Kernel 2.6.25 config requests |
|
Barry is currently busy preparing a 2.6.25 kernel for Puppy4 final, so now is a good time to get in with any specific kernel requests. Feel free to add suggestions, but please don't hijack this thread with non-kernel related issues.
HI-FI
Barry, anywhere you see a wifi module option for "promiscuous mode" or "monitor mode" (mainly with Intel wifi modules) please enable these. This will make the modules compatible with various wifi scanning/sniffing utilities.
And in the HostAP section, please enable "Support downloading firmware images with Host AP driver"
otherwise the HostAP firmware (PM010102.HEX and RF010802.HEX) cannot be loaded by the wifi devices which need it - D-Link DWL-520 revE and DWL-650 revP.
TOUCHSCREEN
Please enable the "usbtouchscreen" module -
Device Drivers > USB support > USB Touchscreen Driver
Touchscreen support then requires an additional Xorg input module, "evtouch" ... but that's another story.

D-bus and BLUETOOTH
I'm breaking my own rule here, because this is not a kernel module, but it's related:
I noticed on the Developer Blog that D-bus is planned for Puppy 4.01.
Barry, when compiling D-bus, please use these compile options so that the Bluetooth libraries can properly bind to D-bus -
| Code: | | ./configure --prefix=/usr --localstatedir=/var --sysconfdir=/etc |
It's also essential that the directory /var/run/dbus is present, otherwise D-bus will fail to launch.

But I already have these files in /etc/pcmcia -- they get fetched off the 'zdrv' file when the module first loads.

Yes, but if that option is not enabled, the module is not "smart" enough to know that firmware is needed.
This problem has come up on the forum over the past year or two, and was solved by installing the hostap module with this option enabled.
Of course, it only affects people with a DWL-520revE or DWL-650revP.
Seems crazy, really. I think the firmware-loading facility should ALWAYS be enabled without needing to specify it, because it does no harm to the majority of hostap-supported devices which don't need the firmware.

Hi. Can I request that you enable the option to embed the kernel's .config file in the proc filesystem? Personally I think this would make compiling customised kernels a whole lot easier.
The option can be found under General Setup. Check "Kernel .config support" and "Enable access to .config through /proc/config.gz"

Just to let you guys know something up front -- I don't plan to stay with this 2.6.25 kernel for long. Maybe one or two versions of Puppy, then I intend to move up to one of the 2.6.25.x maintenance releases -- then will stay at that for sometime.
So, if I don't get the kernel config quite right the first time round, there will be another opportunity soon after.

Please include whatever drivers for the AMD 690 and 780 chipsets there are (so I can use the HDMI sound )

Unfortunately not. There isn't anything in lib matching *config* at all (case insensitive) Searching the entire file system for *config* doesn't give us anything useful either.
Thanks for the help though.

Sub_title: Wireless Modules |
|
NB. I've already added this as a comment on Barry's Blog as I hadn't seen this thread then.
Is it possible to get WPA encryption working with ipl3945?
For reasons that elude me ipw3945 has been retired and replaced with ipl3945 which is OK except that the newer module lacked WPA encryption in the early Dingo releases.
This module is required for Intel PRO/3945* wireless chips which are used widely by Dell (and maybe others too) in consumer laptops, so it's important that it is covered out of the box.
Thanks.

This problem looks familiar: associated encryption modules not being loaded.
See more details here -

The unionfs developers stuffed up the version 2.3.2, as it has a "delayed copyup optimization" for recent kernels. In one of my boot scripts there are some echoes to /etc/modprobe.conf, but the delayed copyup causes the file to get corrupted.
They have just released v2.3.3, and the changelog suggests that they might have fixed it, but I'm not certain. I sent them an email, will go an see if they have replied soon.
Anyway, I need to get hold of a fixed unionfs, then repatch and recompile the kernel, then all the 3rd party drivers again. So, I'll see if I can put in some of your suggstions.
1. "promiscuous" extra features of wireless drivers.
2. Auto firmware download for hostap -- though it seems really dumb to have to do that.
regarding /lib/modules/DOTconfig-K2.6.x -- yes, that file is missing, it is supposed to be there. I'll have to check the 'createpuppy' script.
The other place you can find this .config file is at the puptrix.org source repository.

Thanks for the response. I'll revert to Dingo alpha 1, give it a try and let you know how I get on. Don't hold your breath while waiting, though .

Please include whatever drivers for the Via K8m890 and VT8237s chipsets there are (so I can use the mobo for a full HD install. Smile )
Also, I have to do this each time for a 'wipe' or new install to use firewire.
/sbin/modprobe raw1394
/sbin/modprobe dv1394
mknod /dev/raw1394 c 171 0
mknod /dev/video1394 c 172 0
