Importing From FireFox & Thunderbird to Mozilla

#1 Post by edoc »

I need to transfer my Thunderbird Address Book & saved mails & preferably filter settings to Mozilla mail on this laptop from my other laptop.

I also need to move settings and saved files over from Firefox on the other laptop.

I am presuming that Firefox and Thunderbird files, filters, settings will match Mozilla but that may not be the case.

The plan is to dump the contents of that laptop to an external HDD in a USB- connected case and to wipe the laptop hdd to prepare for a clean Puppy load.

Suggestions from someone familiar with the version of Mozilla in Puppy and compatibility with Firefox 1.0.6 and Thunderbird 0.8, please?

Thanks! doc

If I remember right, when you install Mozilla in Windows, and I presume Firefox and Thunderbird, it asks if you want to import that stuff from a list of possiblilities which includes OE and older versions of Mozilla. I think I have come across that wizard just poking around, but, again, that was in Windows.

I know that Firefox and Thunderbird do that in Linux and Windows, wasn't sure that the version of Mozilla Puppy is running would do so.

I backed up my other laptop to an external HDD via USB using:
cp -rfupv /home/homedirectory /media/usb-ProlificTechnologyInc-MassStorageDevice:0:0:0p1/laptop1/

I presume that is a 100% backup, including subdirectories and hidden directories -- can anyone confirm that I used the correct settings so as to not have missed anything and so as to keep everything accessible from Puppy?

OK, made some progress and hit some new roadblocks.

1. I discovered that the Thunderbird folders are hidden e.g. .thunderbird so rox needs to have Show Hidden toggled on to see them.

2. When I try to use the Import app in Mozilla the toolbar and left side of the popup window are off-screen and I cannot grab anything to move it back on screen. (I seem to recall this happening with one other app under Puppy on my IBM ThinkPad 600X in the past.) Help?

3. From what I could see of the Import popup there did not appear to be a Show Hidden option, but it may be on the off screen toolbar. Help?

It looks as though transferring what I need from the Suse laptop to Puppy should be no problem once I get past these anomalies.

SOLUTION: I have to remember to manually drag the prior window to the middle of the screen, then the next one does not paint partially off screen.

Now that I can see the whole window I still do not see any way to view hidden folders in Import.

I may as well continue my dummy-learns-Mozilla thread ...

I used rox to look at the hidden Thunderbird folder and copied over abook.mab (should have remembered that) and my Inboxes.

Cannot find the file for the Inbox folders.

Where might that be and what might that be called, please?

Found 'em (Thunderbird) and manually copied them over. Not sure how to merge two Inbox folders yet.

Message filters do not appear to transfer, will have to manually recreate them.

Still trying to find where Firefox hides stuff. Especially need my Bookmarks.
