UPDATE: 10-14-2007

I have managed to build the menu so it matches base Puppy. Still working on getting the icons to "import".

May I know the correct steps to use/install the XFCE-4.4.1.sfs?
I am new to puppy/linux. I have searched the forum for a while, but can't find out how to do that.

siriusw,

Sorry for the scattering of this post, its kind of a work in progress Smile My intent is to repackage (with the included additions) the SFS and probably create a PET file also. To get you going now, here's what you need to do.

-Download XFCE-4.4.1.SFS and move to /mnt/home (in the case of a frugal install).
-Reboot computer.
-After rebooting, open the file /root/.xinitrc (this is a hidden file) with your preferred text editor, and comment out (put a # in front of) the line...

rox -p /root/Choices/ROX-Filer/PuppyPin

so it looks like this....
#rox -p /root/Choices/ROX-Filer/PuppyPin

-Save and close the file
-Exit to prompt
-run the command "xwin startxfce4" (no quotes)
-Download and install the two patches from the first post of this thread

xfce4menu_for_puppy.pet
xfcemenuicons.pet

Note: Using Thunar right click on the pet, select "Open with other application", and use petget to open the pet files.

JB4x4,

Thanks for the quick reply.
My case is Full HD install.
I followed ur steps but after key in the command xwin startxfce4, the jwm still show up, but with a blank black desktop.
I think the steps should be different for Full HD install, right?

I did the same steps , the xfce appears only with the task bar , no icons and no panel, although the settings menu show that it's there. Anyone with the same problem?

The SFS file format is to be used with a "Frugal" install. There are ways to mount and copy the files for a full hard drive install, but you will have to do a little forum searching on that one, as I am not certain of the process. I should be able to create a PET package (hopefully in the next few days) along with a cleaned up version of the SFS that will be full hd install compatible.

does the sfs use lzma compression? that would probably make it a good bit smaller but slower on older machines. is lzma even in puppy 3?

Just standard compression (no lzma). I'm not sure if Puppy currently supports lzma, as it was found that the extra size of the standard was a better trade for speed.

On the commandline:
Code:
mount XFCE-4.4.1.sfs /mnt/data -o loop
cp -r /mnt/data/* /
sync
umount /mnt/data

In Puppy 3.00 (and maybe 2.17, not sure) you can simply click a .sfs file to mount it, so you could just click it, copy the contents to /, and just click yes over and over for ten minutes as it asks if you want to merge directories.

Or, to mix and match methods, click the .sfs file to mount it, then open a terminal there (press the backquotes/tilde key), and do this:
cp -r ./* /
sync

If you mount it by clicking, you can also unmount it by clicking that same .sfs file.
