[SOLVED] laptop on battery, screenblank after 3 minutes?
When I use the laptop on battery, the screen goes blank when no activity occurs for 2 minutes 40 seconds. It restores immediately on moving the mouse or a key tap. It doesn't happen when it is plugged into the mains. How can I fix this as it is too soon and happens while reading web pages .... 10 minutes would be more suitable.

I suspect it's a Compaq issue and not one of Puppy. You might want to check the BIOS settings of that laptop to see if that's where the problem lies.

you could try fiddling with xset on the commandline or gxset on the Desktop menu.
Booting with acpi=off might help as well

I tried those options and there is nothing directly in the Bios to alter these settings.
It does seem that it is a Bios issue and strangely, after various pages found it google, it seems that I will have to reinstall windows 98 to access the power management settings. I found various pages indicating that the settings are only accessible via windows ..... how messed up is that !!

In my old Gateway laptop's Phoenix BIOS, I can configure such things by selecting POWER > DC Mode Power Savings and then set several items, including Standby Timeout and Video Timeout. Are you certain you dug deep enough in your Compaq's BIOS menu tree?

Definitely not there ... the bios is very limited.
EDIT: I updated the Bios to the latest version, which also had no effect.
Then I 'reset the bios to default' and rebooted and this has fixed the problem.
From what I read on various forums, the power management functions can only be accessed from the software that compaq made to add onto windows OSes. Resetting to default seems to have also reset all the hidden settings that I couldn't see, and now the screen stays on.
Now, I'd like to work out how I can alter the brightness of the screen, since the function keys don't work. If anyone has any ideas please advise, or I'll wait and make a fresh post when I've time to look at it.

I'm not sure whether mine is an older laptop use APM or a newer one using ACPI. Can I disable both via boot codes .... tried acpi=off but doesn't work .... if I put acpi=off apm=off would that work ?Power Management
