Getting better Nvidia and other card support

#1 Post by Lobster »

Came across this on Distrowatch from Barry
I'm one of the lead developers of Puppy. Testing of Xvesa is neglected these days, as Xorg works on all my hardware. So when a new version of Puppy is developed, I don't bother with testing Xvesa. The problem with Nvidia video chips has come up many times on the Puppy forum, so I'll look into putting some support built-in. ....someone will have to give me a Nvidia card for testing ;)
So if you have or buy two cards :)

I am pretty sure barry will need two kinds of Nvidia cards to test AGP 1-8x and PCI-express 1-16x as I they might be a little different as far as what modules are loaded both kinds can be had cheaply.
for example:
AGP>>

and PCI express>>

Barry must be hankerin' to try out beryl on a 8xxx series Nvidia card LOL. you can get cards for less but I would be better value to get one from the latest series and pay only a little more cash(25$ more) than for an older model.

@ Barry If you get a card make sure you get one with a decent memory bandwidth atleast 128 bit also the PCI-E card I listed is SLI capable so buy 2 and try it out (just an idea). could you make an alpha or beta release with compiz fusion just to test out the drivers :-) ?.

hope that is heplful sorry I can't buy you a card to test myself

There's no need for Barry to even have nVidia cards to fix that.

If a few nVidia owners would take five minutes to get me some info I could fix the xorgwizard to work with them -- the problem is that no-one bothers (I even posted a modified xorgwizard in the 2.17-beta thread, which was obviously ignored).

Does your cursor appear on startup but disappear after you logout, thus never showing again?

If it is something like that, try this:

go into xorg.conf
put this in the section labeled "Device"

Code: Select all

Option "HWCursor" "off"
put it at the bottom of the list of that section.

GeForce XFX 8600 GTS Extreme 256MB 128-bit GDDR3
LCD is a Samsung SyncMaster 226BW
Running Puppy from a 2G USB Kingston ReadyBoost Flash Drive

The Video card is detected and I am using this system now to write this.

But, it won't run at native resolution 1600x1050
I believe it is running at 1280x1024

Hope this helps.
