WHICH Puppy derivatives?

#1 Post by scsijon »

Could someone with some knowledge please put a "sticky" at the top of the first page listing all the derivatives and what's so special (or why they were created)?
There are now a few of them and I (and i suspect quite a few others) have no idea what they are about.

thanks to the hardworking creators, but......

edit
PLEASE don't use this post as a request for "how do I fix this" or "this doesn't work".

I had thought it to be a place that those who have created derivatives can provide a simple 'i'm here and this is what is available in my version call' to the community of new users.

scsijon, I think that's a great idea. Maybe a Sticky at Advanced Topics » Puppy Derivatives, linking to darrelljon's PuppyLinux : Puplets wiki that HairyWill noted above would be sufficient. Anybody else have an opinion/vote on this?

I found a thread on this topic here: Variant and Package descriptions http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=13567

NO NEED TO SHOUT!

#7 Post by macadavy »

We hear you! :)
It's true not every unpaid, volunteer developer who's spent hundreds of hours creating and debugging a new Puplet is as thorough as TazOC with Lighthouse Puppy: http://www.lhpup.org/download.htm
Of course from the name GamePup and the simple list here: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=19738
you wouldn't have a clue what that variant was all about. TeenPup's worse, no list just a couple of desktop screenshots with a lot of appy-link icons - no way to know what's in TeenPup, right? http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=18537
I'll stop there 'cause I'm a hands-on kinda guy who, if I'm at all curious about a particular derivative of Puppy, simply downloads the .iso, burns a 50 cent bootable CD and boots it up and plays with it to see what's there. But perhaps that's too much like work for you?
You could drop the developer of the variant a polite note in the relevant thread asking them to post a list of the apps they've included/added or excluded/subtracted from the base Puppy distro that virtually all are based on.
If that fails I suggest you send them a kvetching note like the one you've posted above condemning their failure to spoon-feed you and DEMANDING AN IMMEDIATE FULL REFUND OF EVERY PENNY YOU PAID THEM FOR PUPPY! :x

macadavy,
Thank you for your support (not sure if LighthousePup deserves that much credit! I know other Puplets' creators/developers have worked very hard as well.) I should note this section did not have a sticky until recently, and that after reading and posting in this thread, I messaged a moderator requesting a sticky describing what derivatives are, where to get them, which is which, etc. and noted the excellent wiki page Darrelljon wrote. This thread was promptly made a sticky and I was messaged asking if that was okay and I thought it was fine.

So while I can't speak for scsijon, I think his point was that (prior to this sticky thread,) this here Puppy Derivatives section was a bit mysterious and easy to get lost in, especially for those new to Linux or Puppy. I agree with you, the all-caps WHICH is loud and maybe scsijon would be happy to make a little edit to his post, assuming this sticky is what he had in mind...

fat-free-pup 3.01 xorg 62MB

#9 Post by big_bass »

I can only explain what fat-free-pup is since I built it from packages with unleashed core 3.01 also no scripts have been changed you get the solid 3.01 base without the extra clutter

I have a new way of making fat-free 3.01 cutting edge

1.) I Installed xdelta now you can update fat-free with a small
patch in the future

2.)I made a SFS of all the pet packages I removed from 3.01
install back what you want without having to search package lists

one easy download advantage with the sfs file called "build_back3.01.sfs doesn't need to be loaded on boot just one click and all the packages are available to you as ".pets"
install what you want

expect to install the browser of your choice with pet-get *the built in program installer dillo is pre-installed . light and fast is the theme you decide what you want to add a lot or a little and when updated programs come out you don't need a full upgrade just use the new pets from the next version a more stable way of doing things

it is easy to add programs to puppylinux you can use the built-in pet get manager or use dotpups

What is not easy to do is remove programs that are already pre installed
the only way is build it one package at a time with puppy / unleashed (a lot of work)
well you dont have to do that work if you use fat-free-pup you have a working stripped
down version that will run with less ram and faster then the original version 3.01

thats the idea behind fat-free-pup I removed only the "extra" programs (removed the fat = "fat being other applications added that you may not need to the beautifully small puppy OS")

and fat-free-pup I will just say 'fat-free' is for ANYONE who already used puppylinux and can install programs with pet-get or dotpups

or use as a base and build your own special puppy project

Abject apology!

#10 Post by macadavy »

I apologize. I'm afraid scsijon's post caught me at my testy best (worst?).
Too often I've seen whiny posts in this and other GNU/Linux forums in which someone complains bitterly that they're not getting their money's worth with something they got free-for-nothing, and its evident they've not spent five minutes doing a little research and want someone to hold their hand and/or do it for them.
It seemed to me the poster hadn't bothered to check here: http://www.puppylinux.org/user/downloads.php?cat_id=1
or read the FAQ here: http://www.puppylinux.org/user/faq.php?cat_id=2
or the helpful (incredibly lonnng!) list of appys in the base Puppy here: http://www.puppylinux.org/user/readarti ... ticle_id=2
or the list of Puplets w/descriptions here: http://puppylinux.org/wikka/Puplets

That being said, I've never encountered a more friendly helpful forum (especially for newbies) than ours anywhere in the wild & wooly world of Free & Open Source Software (FOSS). I've asked some n00b-stupid questions myself and never (yet) been told to RTFM - though now I've mentioned it I'll probably get told!
Again, apologies for my sarcastic tone, scsijon!

Fire Hydrant

#11 Post by ttuuxxx »

Well Since the first time I downloaded puppy over 2+yrs ago i liked it and wouldn't install it, It looked too much like the windows 95, the 1.0 series, But every time a newer release would come out i would give it a shot.

Then one day someone added icewm to the mix of things and then i really started taking notice, Until one day 2.15ce came out and boom hit it me like a ton of bricks, time to convert 1 of my 3 window's pc's to Linux. (I also had tried over 40 other Linux distro's by that time.) I just loved the look and feel of it, and well i installed it to my multimedia pc that i use for watching movies on tv, Man what a surprise the tv-out work without any other drivers, with my AGP ati radeon 7200 video card.

Sadly I upgraded my multimedia pc to a am2 amd with a ATI pci-express with tv-out. Well lets just say no matter what i did, or who tried to help, Nothing, so i bought another pci-express video card made by Nvidia and still nothing, I also tried other linux distro's before that also to try to get it going.I went to NVIDIA, ATI and downloaded the lastest drivers etc and nothing, I went to the chat support at #XORG and nothing.

sadly I had to install windows again and it worked with both cards. But i had this feeling not to shoot my cards down on the table just yet.

Well i was liking puppy a lot at the time and from day one i always wanted to make my own derivative, I'm not bad with graphics, i have a well rounded knowledge of computers.

So a light bulb went on my head. Time to make your own derivative. Maybe it was a way for me to put some spark back into the whole puppy linux thing, My wife hated the idea, because all the time it would take and she wanted me to finish building the 5th bedroom, (I've been doing it on and off for over 3yrs,lol more off then on :) )

I knew Puppy 3.0 was coming out very soon and couldn't wait, Then I heard it was released,
Day 1: I downloaded it and went nuts, 20hrs the first day trying to figure out what i was going to make, different thing like graphics and multimedia, etc,
Day 2: I spent 19Hrs redoing what i did the previous day and started over again, Icewm was hard to get working at the right height 31pixels not 21 pixels. and the start menu button wouldn't change with the themes. What a pain.
Day 3: Another 19.5hrs by now my wife was right crazy at me, I just wanted it the way i envisioned it. It started looking and feeling like a replacement for 2.15ce and thats what i wanted. It ran like a charm, very fast, very stable, just right. I was really tired in the end, I ate in front of the pc, i went nowhere, my wife would say "We'll you get out of you hole already",lol I remastered it, tested it and released it And Fire Hydrant was born. After the first day I found out that a couple of default application shortcuts were broken so i quickly fixed it, I also heard that a PPoE flaw was found in 3.0 Puppy and that i had the same flaw, so i added that to the fix, and remastered it. I then released it. Not 10 mins after the second release was live i found 1 more broken short-cut. That really got me, so once again i fixed it and released it.

to bring this long story to a end this is what has been added to Fire Hydrant:
Firefox, flash, java, plus thunderbird, sunbird and lightning so you can get your mail and your calendar in one application. plus icewm, and 19 themes, a few new games in the firefox "tools" menu, xmms with a sony skin, Limewire, shutterbug, Gimpshop, Yahoo messenger, aMSN messenger, Flash for Linux(F4L), Galculator, and desktop icons, PPoE fix, etc a lot was added and no scripts removed. oh ya pidgin auto login to #puppy linux, and of course xgalaga. and firefox i added 2 skins and some games in the tools menu.

this is what was removed:
Sea Monkey, inkscape, abiword plugins, gtkfish, netsurf, gemgame, boehm-ge, bubble game, rubix cube, tkmines, ical, gnumeric

As long as people show interest in Fire Hydrant I'll keep this project up and going, I do have some real good idea's for future releases but, well have to wait and see :)

Its been a love hate thing.

Ps remember the pci-express problem? well once i loaded my Fire Hydrant up, I said to myself, i haven't tried puppy 3.0 or tv-out yet. but hey might as well give it a shot. switched the tv to AUX. s-video loaded Fire Hydrant generic drivers on boot and the screen came on.
Perfect picture , I was spell bound. I let out a big YESSSSS and deleted windows once again. LOL. funny, i was ready to leave puppy, because of this, and give up on Linux for a while, i made a derivative that really works well, and boom just like that, I'll give 100% anytime to make puppy a better operating system, my wife still thinks I'm nuts, but i know I'm just hooked on it.
Have fun and a nice day ttuuxxx :) www.ttuuxxx.com home of Fire Hydrant

ok, as the one who started this (and clearly ruffled a few feathers)

1- a new user who sees the title"puppy derivatives" I thought would find as FIRST document some form of index saying what is out there in the puppy community including what was so special about each that they needed to be created. This would let them see if one of the derivitives, rather than the base , is really what they want to download. It wasn't there!

2- as a puppy user who had a thought of a derivitive to suit a specific purpose, it would be nice to look first to see if there was already a derivitive version out there that would either do as is or with a few additions. Called "not reinventing the wheel"!

3- as a "left field thinker" you would want to try a different derivitive for a puppy version to see if an "idea" was worthwhile continuing in puppy, or if you had to change versions to get what you wanted. Where would you start but looking at what was already out there.

and I had looked elsewhere in the puppy forums, but having got lost between the various sites and looped between messages.... I decided to submit this post instead.

and I paid for my 2.16 from barry and will be sending him more money for 3 soon for the bugfixed version is out as downloading at 31K is no fun and if asked would be happy to double the cost as puppy is worth it.

you want "testy", I can be that but forums are for information exchange, not fights, remember others don't think the same way you do and a forum must be capable of handling thoughts and peoples perceptions from all directions, not just a blinkered few!

all I wanted was something that helped people looking at puppy to easily see if one of it's many faces would suit them or not rather than spend hours searching or giving up at an early stage from frustration.

I too have contributed to Puppy and will continue to support development financially and any other way I can.

I agree that some distros release notes are rubbish, for example, not explaining; their purpose, what packages are different from what they're based on, what their system requirements are, what size their ISO is, where to download it from, their desktop environment, any boot codes or passwords (such as GoblinX and Linux4all) etc.

Great distro discriptions

Thanks, Lobster & Darrelljon: this is the best list I've seen yet, with detailed mention of included apps, etc. that often is lacking elsewhere. Can we make it a sticky post right at the top after scsijon's question?
