1. for newbies the best way to install software is through dotpup or pupget

but you will gain something from this gyan

packages for many BIG distros are available as .RPMs and .DEBs and ofcourse source which has to be compiled.

building from sources is best but requires resources and know how
.RPMs and .DEBS are binaries ie ready to run (no need to compile)
however hey cannot be used in that form directly in puppy. files from these packages need to be extracted. they will not necessarily work because many libraries are missing / older / newer than required, this has to be dealt with. it also depends for what architecture these packages were made .rpms for mandrake 9.2 should work best in puppy others might work but not always.

so now you know why option 1. is the best

i you are are adventurous i will guide you through a small lesson on how to install a package ( however i advise you not to try it out otherwise ). this is just to give you some hands on experience

download gps.tar.gz (graphical process lister from tucows) it is small 150 kb package without any library requirements and contains just one executable so chances of any thing going wrong are minimal

http://www.tucows.com/preview/58425

home page for this is at http://www.gps.seul.org/ take a look at some screen shots

ok once you have done. make a new directory gps in /root/my-documents/

copy the tar.gz over there

from the utilities menu start guiTAR - click on open -> navigate to the gps folder -> click on the gps.tar.gz. a list of files should now be visible. (hardly any files) now select all files and click on extract. when it asks for the directory to extract to again navigate in to gps folder in my-documents
click on ok. the files will get extracted. close guiTAR -> open the gps folder you should be seeing two folders over there. a usr folder and a share folder ( the share folder contains just documents - we dont need that delete that folder). now right click on the usr folder in gps
navigate to copy in the menu and clikc on it. in the dialog that open
delete all the stuff and replace it with /usr

click on ok . a dialog box opens and asks you the merge the folders click on yes. now you installation is done

open an xterminal and type gps <- enter

the software will now be working

if you make it upto here then maybe you may want to make a dotpup out of it (read more in hot to make a dotpup and use dotpup wizards ) and release it over here (your personal contribution to puppy)
