Skipstone

#16 Post by raffy »

Skipstone is already version 1, and its download page mentions Puppy Linux:
http://www.muhri.net/skipstone/page.php3?node=download

By using Skipstone, Puppy developers can help accelerate its development. It shares with Puppy a common base: GTK.

If part of mozilla code is needed to run Skipstone, then package builders take note and only add mozilla code on top of this.

It used to be Mozilla code only, but then Mozilla was dropped by Mozilla and now its outdated and full of security holes, Thats why Skipstone was rebuilt with the capabilities of using Seamonkey and Firefox Headers, But at this point only the Seamonkey path has been explored on puppy leaving a very large and overlooked opportunity left for someone to compile it with Firefox. If I was Capable of compiling it with Firefox I would in a heart beat, but I'm not at that point yet and wouldn't trust my outcome, well I'm honest:)

Hello ttuuxxx,

Have you tried compiling it? If so, are you getting any errors?

I have uploaded an Unleashed difference tarball that reflects the package changes that were implemented in building Puppy-302Alpha2 over those contained in Puppy-302Alpha1.

Get it here:
http://www.puppylinux.ca/tpp/tronkel

This was made with Barry's latest scripts, that were designed for the purpose of being able to upload and store incremental changes to the base Unleashed framework, rather than having to upload the entire altered Unleashed framework. The full upload would have been 1.5G approximately - as compared with the difference tarball that is only 12MB - quite a difference!

So anyone needing to use a copy of the Unleashed that was used to build 3.02Alpha2 can access this by downloading the original 3.02Alpha1 Unleashed plus this difference tarball.

These 2 tarballs can then be merged by means of the diff-merge script, so allowing the next incremental version change to be based on this new base.

Thanks for the scripts Barry.

Ha, ha, I came here to post a message about the scripts, but you have already found and used them!

Here is my announcement, plus basic usage instructions:
http://puppylinux.com/blog/?p=181

The 'diff-create' script has more explanation inside it, in case you need it.

Keep barebones Chihuahua the BASICS
I had originally thought of the Chihuahua core as being based on a barebones version, but with the possibility of the user having all of the functionality he/she might need - without necessarily having to download a Lassie expansion module.

Problem here is that a barebones 3.02 has Netsurf only, that IMHO does not really cut it as the only browser available for anything like normal web browsing. If this is the case therefore, the Chihuahua module will have to end up larger than a barebones.

I have made a mistake here though by including the name "barebones" in the filename. What it ought to have been called is:

puppy-302Alpha2_chihuahua-skipstone.iso.

I think I'll rename it to this. So Chihuahua does not need to be so size constrained as a Barebones. This is not to say however, that Chihuahua must stay at its present size. Suggestions for trimming it back are always welcome. As always in Puppy, small is beautiful - the smaller the better.

I like tuuxxx's idea about compiling Skipstone. I wonder if it's possible to compile Skipstone with Firefox headers only and not with the full Firefox package and then having to rip stuff out of the Firefox package that might impact Skipstone's performance. Theoretically this idea might end up with a saving in size, but I don't think anyone really knows at this stage. I'll research this when I get a mo.

I'm also wondering if ought to make a Chihuahua based on Opera rather than Seamonkey. Might be a popular choice?

Or maybe someone with access to the 302Alpha2 Unleashed might want to have a go? It's a community effort, so please feel free!
