Actually Barry did have a version of puppy I think in the early 2 series with Opera, I think it was the web development of Seamonkey which pushed him over to the dark side. Really the new look of Opera is great, plus they have tons of widgets, too bad they don't run when opera isn't, Like the clock, forecast, etc on the desktop. plus Its funny they make tabs for each one when really it should be a part of the taskbar.Colonel Panic wrote:Yeah, I wonder if Opera 9.50 would make an acceptable full replacement for Seamonkey in Dingo (possibly as an alternative version), since it has its own e-mail and chat client?
Oh well, its a start.

Works great
I recommend this .pet rather than the .tgz file from Opera, because at least on Puppy 3.01 the install.sh script tends to terminate with an error. The Opera installation is still usable, but some things such as a proper desktop files don't get built.
(on the other hands shared Opera builds tend to have better looking fonts...)
Some useful post-install tricks:
Disable the disk cache
Opera has two page caches, one on disk and one in memory. When running unionfs you do NOT want to cache a lot of temp files on disk, because when they get deleted unionfs will incorrectly generate zillions of .wh files and eventually eat all your disk space. Go in Preferences->Advanced->History and turn the disk cache off.
(the memory cache is faster and safer anyway, you may want to select a maximum size rather than "auto" if you are low on RAM though).
Make fonts look better in Opera
optional: install some good looking TTF fonts, such as Microsoft Web Core or Liberation Fonts.
recommended: even if you didn't install new fonts go thru the usual font beautifyng steps (search "mkfontscale" in the forum).
make sure Opera ignores ugly fonts:
- Type opera:config in the address bar.
- type fonts in the search box
- under User Prefs uncheck "Enable X core fonts"
- restart Opera
- go in the preferences and assign the new nice fonts you installed to menus, toolbars, etc.
also useful: make sure you exec export QT_XFT=1 before starting opera (I just add it at the beginning of /usr/bin/opera).
Importing bookmarks and settings from a PC installation
In 9.50 and later versions bookmarks are easy, you just sign in Opera Link and get them synchronized. Other stuff such as cookies, Wand passwords and email settings can be copied from the Opera Profile folder in the PC to /root/.opera, as long the Opera version is the same. Before you start overwriting things it's better to backup a copy of /root/.opera, just in case...
-Wand passwords: wand.dat
-Cookies (for logins etc): cookies4.dat
-sessions, mail, skins, widget: copy the folders
- Do not copy the whole content of the Profile folder, some files are PC specific. Also be wary of symlinking stuff that could be rewritten in a different format.

I recently installed opera 9.50 (beta 2) before reading in this thread about a new pet for 9.51.
I am generally happy with the performance of Opera (first time I have used it) in comparison to SeaMonkey on this laptop.
(The only site that is real slow so far on Opera is www.thehungersite.com which I click on daily to provide free food for starving people; it loads faster on my Nokia Internet Tablet (?!) and much faster on my wife's iMac (running Firefox 3). That site loads about as slowly with SeaMonkey)
What is the advantage of Opera 9.51 over Opera 9.50 beta 2?
Steve

Thanks.
I just updated using the 9.5.1 pet and have not noted any problems.
I found a directory that contained both a 9.5.1 and 9.5.0 beta subfolders and deleted the beta. Afterwards, I noted that there is an uninstall folder for opera.
Is it advantageous to use the uninstaller in terms of complete removal of unnecessary files?
Is it problematic in terms of removing files that 9.5.1 would need to work properly?

Opera 9.52
Where do I download the pet for Opera 9.52, please.
Does it overwrite my older install and transfer my bookmarks etc.
Do I have to reinstall the spellchecker afterwards as well.
Thanks in advance
Jason

Check the 1st page of this thread.jason1308 wrote:Where do I download the pet for Opera 9.52, please.
The .pet will overwrite the old opera if you did not uninstall the old opera, and your settings will transfer automatically.jason1308 wrote:Does it overwrite my older install and transfer my bookmarks etc.
Nope.jason1308 wrote:Do I have to reinstall the spellchecker afterwards as well.

I am using Opera 9.60beta1 on ChurchPup 3.01 and it works nicely. YouTube plays nicely enough. Also, e-mail servers and myspace (not that I actually use like some may) work well too. Overall, an improvement over the 9.52.
It can be downloaded from Opera and installed from source code very easily.

The only windows I have are those on my home.
Hi,
All working I downloaded
ftp://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/opera/linux/960 ... 386.tar.gz
followed the old instructions from
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=28317
and then tried running the Opera "install.sh" and that worked fine as well.
What really made me happy is BBC iplayer works alough not in full screen (yet)
