I am using Pburn 3.715 in Slacko 5.5
I had some fli and mp4 videos I wanted to burn to a DVD.
I selected Video from the menu, and added the video files to the list.
Evidently, Pburn converts the files in preparation for burning.
Anyway, my processor temp started out at 29c and progressed to 61c before I aborted on the conversion and burn.
My PC is a Compaq Presario with an AMD Athlon X2 4800 Dual-Core Processor, 3 gigs of ram, and I had temporary storage set up on /mnt/home on a partition with 17 gigs free.
Also, I had cleaned the PC recently and the fans appear to be working correctly.

I had read somewhere that the driver for processor scaling on my PC may show incorrect readings for my processor temp.
I seem to remember before of the PC shutting down/rebooting when the temp indicated around 70c.

Would the updated Pburn help here?
So, any suggestions?

I installed the newest version of Pburn and tried it.
I have a 2bar processor widget on the desktop that displays processor use and also blaze that I can use to check processor temp.

I tried the Video DVD creation again and frequently checked the processor temps with blaze determined to let the process continue to a finish.
The highest processor temp I saw was 73c and the burn of 4 video files to a DVD finished.
I do not know if I had a defective DVD disk or a DVD player that was not too great.
But I had pixel and sound corruption at places in all the videos and at one time in the conversion part of the process, I saw something in the terminal window that said buffer underflow.

I now am going to try to create a DVD with the same contents used in Pburn but using Peasydrive to do the burn.

When I, out of curiosity, disassembled the burner, I found an IC chip that literally looked fried! Basically though, that burner had been burning a DVD for a period of 9 hours. I had went to bed rather than wait on the burn and when I got up, the burn light on the burner was still on!
And NO. It did not burn a hole in the DVD disk although it may have burnt away the coating on the disk allowing the ray access to the chip in the area of the burnt away coating.

This may help for some understanding of system operation.

The x86 CPU in every Intel/AMD has 2 facets within its architecture: One is "basic" and the other is a floating-point feature. Some of the x86s are built with floating-point disabled.

When a program runs, the amount and durations of the instructions it churns will cause one/both of these facits to be used to accomplish work for you. And, this, in turn, causes the heat, a by-product of the work being done on your behalf.

I am not taking a position of whether that heat is good or bad. But, I will share 2 items that I have observed since my use of PCs began in the 1980s:

1. I have never had a PC to fail because the CPU crapped out or fried (I have thru manually playing around with motherboards screwed things up, though)
2. The sensors in motherboards provide a goodly portion of protection where in some cases, it will shut the PC down should things go awry (this has only been observed by me, once, where a server in a closet was shutting down because of the temp in closet.)

I know that some members have raised awareness of processor temps, but, for example, I have a 14 year old PC that I have recommissioned over and over which still is running and burning CDs and there have been times when I saw the processor needle pegged at 100% for hours and its still is performing real work, today, even though its NOT my main system.

AS you are monitoring CPU temps, I'm not so sure that your observations of the CPU temp means that you will experience a failure in your system or in the program which is running.

On the concern about the skips and other issues of your finished product (again, here, I AM NOT any authoritative user), I seem to rmember in my days of Windows and Nero and ... that there were cautions on running any background operations while burning is in progress. This may not be the case, but, certainly could have an impact as your buffer overflow messages may be alerting.

Lastly, one program with one type of operation may perform differently than another program doing the same operation. Your tests should be reported on the PeasyDisc thread to share your findings from your testing.

This is much that you are probably already aware of, but, just thought that mentioning it may be helpful.

They use the drives outer metal case for heat removal, I have moved my optical drive to the lower bay nearer the vent, and left the space above open for air flow. Why they EVER placed it at the hottest part of PC's with little or no air flow, It's a fricken @#$!, LASERBEAM that burns stuff.

For you and others: I've had the problem that 4.20 hangs after burning, and the burned MP3 files do not play in my home MP3/music/DVD player.

I just tried booting Lucid Puppy 5.2.8-005 without the savefile, and burned a directory of MP3 files with the pBurn 3.51 that is included with that distro.

It correctly presented a dialog after the burn, and the MP3 files play fine in the home player.

When it's convenient for you, will you please advise as to why 4.20 has the problem, and what can be done?

Oh, does this have something to do with versions of cdrecord, wodim,???

In the interim. I did a fresh frugal install of rerwin's new LuPu 5.2.8.6 on that computer, and it has a pBurn 4.12

That finished burning a directory of MP3s, and let me exit.
But my home player said "No disc".
I guess that means the CD was not closed/fixated?

Maybe I need some guidance on step-by-step troubleshooting, to find the cause.

Will try installed pBurn 4.20 under the LuPu 5.2.8.6

I recall some info (files?) from OscarTalks?

To play a CD in your music-only-CD-player, the disc must be burnt as a audio-CD. This is set in the main gui. Else the disc is only compatible with CD-rom readers like those in pc's.

Lupu has an older cdr-tools package, if not installed manually.

It's not a music-only-CD-player; it plays DVD, CD/CD-R/CD-RW.
And in particular, it plays discs with MP3 files.
Has done so for several years.
Earlier today, it read the folder of MP3 files written by pBurn 3.51, and played the files.

The lupumini-5.2.8.6-20131028.iso seems to have

Please try to use the 'windows 95/98' option. This is the default setting in pBurn-3 (or did you set any specific lso-level for your burn?). If this works, it would be important info to add. Even if it says windows 95/98, it will be readable in Linux and other systems compatible with the iso-level 3 standard.

No, though I don't know what lso-level means.

If this works, it would be important info to add. Even if it says windows 95/98, it will be readable in Linux and other systems compatible with the iso-level 3 standard.

And will try to include logs, from the computer on which I'm using pBurn.

At the moment, pBurn 4.20 has finished a fast blanking of a CD-RW (I hope the disc is OK - have mislaid the one I was using)
It shows a Finished dialog, so I will eject and try to burn a directory of MP3s.

FYI, as a diagnostic tool, I have used rcrsn51's peasydisc.
Not sure of the latest findings.

Despite my having set preferences, the Advanced burn line says

I have again set the filesystem to Windows 95/98

The Burn tab does say Close disc.

I will go ahead, and add to this file after the burn.

The burning progress window (yallow text on a black background) again hung, after the fixate, the last line of text being
the ones that says something about fifo and the buffer being empty 0 times etc

So I did Ctrl-Alt-Delete, and then xwin.

Ejected the CD-RW, and it is now playing MP3s on my Samsung DVD-P421 player.
