torrent

The following are the same files beeing mirrored by Caneri (Thanks!):
ISO:
pcpuppyos_3.01-rc6.iso - 605 MB - md5sum

.delta file (to update an RC5 iso to RC6 instead of downloading the whole thing):
pcpos_RC5_to_RC6.delta - 20 MB

Code: Select all

xdelta3 -d -s pcpuppyos_3.01-rc5.iso pcpos_RC5_to_RC6.delta pcpuppyos_3.01-rc6.iso
WineTools addon (mfc40.dll, dcom98, True Type fonts, and a heavily tweaked Wine setup):
WineTools_preconfigured.pet - 12 MB - md5sum
NOTICE: The WineTools addon contains elements which require the user to have a valid license for Windows

Changes since RC 5:
fixed pebble bug
upgraded to ntfsprogs-2.0.0 (from Dingo)
upgraded to ntfsprogs-2.0.0 (from dingo)
upgraded pctorrent to 1.4
added more harddrive devices
added mrxvt
fixed usbview segfault w/ "Smooth" GTK engine
added partimage
added a couple new timezones, including Sydney
replaced Xproc with Hardinfo for system information display
updated ROX's symlink emblem
updated Wine to 0.9.57
added dcom98.exe to the winetools addon
added more true type fonts to the winetools addon
updated clamav virus defs to March 9, 2008

maybe fixed cups problem by changing /usr/spool/samba to /var/spool/samba
maybe fixed LinNeighborhood problem by adding 'client signed = yes' to /etc/samba/smb.conf

Okay. This fixes a couple small bugs, and I added a couple small improvements while I was at it. I'm not sure if I managed to fix the issues that jamesbond had with CUPS and LinNeighborhood.

My "auxiliary" computer Erasmus is and will be seeding the torrent 24-7 now, other than a potential short break next week (if I don't get a new HD for my birthday, I'll be pulling a drive from him to feed to Omnius (my primary), but I'll have Erasmus back up pretty quickly).

Have fun :)

I just installed pcPuppyOS 3.01rc6 along with Puppy 3.01 standard on a pendrive (two separate partitions), with triple-boot (3.01 standard from pendrive, 3.01 rc6 from pendrive, Win XP from hard disk). Works fine.

Now my question: pcPuppyOS mounts all available devices and partitions at startup. I would prefer to have only the pcPuppyOS partition mounted automatically; I can mount other partitions manually if and when I need them. How/where can that be configured?

Start -> Utilities -> Toggle Services -> Auto Mount All Partitions on Boot (disable)

Lots of handy things in that menu. :)

HI Pizzasgood, many thanks for thjis. Slight problem in that I am trying to download via torrent and am getting seeds but only about 10k download speed. I prefer torrent (more environmentally friendly etc) and was wondering if you had any more thoughts re implementing my idea for on start up of a new installation it suggests that people might like to seed this torrent and so increase the availability.

I had forgotten about that. It's too late to put into pcPuppyOS, but I'll try to remember it for later. I'll hopefully be working on a new Pizzapup over summer or maybe in the fall, so I might see what I can come up with then.

Hi Pizzasgood, that would be great. I wish I had the skills and the time to help with this (I can perhaps do a bit of testing). What I particularly like about this idea is that it doesn't matter how popular Puppy becomes, as long as enough people seed as we request, distribution will not be a problem. (I don't know of any other O/S with such a system so it will another bonus for Puppy)
Cheers

Good to go :) just ran into a little snag. When it came time to select a login & password, I just pressed the enter key. After creating a save file & rebooting, I'm then required to enter a login & password & enter doesn't work, or a buncha other stuff that came to mind, ..puppy, pcpuppyos etc.

I could easily set it up from scratch again but is there another way?

pcPuppyOS 3.01rc6 with Lin'N'WinNewB & xpsp1 (pizzapup too).

Heavily tweaked Wine setup??

What you set with the enter key was the password. When it asks to log in, it starts with username. So first type root and press enter, then when it asks for password just press enter without pressing anything else.

If that doesn't work, boot any Puppy with pfix=ram. Mount the partition and then the save file you created. Go to the etc/ directory in that save file. Copy the /etc/inittab_AUTO file over the etc/inittab file. Unmount the save file and partition and reboot. Now when you try booting pcPuppyOS it won't ask for the password. If you feel like changing it, just run passwd. You can revert to having it ask by copying the /etc/inittab_NOAUTO over /etc/inittab. You could also use the menu option at "Utilities -> Toggle Services -> Autlogin", but if you change it by hand that will get confused. It should fix itself if you run it once. If you change things by hand to enable autologin, the menu entry will still say "enable" but it will actually disable it. Afterwards the menu option will still say "enable" so it will be back to normal then.

Root then enter worked out. 8)

How do you link files or folders? Goes straight to copying when I try like before & doesn't seem to offer the option to link instead.

Could you elaborate on the 'Heavily tweaked Wine setup?" tia

Drag with the middle button / scroll wheel instead. This is how it was in older Puppies. Drag with the left and it just copied, drag with the middle and it gave a menu.

As for wine, sorry I missed the question the first time. Basically, WineTools configures Wine to use a specific combination of native and built-in DLL files, changes a bunch of settings from the defaults (such as setting it to simulate Win98 rather than Win2000), and provides tools to install a bunch of programs (if you have their installers already of course) along with a couple Windows elements than can be downloaded from the web if you have a valid Windows license (which is one reason the addon package is a separate download).

Those Windows elements are a bunch of TrueType fonts, mfc20.dll, dcom98.exe, and IE/Outlook/MediaPlayer. I couldn't get IE/Outlook/MediaPlayer working, so those aren't included in the addon. I did get the TrueType fonts, mfc20.dll, and dcom98 working though, along with the WineTools-configured Wine setup. It also enables the setuid bit on busybox so that su works right (which is a security hazard).

I have an idea to get rid of the setuid bit problem, which I'll try to look at sometime this week (basically just include a separate su app, rather than relying on the busybox one). When I do that I can just re-upload the winetools addon, because it has no effect on the ISO.

Personally, I recommend trying to get the default Wine working first, before resorting to WineTools.

Yes, vista too. Dunno if it's officially supported either way though.

@mrd: If you are planning to try it out, plz post here, as there is not much info out there on how to set it up; or particularly, to be able to boot either or, 301 & pcPupyuOS RC6.

Lin'N'WinNewB

#17 Post by mrd »

Can anyone tell me what I need to do differently to make pcPuppyOS RC6 work with Lin'N'WinNewB?

I followed the instructions on the site as if I were installing puppy301.

http://www.icpug.org.uk/national/linnwin/contents.htm

I created another directory called pcpuppyos301 and copied the files
pup_301.sfs ; zdrv_301.sf to it.

I added the menu item for the boot loader and assumed that I did not want to copy the initrd.gz ; vmlinuz files over since the puppy301 install already copied them over.

I'm assuming you're using xpsp2. In a multiple 3xx setup, the vmlinuz & initrd.gz stuff all go in root & what works for one vers pup, doesn't necessarily work for another.

Add but slightly modify the filenames initrd.gz & vmlinuz in root & menu list for each additional 3xx pup you use.

I do this slight change for each additional 3xx vers:

(original)
initrd.gz
vmlinuz

(1st addition)
initrda.gz ....added an 'a'
vmlinuza

(2nd..)
initrdb.gz
vmlinuzb ....added a 'b'

etc..

ps: I'm assuming 'zdrv_301.sf' above is a typo.(sfs)

Just a heads up. If your're tempted to try more that one 2xx ver, I ran into some prob at that point. Pup save files are all in root in the 2xx setup ..& vista crashed..or something. Haven't had any probs with multiple 3xx versions where pup save files end up in individual folders.

That worked! sort of...

#19 Post by mrd »

Now can you tell me why I can't seem to get my wireless network to work. I have it working fine with the puppy install and used the same exact settings (open and same network name).

I also can't get the pcPuppyOS to boot all the way on my IBM T41 laptop.
I get the splash screen "Booting Puppy Linux" and then it fails with:

Loading the pup_301.sfs main file... failed

reading `/mnt/dev_ro2/pup_301.sfs`: Input/Output error
mount : mounting /dev/loop0 on /pup_ro2 failed

Dumping.....

Everything has to be exact ..to the letter, in the setup. I've spent many hrs going over a setup again & again to sort out one wrong letter or parameter. You can't have any mistakes, misnames or mismatches.

Could be some mixup with the intrd.gz & vmlinuz additions.

I had a few 'Loading the pup_301.sfs main file... failed' (along with other strange stuff) when I had intrd.gz or vmlinuz setup wrong.
