This only works if you are always planning on installing puppy.[1] Puppy has always been a live CD. If these programs aren't available in the live CD then you can't do MS compatible word processing / spreadsheet handling.

One of puppy's original goals was to breathe life into old hardware. Very often in these old systems the processor is the limiting factor and is hard or uneconomic to upgrade. RAM however is often a very simple upgrade. I can take 3 junked 300MHz systems with 128MB RAM, shove all the RAM into one of them and it should do a reasonable job of running puppy. One of the reasons that puppy can work snappily in this scenario is because all the base applications are permanently in RAM. Extra sfs files are not loaded into RAM. If you put abiword and gnumeric into an extra sfs file puppy loses its advantage and is in fact disadvantaged because it has to load the executables from disk and use the processor to decompress them.

Of course you could use each the 3 systems above to do a full install with 128MB RAM, a direct comparison of the two would be interesting, I'm sure there is one round here somewhere.

Some of the above comments about performance are my unsubstantiated opinion and if any one has results that contradict I would be interested.

[1]unless you are proposing a new class of applications that are stored on CD and loaded when needed, in which case you have lost the ability to run without the CD mounted.

puppy 3 seies look and feel

#18 Post by charnisingh »

hallo,

i have tested bkicewm Pet in Dingo 4 a7 and it is working i must thanks the developer for this master piece which i was looking for quite some time as who do's ezpup 3.0.1 is qute big in size. though Dingo does not need any beautification as in itself it is beautiful but by installing ezpup
gxine use to get stabilized and its full screan mode functions the way it should.
by installing bkicewm it has the same effect on gxine..
bkicewm requires in addition 2 more libs in Dingo 4 a7 ie:
libgdk pix buf so.2 and liblmlib so.1
and to start command is: xwin icwm.

let us all hail and enjoy the light version of ICWM. i have added one more theme in it-vista black IV. to go with Digo.

Thats excellent to hear, I am so glad for that. I'm still working on it and have 2 more releases scheduled before I think I can say "finally its done!!" lol I've been working on it for 5 days now around 12hrs a day. My next release will have a custom theme that I've been building, and actually might be a bit smaller of a package. Since the theme is smaller to start with :)

Anyone have, or is there such a thing as mini sized desktop icons? Afaik, the only way is individual resizing.

what sizes are you look for?
most the time when you download icons they come 16x16 or 18x18 24x24 32x32 48x48 64x64 128x128 256x256
you can resize them easily with mtpaint, I usually use Photoshop CS3 on my xp machine for that.
and what kind of icons are you looking for? or do you just want a batch resizer program.

Lol sorry about that some versions I don't post, well after 8hrs of working on it, I get a bit tired so then I think that's enough for the day, so i package it and back it up,then I go and do something with the wife and kids, But it starts bugging me and I start up on a newer release, hence the muck-up in the numbering game.

The theme I've been working on is coming around very nicely :) tomorrow I have to work on the close/restore/minimize buttons that's going to take some time because its about 20 of them.
Monday I'm going to build a small application for the menu.
icewm6.pet is the latest and I'll have the next one up tomorrow.
Thanks for telling me that I had an older release here.
Its been updated to the one you have :)
What I really would like is someone to figure out how to change the background color/image of blinky, Blinky is a real pain with IceWm, I'm glad I finally got it working right :) Now it would be nice to color behind it, If i could even find the icon that it uses, I could color the background very easily. The icon isn't in the mini-icons or pixmaps folder.

Answered in your other post on the subject. Use the -bg "#colorcode" parameter to start blinky from startup in /root/.icewm directory.

Hmmm..didn't know..or think  of much of what you say here. I have found resizing the desktop icons..a bit of a pia so far. :(

A batch resizer program sounds wonderful & simple. Never hearda that before so googled it.

Something quick & easy to change all desktop icons sizes in one shot is what I'd like. Pclos has such a feature & just a matter of a few clicks.

Also would be nice to be able to change the desktop font sizes quick. Prob there is already a way to do so.. :?

I find that stuff quite complicated in pup, ..so far. Have no clue how to play with what shows up in the menu.

I like a slideshow of background desktop pix & I think pup has that feature.. thx

you cannot search for words with less than 4 characters.
MU is too short, but Karlsruhe or Mark works.
Or you can use:
http://wellminded.com/puppy/pupsearch.html
But searching for my name only will not give you very helpfull results as there are over 9000 messages

As per your request, here is the Smooth-Ruby IceWM theme and the Red-swales background you asked about.

Cheers

I just updated my previous icewm package to #7 located on page 1 of this post,
-it now has icons in the start menu
-A new theme that I did all the graphics and use 3 separate themes codes and altered to suite the theme better.
-Blinky is now finally the themes color
-Plus dog paw and 2 bones for close/min buttons :)
ttuuxxx

Only thing left is to figure out how to get free memory applet running:)

Tried the above & works a bit but not what I'm after. Understand the prob of trying a normal search of 2 letters. Just to clear up what I'm talking about, every post has a profile button on the bottom left. Clicking on yours takes you here. This is where if you click on 'Find all post by MU', you end up with..

'No topics or posts met your search criteria

Pretty sure it worked at one time & yours is the only one that doesn't work now.

Thanks for sharing that "Smooth Ruby" WhoDo! Nice addition to the IceWM in my Puppy plus the ones that I run on my other distro desktops. So too, thanks for the accompanying wallpaper as well mate! :) I always have my eye peeled as you know for themes to add to my "collection", especially if they've come from you and have undergone any touchups on your end---you just have this perfect knack and eye for artistic detail if ever I've seen it! :D

What really caught my eye though? It was the screenie of that blue/steel-blue IceWM theme you showed back there a bit ago. Wowzers! Now THAT was neat! Care to share that with the rest of us as well perhaps? Pretty please with sugar on it? (Don't you love to see a grown man just begging for a theme in a forum? LOL!! :D )

Keep up the fantabulous work folks and "may the force be with you!" ;)

Amicalement,

Anything for you, jimmi. The theme itself is only 36kb compressed, so I included the "pretty kitty" wallpaper as well. Don't be scaring Isaac with it, eh!

You've got it Ace! No scaring Isaac with the wallpaper. Bingo! (Or is that "Dingo"? LOL!) Now you aught to know me better than that by now WhoDo! Me? Li'l Ol' Me? Scare a KID?

Preposterous! hehe!

I owe you one for this WhoDo. Thanks! That's one gorgeous theme I thought anyway. Hope it gets included in any up-coming EZpup you may be doing.

Thanks so much again mate! Now if you don't mind? I've got a couple of new themes here to go play around in! (Along with a window manager to boot into as I've been favouring lxpanel/openbox/rox-desktop the past week of so. :) )

Amicalement mon frere!
