IMO XMMS is a must it plays music with much better resource useage than gxine (not sure about mplayer performance)

So is it in or out?

and if it is in what plugins are needed i think the visualizations can go...
and the included plugins are not so good remove them and add so better ones like for more formats

I use xmms with ecopup and I agree its a lot better mp3 player. The thing is gxine plays mp3's and video's so there is no overlap in functionality and extra size.

I know Mark (MU) has elected to use mplayer in his 3.01 based muppy setup. Would this do a better job than gxine. I know its a standard part of geexbox which runs on really old hardware. Does it play mp3's as well, and can the user interface be made more useable, as its not very intuitive on how it works for the windows refugees.

Mmmm... mplayer, please? Yes it plays mp3's, videos and it's very stable. It also has a selection of skins, just like xmms, and one of them looks just like your home DVD player - is that a plus or a minus?

Gxine, MPlayer, and VLC are all large applications designed mainly for video playback. They're really overkill for audio playback, but if size is an issue then it's hard to justify installing XMMS as well.

A smaller audio application is lamip, which has been packaged with a very basic gui called xhippo here -

lamip supports many different audio formats, but if you only need to play mp3, there is a commandline mp3 player already in Puppy, madplay.
And xhippo is available by itself (without lamip) preconfigured to play MP3 files using madplay.

XMMS all the way for mp3's hands down is the best on puppy. Case closed!!! Movies on the other hand is another format. Gxine is 100% crap on stick. Xine-Gui works excellent but as barry posted out the default fonts are bad, I just think they are way too small. But this has nothing to do with the actually movie playing capabilities. So I would choose Xine-gui. VLC is a great player for out of the box live video streams, It even plays Microsoft streams which is good for Canadian News I like to watch. VLC is a great backup, Not as refined as Xine-gui video quality but has the "Just works" attitude when others fail!
M-Player now that won #1 video player for linux for a couple of years now, BUTTTTTT I just don't really like the interface, Even skinned it feels cheap. But once again it does work very well for playing videos, and really out of importance for a video player. So may i suggest maybe work it out on scale of importance, I started one which I normally use to figure out which one I like the most. To tell you the truth I would use xine-gui and use all the codec's from all the other Video players including realplayer,VLC. That way you would have 1 player that would really out-power all others and basically win hands down, Plus if you look at xine-gui and how many spin-offs are made after it? like 20 other video-players. Must be a reason, Mplayer just doesn't have the following and when you don't have that, most of the time you just don't accelerates as quick. Anyways have fun Or do like i do, Just have XMMS for Audio playback, and another Of your choosing other than Gxine grrrrrr. (Gives me shivers just thinking of it) lol
