Trying to install open office as I need to use a power point presentation. I get this message "the openoffice_cutdown3-2.2.0 package has been downloaded to /root/.packages,
however there is not enough room to uncompress and install it.
The free space is 242856 blocks but it is estimated you will
need 421302 blocks temporarily for the expansion and install.
Note: If you are using a pup_save.3fs personal storage file,
it can be made bigger -- see Utilities menu.
Click OK button to continue..."
I have an indicated free memory of 617m.
This is a usb install with a 2fs save file. Not sure what they mean by save.3fs.
I have renamed my save to .3fs and enlarged it. Free memory is 1.1g but still the same message
Unable to install cutdown OpenOffice .pup
You may want to try one of the OpenOffice .SFS files located here:
http://puppylinux.ca/members/OpenOffice/
You would need to download and place the file in the same directory as your pup_save file, open up the BootManager under the "System" menu, select the OpenOffice.sfs file and reboot. As to the 3fs vs 2fs thing. It has to do with how puppy mounts the save file, though I'm not sure what effects (if any) that changing the extension would cause.
Another route to installing the .PET package is to edit the petget script. Open /usr/sbin/petget with geany (text editor) go down to about line 937 and find this line:
EXPNEEDB=`expr $EXPFILEB \* 3` #bz2 can expand up to x3, need twice temp space. v3.01 changed 5 to 3.
Depending on Puppy version the number after "\*" might be 5 or 3 - I have successfully changed this to "2" (or even "1" in a pinch) to get a large package to download.

You can either try the OO .sfs, which JB4x4 provided the link to, or try manually extracting the .pet.
Any .pet , say abc.pet can be renamed to a abc.tgz file, then you can try extracting this with tar zxvf abc.tgz. If everything extracts OK, you'll get an error message about trailing garbage ignored, but you should also get a directory abc, containing the essential files.
If you copy these across to their proper locations then the program should be ready to run. (you may need to run fixmenus, in a console, for menu entries to work).

The title says pup topics are talking about pets.
Which is it? I tossed a coin and it came up heads.
It it's a pup a person could download the pup inside pup_save.FILE. Doesn't matter if it is 2fs or 3fs, whatever the current extension name is fine.
On the command line:
unzip namofpackage.pup
If it unzips correctly you could move the .pup outside the pup_save file or delete it. The reason for this action is to assist in the apparently not so accurate space calculations.
There should be an install script among the extracted pup file contents. Run it as you would any script. It might work. If not, no charge for the bad advice.

Done this and it works great, I can put short cuts on the desk top but can I put them on the start menu ? If it's possible how do you do it ?
Still have no idea how to get onto start menu, assume I have to enter something into .jwmrc
As an aside when open the file edit etc font is tiny, how do I make it bigger/readable !
