Nethack

#2 Post by zaivala »

Nice of you to supply a page for a Nethack 3.4.3 pet which does not exist. Got a better one?

@zaivala: the mirror might be down, this post is like 3 years old...
Did you check for it on ppm?

I seem to have a copy of Wolf Pup's Nethack pet, from above. I'm not sure what I can do with it, though - I don't have accounts with any file-sharing services, and as it's larger than 1MB, it's probably too large to attach to a forum post. :|

The .asia and .ca servers have had their content mostly removed, due to circumstances beyond the control of more or less everyone who was storing their files on those servers, unfortunately. :(

@Makoto: attach limit is 1 MB?
I'm pretty sure of have uploaded more than that in an old post...
Anyway, it was on a group of files, not just one.

Wolf Pup's Nethack .pet (above) was only one file. :P

I don't know how large the attachments are allowed to be, really. Clicking on "Allowed Extensions and Sizes" below only gives me this - "Archives -> Maximum Upload Size: 0 Bytes", but it'd probably be better to ask the mods about it, anyway. At any rate, I don't have the file to attach on this system (it's in my Puppy file archive on my main computer, downstairs :) ).

Edit: Well, okay, I've seen a few larger-than-1MB attaches on the forum, so I'll go ahead and include it here...

Thanks! Finally can run Nethack. I clicked on the original link, and get a popup offering me a free prize for filling out a survey, following a 404 error.

I read today/yesterday on Slashdot that over a million websites are now infected with intentional malware. That could be one of them. Thank all the gods I don't run Windoze.

There's some sort of issue with old, larger attachments on the forum, at the moment. I can upload the .pet somewhere else, but I'd rather have a more permanent home (I'm currently using datafilehost, which deletes the files after about 60 days of inactivity).

Edit: I've uploaded it to datafilehost: http://www.datafilehost.com/d/e1e20375

OK, I tried that one. It installed. It does not run. In fact, I have also installed XNethack and qt-Nethack, and those do not run. Sigh.

zaivala: Doesn't the version of Wolf Pup's original .pet that I posted still work?

Makoto: I clicked the link and got a page which simply says "An error occurred".
Eldon: Your copy downloads, and then Puppy asks me to choose a program to open it with. WTF?

I thought you'd downloaded it when I originally posted it as an attachment, due to this:

The copy I uploaded to datafilehost (see above, or click here) should still work... I just re-downloaded it from there, myself.

I just downloaded it again, from the link you just posted. It says it installed and can be found in my Fun directory... but it is not there.

I've noticed a few things I've downloaded are missing dependencies, and I go to Puppy Manager to download them. A number of times I get an error, that the file no longer exists in the repository. Is this perhaps the issue with Nethack?

OK, I went back and FOUND IT in the Fun menu... clicked on it...

It blinked once, and nothing. Like it opened and closed before it could load.

Try opening a terminal/console window for ~/.usr/games. If you're using ROX-Filer, go to that directory and press the "~" key. There should be two files named "nethack" and "nethackgui" in that folder.

In the terminal window, what happens if you type either "nethack" or "nethackgui" (without the quotes, of course) and press Enter? Are any error messages shown?

Using rxvt ...

/usr/games/lib/nethackdir/nethack : error while loading shared libraries : libXaw.so.7: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

You know what I think may be happening is... I haven't yet edited the nhdat options file... maybe have to create the default directories.

Agree? Disagree?

I doubt it. It works out-of-the-box on my system - but then, Wolf Pup did create the package for Puppy 4.3.1, so I couldn't say for sure it'd work on any Puppy later than that. :|

If I remember correctly, that lib is part of XFree - and I don't know whether or not it would be a good idea to simply 'plug it in.' Do you have a "check dependencies of installed packages" option in your Puppy menu (perhaps in the Setup category)? That might possibly detect what you need and install it.

Does the Wolf Pup version actually run using X11 or only in terminal?
I don't know much about this program and it looks very old, but I was having a quick tinker and made a .pet which displays like this:-
