Phoenix CE - Browser Customizations and Links

#1 Post by ecomoney »

Hello All

Im starting this thread to see what suggestions people have for customizing the Browser in the upcoming release. The browser is probably the most important and most used application in any modern operating system at home. The current Seamonkey is only a base install, it includes no links or themes.

Ecopup (the puppy varient, or should I say setup) that I use at the cybercafe I run, and on all of the computers I set up for people in the area (about 100 and counting) uses links that are already built in. I get a lot of good feedback about this because it gives new users a starting point of where to learn about linux and open source, and also makes it convenient for them to find many common and useful websites.

What websites (apart from puppy ones) should be included in the default TS-3.03ce? Which sites would give a good introduction to linux and puppy?

Here are the bookmarks used in Ecopup...theyre in html format so they should just open in your webbrowser whne you download them. There is one addition that I am DEFINITELY going to make and that is http://media-convert.com/, which will convert just about any file to any format.

Just a few suggestions. The first one is a definite should have.

http://wellminded.com/puppy/pupsearch.html

http://www.google.com/linux

http://www.puppy-linux.info/

http://www.reallylinux.com/docs/consult.shtml

http://www.tldp.org/index.html

http://www.linuxchix.org/ (not just for the Ladies )

http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages

http://packages.slackware.it/

I would also sugest the "adblock" and "no-script" plug-ins for whichever browser is used (I assume it will be Firefox although I personally prefer Seamonkey )

Hi there, just to clarify, after a lot of discussion we will be sticking with seamonkey (maybe a more recent version) with the next C.E. . 2.15 had a great add on .sfs with Java and Firefox to boost browsing, and I hope someone makes one available for his, as well as a version with Opera (there was a lot of demand).

These are some great links that have been posted, lobster your site was a mine of great sites! Billwho, those sites will definetly make it in. Keep them coming :-)

I made this today:
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=23370
It's a search-plugin for firefox's search bar, to use the google-based Puppy search linked above:
http://wellminded.com/puppy/pupsearch.html

I don't know if it can be set up to work with Seamonkey though.

I find that the "normal" google works better thant the /linux one... try typing "busybox" in both and see what you get.
The /linux one tends to find a lot of mailing list posts etc...

Mouse gestures really speeds up surfing
Foxmarks, sync bookmarks between PC's

Cheers

I see what you mean Dougal. but there have been times when I was chasing applications that the Linux Google actually narrowed the field. So I keep both in my bookmarks

Here is the latest default web page for when Talking Stick opens - remember this will be be included and will load without a web connection (but the Youtube video will not be available unless online)
I have put it on line

http://tmxxine.com/tsweb/

I have separated the bookmarks and this links from the front page
'Hot links' This is very crude and includes specialized links. If someone wants to improve/tidy up that would be great . . .
:)

"view as source" from the browser as I am sure you know . . .

Problem.... that video is out of date....
murga.org/~ is now www.murga_linux.com/puppy
and shouldn't the booting video be of puppy linux 3.02? or 3.03 alpha? preferablely without an enhncements like ezpup... of course those could be shown later in the updated video

Hi Lobster, the Mouse gestures program I was suggesting includes picture zoom with dragging of mouse (I use right mouse but it is very configurable)
I can also go, forwards, back, new page etc etc all from mouse gestures and you can add your own as well (Never needed to myself)
Have fun!

Well it is up to Robert which he decides (based on advisement) but if mouse gestures has zooming (maybe with a page of tuition) it would be the better option . . . :)

Start page

#17 Post by ecomoney »

I have been experimenting with linux mint on a few of the newer machines (just to see what the rest of the linux world is on with...I havnt really tried much apart from puppy). They have a custom default start page online, which includes a basic google search, but also many other useful things as well, inluding the latest community news and links to the Linux Mint websites and support forums.

I think this would be a good choice for puppy because it allows users to keep informed on the latest news and links to the support community on a start page that they can use every day as it includes a google search.

While I love LinuxMint (I came across it during the Cassandra Beta phase) it requires too recent a kernel for the older machines I'm having troubles with getting to run Puppy later than 2.11

The most recent Ubuntu (which Mint is based on of course) that will run on those older computers seems to be 5.10

when it comes to linux mint, Lets just say I have 3 favorite Linux distros's
1st Puppy
2nd&3rd tied Myah os & Linux Mint both about the same size around 700MB and both just work excellent :) I can run the larger dvd distro's. But why would you if your happy with 700MB or less. I've been using Myah for almost 3years and Linux Mint for about 2 years.
