JWM Themes Exchange
Re: JWM Themes Exchange
After Dingo (no modem support) and two days trying to get NOP410 functional on my system , it doesn't seems to work, so I decided to Install the Puppy 411, the only Puppy Distro seems to be stable and support my needs. The only disadvantage I don't like the Desktop, I like the minimalism style.WhoDo wrote:After I created the IceWM Themes Exchange, the occasional poster was moved to ask "Where is the JWM Themes Exchange?" In answer to that, and on account of some new JWM themes being posted by cb88 and others, I have created this thread for JWM devotees.
To get the ball rolling, I have taken a JWM theme created by Tom at the JWM developer forum, and given it the WhoDo treatment. Here is a screenshot of the result. Remember, this is JWM!
Caution! These will overwrite your .jwmrctray and themeslist files, so remember to make a backup copy first if you have altered them.
I tried to install the theme above because the consistency in icons and it seems the maximum I can get using JWM. But maybe I don't understand it, but there is nearly no change when I install it. What I'm doing wrong? Or is there someone who can help me where I find a professional theme and how to install it, like by example gnome on my SuSE system, even better with 3D Desktop..
Thanks in advanced.
That looks really nice!! Maybe you could release a pet for that tweaked JWM that installs next to the normal JWM so you could choose xwin jwm/xwin jwm-pimped or something, but that would use the same configuration/themes? Maybe asking too much there. Other than that, what gtk theme are you using?maximegb wrote:Minimalist, as I like.
(I've tweaked the source code of jwm to remove the frames around the tasks in the taskbar.)

Dang but the screenies look dim in win32 (but no choice as I still only have a winmodem .. sigh).
Here's a link to a screenie (285 K) of how my jwm theme fangdark looks on Wolf Pup's White Fang 0.2 puplet. Not sure if I can attach the theme, but we'll see - kind of new on this forum, eh(; - no visual aids to go with the basic files, just extract/plunk`em in /root/.jwm/themes dir and add to the themeslist there so's you can choose it via the basic jwm interface. I use a couple icons from Everaldo's crystal set if I recall correctly (32x32 seems to work comfy for me and I like to give credit due). If you want the resize+ of Wolf Pup's close_enough.jpeg background that I used on my 1024x768 display, here's another link - oddly enough it's a larger filesize even though it's smaller dimension-wise (not crazy about .jpgs in general, but this one seems to work nicely enough). Rollin' dem bones now, boss ..
.. oya, tiny extra for my fellow n00Bs (bothersome having a non-contrasty xload background), so that's "-bg navy" for the sailors towards the end of .jwmrc-tray
add an 'update' for compatibility with newer 4.1

I'll be darned, versions are different so here's an update for the new way of jwm (this pretty much looks the same, just took a bit of twisting my head to the terms relative to make it go in P41 and whatever else uses the newer approach). Even tried it on a 640x480 display for funs ( full-size screenie here ). Things get cramped in a hurry when you're used to a 'reasonable' desktop .. and hardly anyone I know thinks beyond the frame by pan, zoom or virtual (unless they do it regularly). Maybe someday I'll get advanced enough to comprehend how a gtk theme works .. anything's possible (;
.. mhm, creos00t ..
For those who have tried my other jwm mods, a little of the same and a bit else - along the lines of the aqua persuasion this time (sometimes called turqoise after the stone that is often but not always of that coloration). Perhaps some day I shall do a .pet - but extraction is a small hands-on experience. Only tested in P410, 411 and 412 .. simple instructions included. screenie here

Here's the theme I'm currently using, it was automatically created using apply current gtk theme button when using the stardust theme. I just sort of made it into a proper theme with pics for the chooser. Just get the theme and decompress into ~/.jwm/themes.

The background Image I'm using is right here:
Just save into /usr/share/backgrounds and use the wallpaper setter to tile.

Re: JWM Themes Exchange
The JWM theme only changes the task bar and window surrounds. To get icons, desktop background, etc., you need EZpup in the appropriate version for your Puppy - in your case EZpup-4.0 will do.hendrikus wrote:I tried to install the theme above because the consistency in icons and it seems the maximum I can get using JWM. The icons in the screen shot are part of EZpup-2.17R, which is NOT compatible with your Puppy. They are, however, available as a part of the SuperGPL Icon Pack at dotpups.de
Hope that helps.

I need a little help please. I am getting on great with setting up a Jwm theme, and have got the colours for windows and menus working well, but I am having a hard time finding the config files for the colours INSIDE the windows. things like the drop-down menus etc. Could someone point me in the right direction please, or is it not possible?

Generally application presentation in puppy is controlled by gtk settings
look in /usr/share/themes and tunnel down to the gtkrc files. The stardust one is probably a good place to start.
Edit this then select it using the gtk theme chooser on the desktop menu.

Thanks man. Naturally I screwed it up and had to do a re-install, but I got it now.HairyWill wrote:Generally application presentation in puppy is controlled by gtk settings

Ubuntu Human Theme
First of all I am new here and I love Puppy
I am also a Linux n00b and my English isnt perfect.
I made a JWM theme that looks like Ubuntu.
I am sorry but I dont understand how the colors file works. Can somebody explain?
And last but no least: can somebody take the GTK theme from Ubuntu and make it useable for Puppy? Is this possible?

No apology needed - the colors file simply states a few items for /usr/local/jwmconfig2/theme-switcher script to work with in the newer jwm. The only one that confused me was the PAGER_BG since it didn't really relate (for me) to the virtual desktop background color on the taskbar (either active or passive). Actually that particular value seems to control the xload background (for me) so I no longer have to keep fiddling with jwmrc_tray when switching jwm themes to get a contrasty backgound for the red foreground.
hmm, there's a nice gtk elsewhere in this forum .. ahh, this page, see myubuntu-gtk2 and ongoing development for P42 ..
arrrgh .. it may not work properly in newer pups!

Actually... I did see a hack that someone had done (LOL on the "done/Dunn joke above!) Will & DaveS that gave JWM some nicely rounded corners. But do you think I could recall to save my life just where I saw it?!
I can't even remember whether it was a hack the person had done to JWM (would sound most logical seeing that it's what is drawing the window, right?) or if it was a combo of the "hack + gtk2 engine", or the "gtk2 engine" alone. Seems so the bloke was really excited over it---as well he should've been!
I'm wondering whether it was the VectorLinux forum (as they've become quite involved with JWM now), or one of the off-shoots of PCLOS...?
Dang! This is one of those things you lose sleep over too until you remember it, like trying to recall a name, you know? -sigh-

(P/s: I meant to add as well: That's one VERY attractive UbuntuLook theme for JWM! Now if you add the gtk2-engine "UbuntuLook.so" and then the "Human" theme, then find the "Human Icon Set", and use the "ChTheme GTK Theme Chooser" under "Desktop"... all your gtk2-based apps will take on that look, and if you set the "gtkrc.mine" for the icons they'll pick those up as well. More or less. I do this sort of stuff all the time. It's easier for me to do than it is to describe/explain how because of how my brain works. Sorry!)

Hi. I am using the JWM tray like a launcher with a number of often used apps assigned to buttons. Does anyone know if it is possible to remove the border from these buttons so the icons appear freestanding, which I think would look much less clunky (IMHO) please? I dont think anyone has tried this here from what I read.....................

Yah, that should be a dohickey you can do - wbar is very nice for a launcher (transparency is very easy as well as it can be used in almost any wm without much fuss) and the 'new' top-tray jwm on P42 is another winner .. sometimes it's handy to have a drop target if you're sloppy like me ;
 , now I can't get the song out of my head .. "Gonna wind it up dadada dadadah DTO .. ah wah wahhhh a lil' Dto ah wah wahhhh a lil' dto ..."

(note - it's nice to have most all the goodies from the P42 art thread for this lil' extra mod to wind it up, blow it out shut it down . . . but it'll be oki without, just not as fancy) yo' check a snap o' the whip here and drive safely
