, even use whole operating systems running inside your browser! Check out the resources page for more.

Why did you make cl33n?
I work one day a week for a charity-run community centre in Sydney, Australia. The community centre has an internet cafe with a severe virus and spyware problem. I was looking for a Linux Live CD that is very easy to use. I tried lots of great Live CDs that I thought would work out well at the centre. Unfortunately they didn't work out. Some were not compatible with the video cards in the centre's computers. Some were not intuitive enough for people who were beginner Windows-only users. Some were painfully slow on the centre's computers. Some would work great only if they were started up in a special way...and most of the time there was not a technical person around to help start up and reboot the computers there. I loved all the Live CDs that I tried but for one reason or another I couldn't use them at the centre. cl33n is designed to be minimalist, simple, fast and compatible. It just does web browsing- that's all."

You know an Ajax puppy wouldn't be a bad idea.

And they now even have an Ajax operating system too...

And its canajun, eh? What's not to love? :D
I could see Puppy running better than WebConverger on this net appliance or thin client.

Web apps

#17 Post by Vettephil »

Unfortunately, www.zoho.com offers a longer list of web apps than Google. :(

This might be a good place to start to offer folks a full range of choices in a single stop.

Looking forward to trying your project!
