@Flash @zigbert
Okay. I did the following:

- downloaded the "slacko-5.5.70-SCSI.iso" from the link zigbert posted
- burned the ISO with "burniso2cd" to a CD-RW
- bootet the computer with the CD-RW
- when slacko finsihed loading, I startet PBurn (Version 4.0.2) and repeated the same steps that I did in Precise.
(that means: burning two puppy-save files (that are clearly not in use) to DVD-R)

Result: The same error occured that occured in Precise. I post the new LOG-file here. Interesting that erasing and creating a CD-RW with burniso2cd was successfull with the drive in question.

Hi Omega,

Kindly advise if my understanding is correct - that you want to copy 2 x 512 MB save files from another drive (one from Puppy Precise 5.4.3, the other from Puppy Precise 5.6.1) to a DVD-R.

As you have a DVD-RW can you (as a test) put them both on that?

Then, if you can, and if that is close to what you want - (or even if thats fails) - exactly how would you anticipate using those files in future?

My regards

@Jasper: Yes, I want to make backups of my save-files to a DVD-R. If I accidentaly lose my savefiles I can copy them back from the DVD to the harddisk. That's all. -- Unfortunately I cannot test putting the files to a DVD because that is exactly what fails.

This would have been a better test if you had burned the ISO to a DVD.

@rcrsn51: Yes, but that would mean that I would loose a precious DVD-R. I used a CD-RW because I can erase it afterwards. I am very frugal.

The DVDs are likely not the problem because I use the same brand on another PC and with my DVD recorder all the time.

Hi Omega,

You wrote you could not copy to a DVD-R, but I asked (for a reason) if you can copy to your DVD-RW.

Do you have a USB2 slot and a flash stick? I ask because copying your save files to a CD or DVD will be slow and if you do another backup tomorrow (or whenever) it's another 1024MB every time.

Else, you could make separate folders on your Hard Drive copy to them and then rename your save files adding the date the originals were made.

@Jasper: I don't have any CD-RWs and I only have a 1GB memory stick that could only store a single save-file (my save-files are 512MB). On a multisession DVD-R, on the other hand, I could store at least 8 save-files.

@rcrsn51: Huh? You want to suggest something?

Edit: Sorry, I meant "I don't have any DVD-RWs"...

Hi Omega,

My apolpgy - I now see you used a CD-RW.

I suspect you could get a reasonably fast 16 GB flash stick delivered for less than €10.

I totally agree with the importance you place on a backup strategy - so good luck with the cost.

My regards

Buying an USB stick would be an alternative. I take this into consideration.

But it would really interest me why PBurn thinks that the "media is not formatted or unsupported" when I try to burn a DVD-R. It seems that PBurn can only handle CD-R and CD-RW media on my computer.

Since I don't want to use a couple of DVD-Rs for testing purposes the best way is probably what Jasper suggested. Or using one CD-R(W) for each Puppy version.

Yes, it would! The first thing I would test is if pBurn works for iso-burning as burniso2cd. - Both are built around the same code.
Since I don't want to use a couple of DVD-Rs for testing
Will be hard to find the source of the trouble...

there is an attribute for test-burning. - not actually burn, but simulate the process. This option is not set in the pBurn gui, but has to be set manually in the 'Advanced' tab in the Burn option window.

Code: Select all

-use-the-force-luke=dummy

What strikes my mind, is that the DVD-R disc might be initialized by another burner app. To get multisession burning work properly it is important to use the same settings for every burn-session. The easiest way is to use the same burner-app for one unique disc.
This is a known issue with burning in general. - not related to pBurn.

I tried the simulation but I can't get it to work.

I clicked on the "advanced" tab and activated "allow manual editing".

There's a long command line which can be editet:

growisofs -use-the-force-luke=dummy notray -Z /dev/sr0 -f -iso-level 3 -D -R -J -joliet-long -V \"pburn_project\" -p root -publisher \"Pburn\" -exclude-list /root/.pburn/tmp/exclude -graft-points -path-list=/root/.pburn/tmp/graft_points

I inserted the "dummy" directly after the = but it doesn't work.
How should the command line look like when done correctly?

I did two tests (with a fresh DVD-R in the drive):

with burniso2cd
I tried to burn an ISO-file with burniso2cd. This fails with no messages. The DVD drive does nothing and the program asks if it should verify the disc. No data is written on the DVD.

with PBurn
I tried to burn the same ISO with (and without) the "dummy" option. This fails too.

When I use the dummy-option, the log file looks like this:

Code: Select all

Pburn version 3.7.18

###################################################
   COMMAND:
###################################################

growisofs -use-the-force-luke=dummy -use-the-force-luke=notray -Z /dev/sr0="/mnt/home/slacko-5.5.70-SCSI.iso"

###################################################
   OUTPUT:
###################################################
Executing 'builtin_dd if=/mnt/home/slacko-5.5.70-SCSI.iso of=/dev/sr0 obs=32k seek=0'
/dev/sr0: "Current Write Speed" is 1.0x1352KBps.

I had similar troubles burning large files until I started copying them to /tmp first. How much RAM have you?

I have 512MB RAM (you asked that already on page#134).

The following observations speak against the RAM theory:

- I can burn such large files to CD-RW with no problems.
- I tried to burn two very small files (a *.txt and a *.bmp with 4KB or so) which fails with the same error messages
- the writing process fails BEFORE a single bit is written to the DVD

It seems the main problem is that burniso2cd and PBurn both think that the DVD-R in the drive is not a valid medium.

I tried two different DVD-R discs. After the Puppy Linux PC refuses to write, I took them to my DVD videorecorder and burned them both. The videorecorder has no problems recognizing and burning them.

The question is: Is it a bad drive that cannot recognize the media and reports "bad disc"? Or is it the DVD-R or is it the software?

And there we are at the beginning again. :-)

@Semme: Basically this is a good idea. But to be honest, I'm not going to move heaven and earth to find out why the DVD-Rs don't work on that particular computer. I think I can live with it. Nonetheless... thanks for your ideas. :-)
