blackpenguin: A game where it's penguin vs evil windows

#1 Post by muggins »

The Black Penguin Menaced by the Evil Window, but Pengu's smarter!
I thought i'd upload this game, in the interests of furthering sensible discussion of OS comparisons. It needs QT 3.3.6 installed to work. To play, type blackpenguin, or click on /usr/bin/blackpenguin. (N.B. it is a bit slow starting up).

I will check it out and let you know my thoughts. Looks intriguing. I'm always up for a good distraction when I need a break from homework and ps2 games aren't always fun.

Probably ten minutes and a quick google search for an icon later:

Ok, so it only took a few minutes to evaluate. I say it should be included in the next version of Puppy. I am so tired of gtkfish anyway. A guy can only beat that so many times before it gets sickening. This, however, has potential and it is so similiar to Q-bert, its actually cute. I like it.

i don't think it's inclusion in puppy default is a possibility, when you think of barry's fight to optimise the quality of pup's apps, while keeping minimal size. the executable for gtkfish is 79kbytes vs blackpenguin's .pet size of 290kbytes, plus it's need to have qt-3.3.6 libraries included.

absolutely infuriating, thank you!

I already had qt 4.3.1 installed from here
http://dotpups.de/dotpups/Multimedia/lastfm-1.3/
so I hoped I wouldn't need 3.3.6 as well but I got

Code: Select all

# blackpenguin
blackpenguin: error while loading shared libraries: libqt-mt.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
after installing 3.3.6 it ran fine
I had a look inside both packages and they seem to provide completely differently libraries

hairywill,

i'm not sure if you could have gotten it to work w/o qt-3.3.6. i've only got qt-3.3.6, and it complained about missing libqt-base-mt.so.3, which i resolved by just symlinking with libqt-mt.so.3.

you would need to do, remove qt-3.3.6, then:

Code: Select all

upx -d blackpenguin
ldd blackpenguin
,

and maybe symlink libqt-base-mt.so.3 to whatever the equivalent is with qt-4.3.1, to ascertain if you can do without it.

KF6SNJ ,

you deserve a medal!
A guy can only beat that so many times before it gets sickening.
i don't even know how to play the blasted thing!

but i think you've raised a worthwhile project for puppists to contribute their opinions. a brainstorm on possible replacement games for the current ones, with the emphasis on tiny size & fun. what do you think?

http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=353
posted by bruce in topic no. 353 (way back)
its only 30K compressed
tetris is extremely popular
you can even player multiplayer over a network

I can feel a net-games or lan-party.sfs emerging
xtris
bzflag
battle for wesnoth
armagetron
openttd (Transport Tycoon)
some board games
a first person shooter with relatively low system requirements
