I get here ...
Testing samba
Open a terminal window and type "testparm", the output from this will tell you if there are any errors in the syntax of your smb.conf file. If all is ok type "/usr/sbin/smbd" then "/usr/sbin/nmbd" and samba should be up and running. Type "smbclient -L \\\\\puppypc\\" (change puppypc to whatever your machine is called or type your machines IP address in place of it's name), this should give a status report for samba.

... and the process stops with an error. :-(

Code: Select all

# /usr/sbin/smbd
/usr/sbin/smbd: error while loading shared libraries: libdm.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
#

Have you searched for libdm? This issue has been dealt with before, so if you search the forum for posts with samba and libdm in them, you should find the solution.
Do you know a good gtkdialog program? Please post a link here

Yes I did.

I downloaded the file at the link the thread specified and followed the instructions.

When I go to the part about editing smb.conf the line of code they said should be removed was not there.

I do now have /lib/lindm.so.0 which is a symlink to /lib/libdm.co.0.0.4

It is displayed as a curved yellow triangle with an "!" in it. (Not sure if that is normal).

After I post this I am going to close everything and re-boot in case that is necessary for everything to play nicely together.

A little MS-like reboot and I now have gtksamba samba config in Network.

The goal is to make a printer connected to a Linux desktop visible to a laptop running WinXP (sadly necessary for the children's learning games).

Do I need to load something on the WinXP laptop or on the desktop actually physically hosting the printer or do something in CUPS?

Confused in FL ...
