really tiny barebones puppy

#1 Post by JaDy »

Trying to run Puppy on a really old 24MB IBM ThinkPad 560.
Combined technology from WiZard and BruceB and the barebones104. Getting close, as far as (obviously had to key this in on my desktop from the ThinkPad screen), last several lines:

Code: Select all

. . .
RAMDISK: Compressed image found at block 0
Freeing initrd memory: 6200k freed
VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem) readonly.
Freeing unused kernel memory: 132k freed
3: Segmentation fault
                                                                      done
__alloc_pages: 0-order allocation failed (gfp=0x1d2/0)
__alloc_pages: 0-order allocation failed (gfp=0x1d2/0)
VM: killing process cp
Killed
And that's all she wrote.
So, I'm wondering if I'm really getting close or just being silly.
I'm thinking I need a really tiny barebones puppy.
Or, does the above indicate something else is wrong?

I have a Toshiba T200 pentop computer I was going to run VNC on. It's a 486/40, 12M -- currently it's running Windows 3.1!

Puppy would be better though. I'll try it and see what happens.

Or, probably I'll boot Puppy through the QEMU emulator and tune it until it works...

A segfault freeing up memory?
Is all that memory working properly? Can the computer run anything else?

Memory tests fine. The old ThinkPad runs Windows 95.

Does the Laptop have free memory slot and do you know what type memory! I have 16meg IBM (old laptop) memory that you can have! Any have old laptop HD(500meg or larger - it's puppy don't need a large one) that they are willing to part with? I have an old compaq that I bumped up to 64meg then the HD failed (was going to use for a puppy demo unit).
