How clever are you guys?! Any chance of locating a copy of Puppy on an MP3 player? Would it be possible to pick up an (separate? wakepup?) initial booting file without interfering with the native formatting, etc? Same questions apply to some of the newer mobile phones where a USB connection is used, although even the oldest provide some kind of (serial?) port for PC connection. Most mobiles use Linux (or Symbian) already. An all-purpose top pocket comms device should be feasible now that 1Gb and above is becoming the new standard?

Hah, good timing! I'm about to try this. My wifes 512mb mp3 player got stamped on so was unusable (smashed screen). It works natively as a usb stick though, so i'm planning to use it with a frugal install as my desktop os (with a grub that lets me boot a different os on a different drive if needed).
I'll let you know how it goes....

At least someone is reading the world news! I had hoped to get away for a family break, but we find ourselves bailing water, dusting off the canoes, and digging out the wellies. And that's just to get down to the shops for a loaf of bread! We are marooned. At least we have drinking water fit for drinking, unlike folks a few miles away. The capitalist b*st*rds were allowed to build all across the flood plains during the reign of the wicked witch. I suspect the developers and planners responsible for this shambles are sunning themselves in Greece!

I tried an MP3 player bother and found the software on it made it not work with the kernel.

Perhaps this is different now. I've also learned how to debug better. Perhaps I'll give it another shot too.

btw, there is software on the partition. make sure to back up the device before you try to puppy it. I think if you lose the software, they just tell you "tough luck".

Development still continues across the whole floodplain. If you happen to go to Gloucester - not recommended at this moment in time - you'll come across many such 'housing schemes' which are rapidly eroding the fertile greenbelt.
Gloucestershire has always had a reputation for it's rich lowland pasturage - permitting both an early crop of spring grass and resulting fatstock. This was very much a welcome bi-product of natural innundations; but, it was recognised as such!
Today, it is not taken into consideration. I shudder to think of the new developments around the outskirts of Gloucester. It was - and always has been - a flood plain. The ancient cider orchards were grubbed out to create small (and not so small) 'business developments', self-contained 'mews' and 'closes'. Where once the small meandering streams used to weave through the plain dissipating any stormwater, they have been straightened, bottle-necked and contained within concrete pipes. Water allowed to find it's own level always spreads; constrained, it floods! Knowing how the old catchment used to flood - and of how history has a way of repeating itself, I'm sure these new housing developments have fared extremely badly in the saturating downpours.

Thankfully, the lunar cycle is not yet 'full', otherwise with an incoming high tide filling the wide Severn estuary - and perhaps a south-westerly gale - things could have be even more dire. The river takes a dogleg, creating an ever-tightening bottleneck past Frampton-on-Severn and extends up beyond Stonebench and on into Gloucester.The surrounding area is one vast floodplain. Only a couple of years ago,I watched as the first bulldozers cut into the rich alluvial topsoil to create new housing estates. Years and years of cultivation laid bare; then, beneath that wonderful loam, gleaming alternate bands of blue-grey and rich maroon-pink clays laid down by previous ancient floods. Depending upon the tidal flow and the overall storms, the accumulated silt can be carried from as far away as the Welsh hills and the Malverns. It still happens out in the river, even today. Yet, developers don't stop and consider those facts. Money before thought!
The overwhelming misery for those affected cannot be put into just financial terms. It's the loss of possessions, those very small personal items, the memorable things like cherished photographs which cannot ever be replaced.

Me too! I spent most of my early formative years just mudlarking, fossicking, birdwatching, roaming, fishing - elvering - all along that estuary and surrounding Cotswold valley! Shades of Tom Sawyer! Happy days!

i have successfully installed puppy on my friends 1GB mp4 player without messing the players programs, mp3's and its file system.

If you are trying to place Puppy on an MP3 player, read the posts and follow the links posted above yours for Puppy on Portable VirtualBox. Very easy to do with absolutely no problems--copy, copy, click, click. Use the "easier way." Much more efficient although I noticed a slight decrease in speed.
