How easy is it to customize the look of Puppy?

#1 Post by On-A-Mission »

How easy is it to put a custom look on applications within Puppy? Can app names be changed in the title bars, graphics, skins etc.?

Thanks

With the jwm -Desktop you can change the color of the Window-Borders.
Puppys inbuilt Gtk-Themeselector can change the color of the parts in most windows, like scrollbars.

If you need more influence, you must install some dotpups.

The WindowManager "Icewm" is skinnable, it can make the border of Windows look like XP or other systems using Themes.
Here is a KDE2-like Theme for example: http://www.murga.org/%7Epuppy/viewtopic.php?t=2223
Here is a Mac-like decoration:

To alter the look (not just the color) of scrollbars and buttons, you need this:

and

Icewm and some themes for it best can be installed using the Dotpup-downloader:

Icewm has an own section in it with screenshots.

It will be part of puppy 1.0.5

Changing the title depends on the application.
Console-based applications:
rxvt --title test

for grafical applications this would require some tricks, I think it is not directly supported.

If you use the Xorg-Xserver, you even can add shadows and transparency (requires fast computers): http://noforum.de/dotpups/puppy-xorg.png

You may also want to have a look at this thread http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.p ... highlight= It explains how to configure IceWM.

Puppy 1.0.5 will have a nice utility that will let you change the theme for JWM. I've started creating some themes as dotpups. http://www.murga.org/~puppy/viewtopic.p ... highlight=

For the tone of your question it seems that it's more 'Is it easy to configure the look and feel in Linux?' instead of just in Puppy.

In your questions you had an strange one 'change the title in an application' I would have thought that it is obvious that this depends on the application itself, not on the operating system.

You can set the Window-title via Xlib.
I made some tools to manipulate windows like this, but it does not support titles yet. Just deactivate borders, run fullscreen, set stacking etc.
I will release a dotpup this week, but it is WindowManager-dependent. Works best with Icewm.

Meanwhile people might play around with that:
