Nearly missed ya, ttuuxxx. I had a look at the download site. You linked. Looks good. I also like prit1's pilot site, too.

Raffy has suggested that everyone registers again for the new site rather than migrate the users over. Prit has already written and tested the migration script so we can easily go either way depending on the consensus.

CamelCase not required?

Tom, please confirm that CamelCase notation in names is not required in the new site. (I've registered there as "raffy", so I guess a name like "RaffyM" is not required.)

Registering in the new site is quick anyway, so I guess having the same Forum name there is convenient. (Others may want to change their username [ie, different from that in the Wiki], so this will be their opportunity.)

No, CamelCase usernames are not required with Drupal.

@Ttuuxxx: Definitely having a good description and thumbnail would be excellent for the repository. Someone would really need to dedicate their time to go through all the puppy software available and write up the description and create thumbnails.

In the meantime, I just have created a sample repository that can be used with the existing Puppy software without much extra work.

Here is the link:
http://tipsforeveryone.com/puppyrepo/public.html

@Raffy: Do you know how many users are registered in WikkaWikki currently? Just an approximate number would do. I am not sure if all of them would want to manually go and register in the new puppysite.

My suggestion is that we can migrate the users as such to the new Puppy site and if anyone wants to change their id, they can do it manually later or contact the site admin. Also if most agree that the WikkaWikki form of username is not needed in the new site, we can modify it to just use small case during migration.

My user account was blocked at the old site, so I vote for registering again unless you can bring the accounts over but block the old passwords. That way we also get rid of the old users who haven't been active in a long while. It's not such an imposition on the rest of us, given all the hard work you guys have done.

I was also going to suggest that we don't migrate any personal pages. As you said somewhere else, there are profile options in Drupal that give the same features and users can copy their own info over if it is really important to them. raffy is going to repoint puppyweb.com to the old location for a period of parallel access anyway. We won't advertise that unless someone asks, though. Besides, there is no point in making more work than necessary for you guys in getting data across. Just my $AUD0.02c worth.

MU used to have a html file with either the description of the package OR a link to the forum page where it was originally announced. That might do for existing files, as long as there is the option for uploading a one paragraph description with all new files added.

OTOH, we have a bunch of people itching to contribute something who may appreciate the opportunity of taking on this task to give something back to Puppy. No-one can say no until they are asked. Any takers?

@Whodo: If all agree that registering is the best way to go, then so be it.

Anyway, the script for migrating from WikkaWikki to Drupal is ready and tested. I did this yesterday and tried it out on my web server and it was smooth.

If we go for registering, then my work would go wasted. :( . But I really dont care as I always learn something from coding. :)

I don't believe in wasting people's good faith efforts, Prit. Maybe my access problem won't exist when the accounts are migrated. If it's already done, I wouldn't want the process held up for my minor concerns. The sooner we get the new site functioning the better, IMHO. Let's migrate then, if everyone's ready. 8)

@Whodo: I was kidding by showing a sad face and saying that my work will go wasted. I really enjoy programming (any language) and so I never consider anything a waste because I keep learning new things from the code I write.

So if we choose to use the script or not, I have absolutely no problems at all.

I suppose that pirate-speak may be hindering communication, but I never meant to insinuate that BitTorrent was not P2P.
My italics were meant to emphasize thaty I was conceding the point that BT was P2P... damned text-only communication.

I've been out of things lately (a perfect storm of things including moving into a new flat where I don't have internet access yet) but am still willing to help out with using Servage for metalinks, BT etc.

Tho any major stuff will probably have to wait till I get Internet in my new home.

I've started to keep track of progress through tombh's blog on the site. Please make comments and discussion there if you wish...

What might be blocked re metalinks is the P2P traffic/protocol of a p2p-containing metalink used by a p2p-enabled client, but not the HTTP/FTP traffic of the metalink. so a user can still get the file.
That makes me feel better about metalinks (I honestly don't know much about them).
the important part about metalinks is that they contain the locations of a file (whether it's mirrors or p2p) so if some mirror go down, you can always get the download AND repair info to fix errors in downloads.

now at Hostgator

The new site is going live now - Barry has kindly pointed the puppylinux.org domain to Hostgator.

Cheers!

Gosh! I wasn't quite ready for that, I took the site offline for a bit when I realised because a few things still aren't ready. The worst of it is tidied up now but there's still a lot to be done, so likelihood is if you find something that isn't right I will most probably already know about it. However, all the functionality of the site should be there, therefore the ability to edit and create content etc.

The main things at the moment are missing content from many of the main pages. I have no fixed ideas about what should go in the pages, I would very much like to think that the community felt welcome to create/edit pages as they see fit. However, in the absence of that i will do my best for now.

There's still some programming to do in the backend aswell, such as the google translations and dynamic content for the front pages of each section in the site.

Oh yeah, the new address is www.puppylinux.org, so all the old hostgator temporary links need to be changed.

help

Thanks, Tom. I wonder how the "DOWNLOAD PUPPY 3.01Get the latest official version" can be removed from the front page. (The latest version is 4.00.) I've tried to, but can't figure it out.

Also, the URL to the old wikka ( http://puppylinux.org.wikka ) goes into the wiki archives (of the new site), so am putting the URL of the old wikka in the archive pages in case members wanted to access the old site (now renamed to http://pupweb.org/wikka ).

I wondered about that too raffy.
I created a new official release description for 4.00 in the hope it would propagate through but no joy.
For anyone getting messed about by wobbly dns queries the following entries in /etc/hosts should help whilst the name servers stablise.

Code: Select all

#uncomment one of these entries
#old site this will only work for www.puppylinux.org/wikka
#77.232.66.57 puppylinux.org

#new site
74.54.199.50 puppylinux.org

Working now!

I'd just like to say a big WELL DONE to Tom. He wasn't expecting this today and has spent all day coding like a monkey.
