Pmount and MUT are also "flashing up and disappearing" -- so the problem appears to be systemic.

I know that I have sen this before but do not recall the fix.

Help?

This may be true, but it seems very strange to me that a kernel module would be necessary with XmBlackberry, especially since XmBlackberry does not create this module, and also that the module is somewhat experimental.

It's not necessary for XmBlackberry, but this is not for XmBlackberry. One of us should have started another thread, oh well. Edoc didn't have any luck with XmBlackberry, so I mentioned that I was using this kernel module to access the modem in my Blackberry. I'm using a script that inserts the blackberry.ko module and then runs wvdial. I have a 8703e with Verizon, don't know if this will work for edoc's setup.

I see that the barry-0.14 source code creates a udev file which may contain the necessary logic to create the device node.

No, the kernel module creates the device node. This is according to the ReadMe file that comes with it and I've exchanged emails with the author to fix a bug.

The address is actually:

/usr/share/blackberry/wvdial.conf

Instead of:

/usr/share/blackberry-modem/wvdial.conf

Yep, need to fix that.

Your dmesg output doesn't look promising and your lsmod doesn't even show berry_charge, which is the kernel module for blackberrys to increase USB power so that the battery will charge. That module is in the kernel, don't know if Barry included it though. I think your probably out of luck with this, but again, if you think something might be wrong with your Puppy, download Fatdog and boot up pfix=ram and try it.

Right now I have to fix a different problem - something I did broke the link between the wireless app and all of the Internet-dependent apps --
I am now on a 4.2.1 ISO boot.

Wireless runs and says OK as does DHCP but the apps don't see it.

Is there a somewhat simple way to restore the linkage in my Frugal 4.2.1 install?

I solved the problem with breaking my Internet connection -- see here:

Will return to the Blackberry challenge later ...

Anyone using XmBlackBerry successfully with Puppy 4.31?

Just tried it and it asks for a password for Blackberry access - I have not set a password according to what I saw in Tools - Security Options - General Settings the XmBlackBerry app flashes up a window too quickly to view then just disappears.

Is that an indication that the app is failing or ???

I can choose Mass Storage Device when the USB cable is newly plugged and can access the BlackBerry just fine - so the physical connection is not the problem.

WDYT?

Is anyone using this or a similar app to tether to any currently-available Verizon cellphone, a basic phone or a smartphone?

Is it possible that the BARRY app might work, if ported to Puppy?

I decided to switch to a simple cellphone temporarily so cannot test on mine.

Verizon could not get me a local number via my Alltel-firmware Blackberry so I had to change phones to get the number and decided to go simple (and less costly) for a little while.

I forwarded this to a friend who has tethering working under a MS version of windows and wants to get Linux working as well. Will report back when I hear from him.

Subject description: Tethered Modem

All,

I read through this thread with great excitement only to get to the end to find out it didn't have a happy ending. I use my Blackberry Pearl Flip for internet access from my Lenovo netbook from Windows. Has anyone cracked the code to get this done in Puppy? I'm travelling later this week and staying at a hotel that doesn't have free wi-fi. I'd like to get my tethered modem working from Puppy.

Thanks,
Patrick J

I have just compiled the "blackberry" kernel module for Puppy 5.1/5.2
and packaged it with kirk's modem connection script from earlier in this thread.

The kernel module was compiled from CVS source code from the XmBlackBerry homepage
