Microsoft plans telephone service
Microsoft is preparing to allow computer users to make a normal telephone call from their PC....Microsoft said it hoped to achieve this by the end of the year.

That sounds cool.
Does Puppy need to start planning it now?

Given Microsoft's unbroken record, this new service will be as exclusive, incompatible with anything not Microsoft, and proprietary as they can figure out how to make it. It will also be riddled with bugs and vulnerabilities.

The codec Teleo used for its service before it was bought by MS is developed by Gobal IP Sound, in other words the same as Skype and Google are using. It is the best there is and I'm sure they will continue using it. I am pretty sure we'll see reverse engineering and clones pretty quickly. And if it doesn't happen it won't be for the lack of effort...
