Here's the easy way to make Firefox the default browser on your desktop, for the people having a bit of trouble.
just install this pet package

Good work tuuxxx with the Firefox dotpet service pack.

I'll also sort that out directly in Unleashed for the next build of 302Alpha.
Might go back to a stable Firefox instead of a nightly? Whadaya think?

I agree 100% with the stable firefox 2.12 release is the best version, Better then the 3 beta for CSS rendering

Some people use Alpha build Puppys as if they are release versions

We should try and make things easy for them by providing a working browser - agree with reliability

Another example of undisciplined, ad hoc codenaming and the sometimes confusing managerie that it generates.

Lets see here ... should the new wiki page title remain "TalkingStickLassie" or be changed to:

1) TalkingStickLassieChihuahua,

2) TalkingStickChihuahuaLassie,

3) TalkingStickChihuahua, or

4) TalkingStickClusterFawk?

I'm interested in:

Firefox
http://www.puppylinux.ca/tpp/tronkel/lassieR3_302.sfs∞
Contains Osmo, Firefox 2.0.0.12, Sylpheed and a cut-down EZpup301, but with all themes.

However, when I try to DLoad, I get this message:

he requested URL /tpp/tronkel/lassieR3_302.sfs was not found on this server.

beware of mines!

@wingruntled,

That looks like the one with the version of Firefox codenamed "Minefield".

@ tronkel,

Can we please get to a version with a stable Firefox quickly? My test system kept downloading updates, then discovering that the DOM inspector was incompatible, until I turned updating off. I also have personal problems with anything labeled "Minefield", it leads to dreams about idiots carrying off triangular signs as souvenirs.

Yes, the it was the name "Minefield" that attracted me to this version of Firefox in the first place. I'm always up for a bit of experimental "danger" i.e. minefield = risky. Alpha testers usually enjoy a bit of calculated risk though.

I have a list of stuff to do to the next Chihuahua including going back to a stable Firefox plus other upgrades that Barry has brought out plus some stuff to be backported from Dingo to version 3. I'll also get something done about the non-functional Gxine

This will take a few days probably. In the meantime you can do one of 2 things.

1. Download Firefox 2.0.0.12 from mozilla.org
2. Keep taking the pills that prevent the minefield nightmares ... lol

Now that sounds like a game plan! Instead of trying to trim it down or add more toys. Just take the already good and do some updates and fix some bugs (Gxine) and turn this addition into a solid as a rock CE.
Which will probably be the last version of Puppy that will have as much backward compatible as it does with 2.* pups & Pets.

Order out of chaos. Tronkel very much looking forward to your efforts.
I am using Dingo Alpha 7 at the moment because of the enhancements and to develop familiarity.

However as you know there are strengths in the 3 series, so combining the best of the new and developing a solid base will be welcome.

An Alpha release is fine with experimental software.

Have fun.

As usual info is available on the wiki for updating

Minefield

#27 Post by geneven »

I don't like Minefield. I'm happy to take risks, but I want something in return, I'm not for skateboarding on the freeway.

The Firefox 3 beta that is compatible with Mozilla Weave seems to be the most advanced one out there. And Weave is pretty good (it does bookmark synchronization), though slow when you run it the first time.

browsers and minefields

#28 Post by prehistoric »

Because of the above problem with installing and uninstalling the DOM inspector I've switched to Opera 9.26. For those who want more stable browsers there are pets available for both Firefox 2.0.0.12 and Opera 9.26. If the above Firefox+JRE+Flash is too big for you, try installing the Firefox 2.0.0.11 (or Firefox 2.0.0.11+Flash and letting it auto-update to get Firefox 2.0.0.12 w/o Java. After installing Opera and changing /usr/local/bin/defaultbrowser, I've had no real trouble, (except the gxine already mentioned).

As Lobster points out, unstable applications are acceptable in an alpha, in general. Puppy 3.02 is really a consolidation of 3.01, including bug fixes available but not in the ISOs. Once we get past the point of fixing major outstanding problems, we can have alphas with a little more experimental flavor, without having everyone screaming about instability. This one is a special case.

Simplest way to make Firefox the default browser:
Go to /usr/local/bin (using ROX).
Then open the "defaultbrowser" file as text using (right-click).
Replace the name of the current default browser (currently Dillo, say) with the text firefox. Save the text file.

Firefox is now the default browser. Should work on all versions, if Firefox is installed correctly with its symlink in /usr/bin.

Mozilla Weave with Firefox

#32 Post by geneven »

Mozilla Weave, a major add-on to Firefox Beta 3 version 5, won't install for me in the latest Chihuahua -- will it for anyone?
