BuddaPup-215

#1 Post by puppyluvr »

..........UPDATE...see my last post down below..........THX... :D

:D Hello :D
Puppyluvr would like to announce the release of BuddaPup. (with immence gratitude to Caneri and Puppylinux.ca for hosting my iso)
BuddaPup is an ongoing attempt to provide a ready made Pup based on the Enlightenment Window Manager.
Currently BuddaPup Beta 2 is based on the very complete Lighthouse Puppy 215, with the addition of Firefox and Opera.
It is a rather large Pup at 307mb but runs on my old dinosaur with 160mb ram + swap
BuddaPup 3 series will be built from scratch atop a 301 base with only chosen packages, and thus the iso should be much smaller (if i dont get carried away lol), although future releases will include more games. (Tuxracer, Supertux, zsnes, ect..)
The url for download is http://puppylinux.ca/members/BuddaPup/
Once again many thanks to Caneri for hosting it :D
Any feedback will be appreciated
Enjoy... :D
Enlightenment is fast. No, really. It's fast. It is known to run on very slow machines (like 100 Mhz CPU, 64 MB of RAM) well. So you really don't need a modern desktop to see some eye-candy and to use a modern graphical environment. Even more – you can control how fast you want it by using it's Performance configuration panel to change the cache settings and more...Enlightenment.org

Hello puppyluvr

Nice job you have done with this derivative.

But i think you forgot to include the zdrv_215.sfs in the ISO,
i dont know if that was intentional or just oversight.

I copied the file from Lighthouse215SeaM_Beta5.iso,
and that enabled me to get online.

zdrv215.sfs

#4 Post by puppyluvr »

:D Hello Catdude :D
First off, thank you for trying my pup :D ..
It is a first attempt, hence being based on an already complete pup.
I wanted to get a version out there based around Enlightenment, to see if it generated any interest, while I am building a newer version from scratch.
As for zdrv.215.sfs, I must confess ignorance. I know it is a necessary file containing drivers for puppy, but since everything works for me (ethernet/wifi ect..) I never new it was missing. Also, as an ignorant noob I also must confess, I dont even know where it is supposed to be!!
I rebooted my desktop fresh from the live cd iso, and everything works fine, But i cant find zdrv215.sfs anywhere.
I dont know why the Remaster wouldnt have included it, but i am attempting to learn more as we speak.
I do know that the iso boots fine for me, and everything works, so i might try D/Loading it from Caneri`s sight and rechecking to make sure it matches the iso and md5sum as I have them.
If necessary i will re/upload a corrected iso.(once i learn more about zdrv215.sfs, like where it is supposed to be, and why no-one has run into this problem before!)
Thank you for bringing this to my attention, I`m certain it will serve to expand my knowledge of Puppy, which can only lead to better Puppys in the future. :D

Hello puppyluvr

Sorry for the delay in responding.

It should be in with the rest of the files, in the directory that the remaster script created called puppylivecdbuild. (If thats the way you did it)
You should look in there before you create the ISO image
puppyluvr wrote: I rebooted my desktop fresh from the live cd iso, and everything works fine, But i cant find zdrv215.sfs anywhere.
I am a little confused by that, do you mean that you can setup your network, even though there is no zdrv215.sfs
puppyluvr wrote: I do know that the iso boots fine for me, and everything works, so i might try D/Loading it from Caneri`s sight and rechecking to make sure it matches the iso and md5sum as I have them.
Yeah it boots fine for me too, but complained about the sound,(no driver i presume)
and i could not load the necessary driver to enable me to setup my internet connection.

I verified the ISO i downloaded, and it tallied with the md5sum given.
md5sum = bc54cb589107d795ae833b10c365be6d BuddaPupbeta2.iso

The contents of the ISO i downloaded are:

-r--r--r-- 1 root root 2048 2008-02-24 02:05 boot.cat
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1336 2008-02-24 01:48 boot.msg
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1316243 2008-02-24 01:48 initrd.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 10648 2008-02-24 01:48 isolinux.bin
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 796 2008-02-24 01:48 isolinux.cfg
-rwx------ 1 root root 239906816 2008-02-24 02:04 pup_215.sfs
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1751229 2008-02-24 01:48 vmlinuz

Once i had copied the zdrv215.sfs file from Lighthouse215SeaM_Beta5.iso,
to the partition where i saved my pup_save.2fs to, and rebooted.
I no longer got the complaint about sound, AND i could load the driver for network connection.

Other than that mate, it seems to be OK

:D Hey CatDude,
Sorry for the slow response..
Well, you are right

The contents of the ISO i downloaded are:

-r--r--r-- 1 root root 2048 2008-02-24 02:05 boot.cat
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1336 2008-02-24 01:48 boot.msg
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1316243 2008-02-24 01:48 initrd.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 10648 2008-02-24 01:48 isolinux.bin
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 796 2008-02-24 01:48 isolinux.cfg
-rwx------ 1 root root 239906816 2008-02-24 02:04 pup_215.sfs
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1751229 2008-02-24 01:48 vmlinuz

These are the same on my live CD..no zdrv215.sfs..
Ran a search..found some text files pointing to zdrv215.sfs..
But not the actual file..
So I know its supposed to be there, but I cant locate it..
The strange part is Everything works..Ethernet..Wi/Fi...
So does that mean its there somewhere...
I`m so confused... LOL
I`ll gladly remaster again to include it..
And re-upload it again...
As soon as I figure out where it`s supposed to go..
Or should I just stick it with Pup215.sfs in the iso...
And let Puppy figure it out??
I`ve had a HD install of Buddapup running for a few months
But I have to remaster from the live CD...(made that mistake b4)
Besides..it is the live iso we are concerned about here...
I need to figure this out before I go any further on beta3..
I guess I can boot my Lighthouse CD and see what/where
it does with zdrv215.sfs...maybe get a clue...LOL..
Still dont get why Everything works for me...
Prit1 has tried BuddaPup..I wonder if he had the same problem??
I`ll have to ask him...

:) You show great enthusiasm for the window manager Enlightenment :)
People should be aware this is not suitable for Buddhists
Try Zen when available

The window manager is not my cup of tea
- the interface made me feel ill . . .
but some will appreciate loads of eye candy. 8)

For real authentic Buddhapupness add a modified YAP to a more serene window manager . . .

Enlightenment

#10 Post by puppyluvr »

:D Hey Lobster...Hows the PH balance treatin` ya :D

I know what you mean about the Enlightenment Window Manager
At first I found it off-putting and intrusive..But given a little time, and
a little "tweaking", it grew on me.
I run it with XFishtank on. No icons, just waves, fish, and a clock..
Quite serene..People ask where I got the "Cool Screensaver"...

Yea, I like the eye candy..(nothing compared to the wNOP&CiaroDock
install on hda4 8) ), but different than any other WM...Maybe I just
like the "As far from M$ as I can get" look, and the fact that it`s
just SOOO different...(like me :D ) And the transparency..

I do find the menu setup redundant,
redundant,
redundant , but you get used to it...

Yea, I guess someone had to get "attached" to Enlightenment...
(But I thought you were the one seeking "Enlightenment" :D )
Having a little trouble deciding which way to go for the 301 alpha
I have plenty of room for Unleashed, and the remaster isnt workin
so well on the 301 for me so far, so "Learning Curve" here I come
I guess  ..Maybe I`ll keep trying the remaster..I`m lazy..

@Puppyluvr: I tried the Buddapup Beta2 on one of my laptops and I am receiving the same errors that Catdude mentioned. Sound error and no networking. The looks are cool though.

Disappointed

#13 Post by davec51 »

I'm a non-technical Puppy enthusiast who has tried maybe a dozen derivatives with my 400mhz, 192mb RAM machine. All work, some wonderfully (my present standard is 3.00).
BuddaPup Beta 2 was a big disappointment. I couldn't configure the ethernet card or the sound card. The desktop was confusing and annoying, with uncalled-for popups all over the place. I'm glad I burned it to a CD-RW, so I could erase with no harm done.

:D Hello :D

@ DaveC51
Yes, the pop-up tool tips are annoying, I forgot to
disable them before I remastered.. Please remember
it is a Beta, and I am a Noob...The Networking and Audio
problems are my fault. I missed a file somehow  , so I`m
remastering it again as we speak...

@Paulh177
Please hold off on the D/L till I correct the aformentioned
problems..Will post when corrected.. :D Oh, and the misspelling
is intentional..The spelling is as distant as the connection to the
Belief...

BuddaPup Beta2b

#16 Post by puppyluvr »

:D Hello from Puppyluvr :D
Well, burned a little midnight oil, and too many cd`s (lol), but the update is uploaded. :D The url for download is http://puppylinux.ca/members/BuddaPup/
Made sure zdv15.sfs was there, and tested the net thoroughly.(I`m using it to upload
the iso, and send this message)
Included a few more goodies (Audacity, Tux racer, ZSNES). (I might have "accidentally"
included a few roms, look in /usr/local/zsnes/tested roms).. Also included the zsnesGL
stuff in /usr/local if you need it.. Before you run tux racer go to left click/puppy/system/system status and config/3D control center and set up DRM ,DRI and OpenGL for your video card.
Of course these goodies come with a price...Yes, it has the "Out house Sink"...but he`s
a big Puppy...307mb...but if you need it all :D
As I stated above..future releases will be smaller and be 301 based..(or possibly 217)
Could not shut off the default tooltip`s , kill them w/ left click/ tooltip settings..
.........Feedback is Appreciated....

buddapup 215

#18 Post by elraven »

it's just me elraven :D
I'm doing this from buddapup . My reaction , baring in mind that i have never seen the elightenment wm is well.. I'm still staring with a grin on my face . I love the way its laid out and organized . As for proformance , I'm running a Dell Dimension 4100 , 1gig processor , and 384 megs ram ,with a swap file . Buddpup and my computer get along real fine . I've never seen my computer move so fast. 8)

As for the response this pup distro as gotten , well let's say I'm more than ticked off . I'm sorry I haven't gotten around before this to try it out. Alas , I'm a man of many worlds, you know how it goes . I think it would do well out on the net. There has been alot of interest of late in the enlightenment WM. So, to its creator , I plead for him not to give up on this. You put alot of time and love into this. There are people just like me ,out there , looking for such a distro like this. If i found it so will they. :D To the others, please at least try this distro out . Not your cup of tea? Ok, but think a minute . When was the last time you found a distro that did everything and had everything you wanted ? This distro has great value and deserves attention.

Well ,I'm gett'n off my soap box now. I'm going to sit back and enjoy Buddapup . He's found a home with me.

Hi

Thanks for taking the time to create this enlightenment pup. First time I've experienced such an animated desktop :) Interesting and very tempting to play with. A 3.01 based edition would be great.

I am sorry that there has not been more interest. Do not get disheartened!

BuddaPup-215

#20 Post by puppyluvr »

:D Hello :D
Firstly, thanks for the interest in BuddaPup-215..I also find it to be very enjoyable to use,
that said, I realize it might not be some folks cup of tea..(Lobster said it made him sea-sick.)
LOL.. I am not discontinuing my work with Enlightenment, Just this thread..Any Questions
concerning this 215 version can be posted on the 217 thread after they remove this one.
Its just to save forum space, to condense both E-Pups to one thread.. I just felt that since
it had virtually no response, that one thread will suffice..
If you like the 215/E-16 version posted here, you might also like the 217/E-17 version on
the other thread..Once they close this thread any questions/requests can be posted and will be responded to on the BuddaPup-217 thread..
I`m not "putting this Puppy down" or anything, because its too usefull. Lighthouse Puppy
is the most thought-out and best equipped Puppy Ive ever found, and E-16 just put the
icing on the cake. When I need to "get r done" this is the Pup I turn to..
Even after I pull it from Puppylinux.ca, it will still be available by request, and any support
needed will be provided thru the 217 thread.
Also, if you are looking for the "Puppy on steroids" kinda thing, might i recommend the
TeenPup series by John Biles..Less eye candy, but a ton of programs, some of which I
wish I could include in my Pups, and very usefull for the younger users.( both my teens
use it).
Anyhow, thanks for the response, and I hope this Pup serves you as well as he has me

@kevin-isca
Thanks...
A 301 version is in the works, meanwhile, have you tried the 217 version??

@elraven
Thank you..
Yes, I find Enlightenment to be as fast as Jwm or IceWm on my machines, and love
the eye candy...Plus, it doesnt require high end graphics to run like Compiz/Beryl..

.....Thanks again...Puppyluvr............... :D
