Lighthouse 3.01 Alpha4 - KDE 3.5.7 - ISO 278M
It will not run in ram, but anyway may run well.
If a pup_xxx.sfs cannot be loaded to ram, it is mounted directly from disk.
This will be slow, if the disk is a CD.
So puppy offers to copy pup_xxx.sfs to the harddisk, to speed it up.
You are offered this, when you shut down first time, and may create the savefile.
If have a Pentium 800 with 256 MB, and even huge puplets run fine on it like this.
But with 256 MB, it is wise to create a swap partitiion of 256 MB.
Else, you might encounter crashes or freezes with huger puplets.

New Lighthouse Pup
Hi TaZoc,
Good news about the new version - I have tried many other pup derivatives, but I keep coming back to LH301a4 because of its usability. Whatever you put into the new version I'll be testing out.
I run a modified LH Puppy with the .sfs for Open Office and with .pets or .pups for nVidia, Pan, and ktorrent and jSymphonic to put music on my Sony walkman.
Apps that I would like but that I couldn't make work:
Fotoxxx, gtkam. (Barry included Fotoxx in Dingo), Iscan scanner software. Have not had much luck with getting a scanner to work in 3.1 (managed OK with my old dektop running LH2.15).
I can get the .pet file for picasa to work OK but it's huge. What I like about picasa are the tools for improving images. Fotoxxx looks like it could do as good a job but it needs tweaking to make it work in 3.1.
There's always a discussion about music players with XMMS versus audacious being a hot one (although audacious is a fork of beep that came from XMMS). I can run both but I like your implementation of XMMS best and it uses less CPU. I also tried Zigbert's PMusic audio player. It's small and effective. I have installed Pmetetagger too but it seemed to miss the new IDE tags.
What would also be nice is a jukebox sort of application for organizing music files and editing mp3 tags. Amarok is the KDE standard but as you say probably too big. Looking on the forum I see there's others like Exaile (needs Python), Songbird and wxMusik more for gtk implementation.
All the best - Barburo.

Thanks, I'll consider your suggestions but it's not all that important. I've got Puppy Lighthouse 2.15 and that works well on my machine.tazoc wrote:Good question, I'm afraid not unless there is a technique I'm unfamiliar with. KDE, Firefox, GIMP and mplayer w/codecs are sizable, yet I use them all regularly. Although I wish I could 'cut the fat' I still want most of the apps and graphics I use available in LiveCD or first-boot mode--hence Lighthouse has grown quite a bit. The beta I'm working on has a core file, pup_301b3_lighthouse that is 286 MB. In my brief VBox testing, it needed about 384mb RAM to boot.Colonel Panic wrote:Good work. Is it possible for it to run in 256 MB of RAM, for those of us with older machines?
Other than LighthousePup 215, which doesn't have KDE and I don't plan to update, you might consider official Puppy and add EZPup (which includes IceWM window manager, or MU's great puplet Muppy-Mini http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=33542
If I manage to build a stripped-down Lighthouse in the future that boots on 256 MB RAM I will let you know.
Take care,

Progress on LighthousePup 3.01b; Iscan scanner software?
Great feedback all, and I want to let you know I appreciated all your comments.
MU, that makes sense, I don't know why VirtualBox seems to need more RAM but maybe I didn't set it up correctly... maybe if I use Official Puppy to format ext3 and add a 256 MB Linux-swap partition, like you said, reboot, maybe then it'll boot Lighthouse with the memory set at 256 MB...
I just finished adding Pburn-2.0.9, gtkam-0.1.12-2.4 and fotoxx-5.3.1. Earlier this week I also added Azureus 3.0.5.2 and the kdemultimedia package, including Juk Jukebox & Music Manager, Noatun & kaudiocreator. I'm also working on a separate Amarok-1.4.10.pet designed for the Lighthouse ISO I plan to upload this weekend, barring any unforeseen problems. It has grown a bit more to 323 MB but still feels quick on my box.
Barburo, can you post a link to the Iscan scanner software? I'm not familiar with that and a cursory google search led me down some dead-ends Maybe I can experiment with it sometime soon...

scanner software
Hi Tazoc
No sweat if you don't include scanner capability in your new LHPup. All I need (or anyone else needs I guess) is basic scanner software (sane, xsane, plus any backends). With a new clean puppy installs may work better. I could not get ttuuxxx's scanner software to work in my present version of LHPup301a4. It's probably operator error again (i.e. me) .
The link is
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=28224
One of ttuuxxx's packages includes iScan (specific to Epson scanners) and the other doesn't. I was interested in the iscan because I have an Epson cx4800 that is a scanner/printer.

New Lighthouse ISO, new thread
LighthousePup-3.01Beta7 is out.

Barburo,
Thanks for the link, I'll see what I can do about scanner support. I don't have an Epson scanner but I do have an old Agfa USB to try.
Take care,
TazOC

I am running lighthouse 301a4 . I have two partitions, hda1 and hda5 the pup save 2fs file is on hda5. I was booting lh 301 b7 and got to where it started to load the pup save 2fs. thought better of it and aborted the boot. then i copied all the pup files to a usb drive. then i booted b7 in ram an chose not to save on shutdown. now, when i boot lh 301 a4 it gives me a choice of loading pup save 2fs or lighthouse save 2fs. there is no lighthouse save 2fs on the hda5. what did i do? and how can i get rid of the bogus entry ?
Cheers
EDIT: False alarm, i also backed up pup save 2fs to hda5/lighthouse a4 is running fine and b7 looks good.

What is pupswap.swp?
Good question, I've never seen it, but I just did some searching for 'pupswap.swp' (with the 'a') and found this:Bligh wrote:What is the pupswp.swp and when did it get created?

at http://www.puppylinux.org/wiki/archives ... n/swapfile
What I don't understand is "if needed". I suspect it is only created by Puppy in a specific situation or when using the universal installer if RAM is less than a certain amount and there is no linux-swap partition.Puppy Linux will automatically use a Linux swap partition. With Puppy 2.x and later when using a pup_save file, Puppy will use these files for swap on boot if in same directory as the pup_save file : WIN386.SWP, PAGEFILE.SYS, pup.swp and, with Puppy 2.01, pupswap.swp. Puppy 2.01 and later will create a swap file if needed in same dir as pup_save if needed, unless using 2.02 or later which won't create one if not one of the following file systems: msdos (FAT12/16), vfat (FAT32), ext2, ext3, reiserfs, minix
Hopefully someone more informed than I will reply.

What is the consensus, can Lighthouse pup 301a4 be run with 256mb ram and a swap partition? Can some of the changes to later pups be applied to LH301a4? I don't mind if the cd has to be in the drive, but I have copied all of the files to hdd.
I was struggling with a xp hdd and no data partition and no linux swap partition. I changed the hdd, now I have a linux partition, a swap partition and a data partition.
All the other pups seem to be at home on this laptop.
Cheers

Can't hurt to try, but a limitation in Puppy's init script kept larger derivatives such as LighthousePup from booting on machines with 256M Ram. I re-wrote the init script as of LHP3.01c for that reason.Bligh wrote:What is the consensus, can Lighthouse pup 301a4 be run with 256mb ram and a swap partition?
I'm not sure, when you say copied all of the files, are you talking, say 4 or 5, a frugal install; or hundreds, a full install? It sounds like you've done a full install (at shutdown option to use partition instead of file.) I don't know how to best upgrade a full install of Puppy. I would think it's possible, but I prefer the simplicity of a frugal install. Sorry if I'm not much help here-- maybe someone else can?Can some of the changes to later pups be applied to LH301a4? You've down a good job! Nearly every machine is different. I think Puppy does an outstanding job of detecting and installing on a wide range of hardware and software configurations. There will always be a few that are difficult, especially for Puppy derivatives with fewer testers and machines to test on, compared with the wider base of official Puppy testers.I was struggling with a xp hdd and no data partition and no linux swap partition. Hi, tazoc! Good work out there!
Special thanks for good cyrillic fonts (original puppy has few and ugly ones) and KDE+xwindows.
1 more good thing: i finally got my sound card to work!
One single issue by now: switching keyboard layouts with keyboard buttons don't work. i.e. i enable Xkb, press set buttons but layouts don't change

I am transitioning to Pclinuxos from Linspire 5x (which I am reluctant to let go of) for my installed os. I boot all of my pups from cd with a 500mb pup save file on the data partition. The Dell laptop has reached the age where it can't remember how much ram it has, it consistently remembers the first 250 mb but frequently forgets the other 128 mb. It was free, and otherwise runs fine. I just like A4, all the others seem to be plain vanilla after A4. I can run A4 on all of my other pc"s tho. After I back up my pup files I am going to try booting A4 from a LHC cd and see what happens. Not knowing what files pup may want, I copy all files from the cd"s to the hdd. Most of my time, so far, has been spent setting up all the different pups and Pclos. I need to spend some time getting more familiar with linux in general and Puppy specifically. I have too many pc's, if there is such a condition. Thanks again, for all your work and time. Our time, is the greatest gift we can give.
Cheers

Have you tried Control Center | Regional & Accessibility | Keyboard Layout | check 'Enable keyboard layouts'? There are 3 tabs with many options on that panel.Special thanks for good cyrillic fonts (original puppy has few and ugly ones) and KDE+xwindows.
