Abiword 2.6.2

#1 Post by tronkel »

Abiword has received a good press concerning the latest version 2.6.2. They say it is now very near to OpenOffice Writer as regards features - and of course, a lot nippier.

I checked the Ubuntu repo today for a deb to download and undeb, but they have not yet updated Abiword to the latest version.

Tried to compile the source, but ./configure failed with a missing spelling module called Enchant.

I'll keep looking. Would be nice to have in Chihuahua Alpha 5

Tested in Puppy 3.98 and 3.02

Well here you go:

http://www.puppylinux.ca/tpp/jb4x4/abiword

Puppy 3.98 and 3.02
-Abiword 2.6.2 - http://www.slacky.eu/index.php
-libgucharmap - http://packages.slackware.it/
-wv-1.2.4 - http://www.slacky.eu/index.php

Puppy 3.02 only
-Enchant 1.2.0 - http://www.slacky.eu/index.php
-aspell-0.60.5 - http://packages.slackware.it/

I didn't touch the Abiword package, just ran tgz2pet, the libgucharmap was cut down to just include the libs, and with wv, I had to add an extra symlink. The two libs for Puppy 3.02 were just downloaded and ran tgz2pet on them.

Of course, the screenshot.

Can I install this new version in Puppy 3.01? or original Abiword may be damaged?

EDIT:

@Dingo - I tested in Puppy 3.02 and had to add two additional libraries. See above post.

In my install of 3.98, it overwrote my "old" Abiword install. I suppose it could be restored from the official PET repository though. Also, it should work in 3.01 as it is based on Slackware 12.0 (same as the libs, etc. that I used). If you give it a shot, and are having problems, be sure to run "abiword" from the command line to see if any additional libs are needed.

@jb4x4

Did you by any chance get spell-checking to work?
I installed Abiword 2.6.2 OK plus the abispell En_US dictionary from the Abiword website, but no joy on that.

The other dependencies seemed to install OK.

Abiword seems to work OK apart from that spell-check issue.

Thanks for the assistance.

tried Abiword 2.6.2 in TeenPup (based on Puppy 2.14). It works fine, but I have found a strange behaviour

if you press together shift and - the result is _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Thanks for such a great package! Installed the pet files earlier, and they work great. Noticed plugins were not installed, so I've spent the last hour or so figuring out how to get them there... no joy. I got ahold of the boost libraries, as this was needed to compile the abiword 2.6.2 plugins. Figured out how to complie and install them... didn't work. Used a slax version that was precompiled, did work. Compiled abiword plugins... didn't work. At all. Seems there were several errors I don't understand, and when I start abiword and go to plugins, there's nothing there. So, extremely frustrating, No idea where to go now, except to ask this exceptionally nice programming person who seems to know what they're doing could you please create a pet package for us lower downs to use with 2.6.2? I've installed it over the top of 2.4.5, (worked very well by the way) but as there are no plugins I can't use any of my openoffice documents.

Let us know how you go. Cheers.

Pup 4.00beta has Enchant, also in the devx file. It's quite small, so you can compile it and put it into an earlier puppy.

You can specify configure not to need gnucharmap package.

I compiled Abiword 2.6.0 in 4.00alpha7 without much trouble -- reported in my blog.

@sketchman,

Thank you for testing. The big hang up has been the Spell Checker. Could you verify whether it is working or not?

Thanks,
JB

Install of 2.6.2 into Puppy 3.01 went ok, but like tronkel I have no spell check, despite it being enabled in Preferences and the dictionary being located in /root/.abisuite

When I run Abiword from a console I get the following message

Code: Select all

(abiword:24246): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: IA__g_object_get_valist: object class `GtkSettings' has no property named `gtk-cursor-blink-timeout'
Don't know if this is the problem - I suspect not - but ALL the dotpets were installed and appear in PETget listing.

I too would love to be able to get rid of Open Office, since I don't need all of that functionality, but spell checking and printing are key issues for me. All help appreciated.

Cheers

Onya, ttuuxxx! I knew you wouldn't let me down! :P Thanks, mate.

@tronkel - This application is now awesome for refugees. Jack, this just has to go into chiuhuahua along with Gnumeric. These two will satisfy 99% of what a Windows user would want for day-to-day use. Abiword has come of age, IMHO.

Oh. Nope, spell checking doesn't work for me. But the one ttuuxxx provided does.

I also made a missing library for puppy 2.17 packages others can also try the Lib package and please report your findings :)

2.17 Libs needed for Abiword
http://www.puppylinux.ca/ttuuxxx/progra ... i-Libs.pet

Original 2.6.2 Abiword Package

Also if you want some free fonts, go to http://www.fontface.com/fonts/
then download the ttf.zip and extract to the folder /usr/share/fonts/
-then reset Abiword and your good to go :)

Checking the dependencies of Abiword 2.6.2 now shows everything is fine. Before there was a load of them listed. I don't know what it fixed, because Abiword was working before, but no complaints now at least.
