2.17 - lost modem and mouse

Just tried pup 2.17 on my acer laptop Aspire 1350. I use a Psion PCMCIA modem card...which worked well in 2.16.
How ever on bootup My mouse failed to work. I tried plugging the phone cable into the inbuilt modem port to see if 2.17 could find it but no modems were found. (Ok...no big deal my card modem would properly be quicker than a winmodem anyway.) But that wasn't found either...so no connecting.
Rebooted with pup 2.16 but still couldn't connect and the mouse failed too.
Rebooted using the 'pfix=clean' option which displayed a messageabout upgrading from 2.15...and both my modem and mouse work again.
...so its all working again....but not too sure about v2.17. If there is an explaination here somewhere as to what I should have done...sorry I missed it but will be thankful for any help if you could point me in the right direction..
