Font size in this forum

#1 Post by BarryK »

Running Mozilla with a pristine 1.0.5rc+, the fonts in the forum are too small.

At least on my screen, 15 inch screen and it is only running at 800x600.

The problem is, using "-dpi 100" for the X server increases the menu and dialog fonts in Moz, but no effect on the forum font size.

So, I went into Edit -> Preferences -> Appearance -> Fonts

and changed the minimum font size to 14. (previously it was "none")
That makes the fonts a good size.

But, 14, I presume that is "points", seems an awfully large setting.

Has anyone played with the various settings, and got a good balance?
I can change the default of the live-cd for a better initial experience for
newcomers, so they don't have to fiddle trying to get it right.

Whatever is the setting in 1.0.4 works OK for me.. I am using 1280x1024 on a 17" flat screen. In fact the main reason I am using 1.0.4 and not 1.0.5rc is the fonts n the browser were too small and serif (fonts with bits on them) rather than plain san serif fonts (yep I tried changing briefly - wasn't easy enough so went back to 1.0.5) I am such a woos! [slang: purile and pathetic - a sort of generic Windows user]

Incidently I was all set to start using Opera - no Flash? - oh boy - not as easy as it should be to install last few times I tried - not good. Then I found my favourite add on stubleupon.com is not available in Opera. Plus the edit icons do not appear in the wakka wiki . . .

However Opera is twice as fast as Mozilla (2 seconds to load and go to Puppy web page) and you can have two pages IN the browser - open - not just tabbed.

So Opera is great but I am sticking with Open Sauce (or source) and the Puppy default browser which has grown on me - though I agree with G2 it is kludgy compared to Firefox. The new version of Mozilla in 1.0.5rc certainly feels cleaner. Despite the fact that Sylpheed is so fast you can barely believe it - i still use Mozillas email prog - built in. This is really due to spam handling which I found integrated simply in Mozilla. Maybe it is time to look at Sylpheed again in 1.0.5 . . . m m m m . . .

1.0.5's Mozilla default font settings were too small for me (I don't recall that being the case with 1.0.4.) I tinkered with them (Edit -> Preferences -> Appearance -> Fonts) and 14 (whatever the units are) seemed about right to me at 800 x 600 resolution. My display is a 15" LCD.

i tend to work in 1 maximized window at a time, and i prefer larger fonts

i use the dpi option, and i set my browser fonts minimum size to about 14 or 16 ... i also symlink /root/.fonts to /mnt/home/windows/fonts so i can use all the Windows antialiased fonts ... i usually set my default browser font to Verdana

I have 15 inch screen and 1024 x 768 dpi display resolution.

Mozilla
Edit -> Preferences -> Appearance -> Fonts

Fonts for: Central European
Proportional: Sans Serif, Size:13
Serif: Times
Sans-serif: Helvetica
Cursive: serif
Fantasy: serif
Monospace: courier:13
Minimum font size: 13
Allow documents to use other fonts: enabled
Display resolution: 72 dpi

From my experience, it is important to enable 'Allow documents to use other fonts'.
